mikecoles··on Campfire is now for sale (Slack alternative from 37signals)
Who will be the first to de-blur the second QR code in the demo video?

Zulip still looks like the best choice for me, mainly because of the threading. Trying out alternatives that integrate with UnifiedPush, none seem spectacular yet.

Australians are not alone in enduring misery induced by governments that have grown too large and controlling.

I was expecting it to be a pet project that took an old telephone that had the extra ABCD keys, run it through an arduino/AVR and into a USB port.

I do as well. If anything looks remotely similar to what I'm providing the free labor for classifying, I make sure to click that in the tiniest of hopes it does mess up their training.
mikecoles··on Experiments on a $50 DIY air purifier you can make in 30s
Unsure about the entire US... For my area they were called "window fans" in previous times. Before air conditioning was prevalent, you'd use these box fans, placed in the window, to circulate air to provide a more comfortable environment.

In years past, the fans were beefier than the current generation. They also used metal fins. Speaking into one made a vaguely similar effect to speaking Like Darth Vader. It was entertaining as a child.

mikecoles··on Ask HN: What is a decent US state to create an LLC in?
These might not be specific to Stripe.

South Dakota for personal use. Delaware for corporate. Nevada for secrecy.

I would make a chart of what features you desire then fill it in with information from the possible states.

mikecoles··on Show HN: Built a self hosted clean status page and batteries
I checked out the top level pages. Looks slick. Congrats!
mikecoles··on Ceph: A Journey to 1 TiB/s
Works great, depending on what you want to do. Running on SBCs or computers with cheap sata cards will greatly reduce the performance. It's been running well for years after I found out the issues regarding SMR drives and the SATA card bottlenecks.

45Drives has a homelab setup if you're looking for a canned solution.

Bitter, former Twitter employees.
mikecoles··on Ask HN: What to do when a loner family member dies and their life was online?
No need to violate the family member's privacy by snooping in their computer. As sorrowful as death can be, announcement of the event isn't a requirement or even advisable.

Shouting under the rock, "Microsoft!"

The entire security certification syllabus is this way.
mikecoles··on Ask HN: Why don't restaurants give you a Covid test before you can enter?
Doubtful that restaurant owners would want to entice the customers that testing would bring. The current customers would go elsewhere.
mikecoles··on The hunter-gather brain is closer to the ADHD brain
The normal classroom was designed for the teacher rather than the student.
mikecoles··on A Geologist Found the Oldest Water on Earth, and Then She Tasted
Extra salty sea water.
mikecoles··on Ask HN: Why Debian and Ubuntu make Apache config so complicated and split up?
Ease of maintenance, as Tomte mentioned. When you have multiple configurations for different sites, it is simpler to isolate the specifics to each site to their own files.

If you're just standing up a single, simple site with Apache, it can be 'easier' to do so with the basic config. Once you get into production environments, the Debian framework is something to be thankful for.

mikecoles··on Cisco to acquire Isovalent
One can be happy for the devs and founders but also lament the loss of a great product.
mikecoles··on Cisco to acquire Isovalent
All certifications are only useful to those coming into the industry. CCIE was once highly regarded, but it's in the same place now, unless some old-time contract has a clause still embedded about a cert being needed.
