michielr··on Pebble Round 2
Haven't watched the video yet, but I don't see the vibrating motor/linear actuator mentioned. I'm assuming this is still included? I'll be switching my Pebble Time 2 order over, these look fantastic.
michielr··on Show HN: Omarchy on CachyOS
It's ignored. This setup wouldn't suffice if my external displays used different scaling though, currently they all work fine at scale 1 for me.

  # external display
  monitor = DP-3, preferred, auto-left, 1
  # internal display
  monitor = eDP-1, preferred, auto-right, 1.333333

The community has written a TUI for this: https://github.com/erans/hyprmon

I don't really need it, but maybe my setup is too simple. I set my laptop monitor to auto-right, external display to auto-left and that's it. Set it and forget it for me.

michielr··on Raspberry Pi RP2350 Now Available for Purchase, Stacked Memory Variant Coming
If you're targeting multiple platforms, you're already in framework territory no? I'd use Zephyr in that case, even more KConfig and CMake!
michielr··on AI, but at What Cost? Breakdown of AI's Carbon Footprint
In the example you compare something with 20 million daily users to the energy usage of 25.000 homes. I feel like comparisons like this mostly work (and feel scary) because we don't really grasp how much bigger 20 million really is. It feels a bit like scaremongering to me (without providing context of AI energy use vs other online activities/services).

Anyhow, another perspective is given here: https://andymasley.substack.com/p/individual-ai-use-is-not-b... This piece aligns more with my view on AI and its energy usage.

michielr··on Why F# evangelism isn't working (2015)
I agree this was a problem, but with the current Minimal API's, there is no boilerplate, looks a lot like Express to me!

  var builder = WebApplication.CreateBuilder(args);
  var app = builder.Build();
  app.MapGet("/", () => "Hello World!");
  app.Run();
michielr··on FOSDEM 2021
Oh come on. It's fully online. You could at least skim the page before commenting.
michielr··on BeagleV – An affordable RISC-V computer designed to run Linux
I just got an email from Seeed Studio

> BeagleV™ is the first affordable RISC-V board designed to run Linux. Based on the RISC-V architecture, BeagleV™ pushes open-source to the next level and gives developers more freedom and power to innovate and design industry-leading solutions with an affordable introductory price at $149.

michielr··on How to Deploy Blazor WebAssembly on GitHub Pages Using GitHub Actions
The example app is about 4.5MB, so still quite bulky but cacheable and reasonable for office applications.
michielr··on AMD Q4:16-core Ryzen 9 3950X, Threadripper Up To 32-Core 3970X
The A300 is wonderful, but there aren't any Zen 2 APU's available. When the next gen APU's with Zen 2 cores come out I'm hoping to build an A300 with a Ryzen 5 APU and 32GB RAM. Seems like a dream dev machine for me.
michielr··on Buy a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B
They get used as a 'kiosk' a lot, even for commercial use. I'm guessing this caters to that need.
michielr··on LineageOS 16.0
The builds are running (and some are failing) right now. https://builds.lineageos.org
michielr··on Lazarus 2.0 RC3 – Delphi-compatible cross-platform IDE
Pretty sure this is being worked on! If you're really interested I can check with an ex-colleague who is involved in Free Pascal.
michielr··on How IBM’s ThinkPad Became a Design Icon (2017)
I'd love to chime in here and specify that this extends to almost every part of a ThinkPad. I had a screen hinge break on my T430, €7 later the replacement hinges were on their way. Replacing them took about 30 minutes and a Philips head screwdriver. Love these machines!
michielr··on Hello, GitHub
Which, one could say, is what open source is all about right? Get people or organisations motivated to improve upon code and share this with the rest of the community so they can reap the rewards as well. No one expects anyone to do stuff only for the greater good. The greater good is the best result of open source, but it isn't the motivation.
michielr··on Hello, GitHub
> There has been nothing but words up to this point.

I get your point, but come on, there have been a lot of 'actions' over the last couple of years. This only detracts from your argument. We've had .NET Core, visual studio code, the improvements on Git, WSL and more.

michielr··on SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy successfully launches
They acknowledged it and uploaded a newer video where this is fixed.
michielr··on Cortana is really bad
Check out keypirinha http://keypirinha.com/ if you like Wox. I prefer it over wox a lot.
michielr··on European Investment Bank announces €25M funding for MariaDB
When running with sql_mode=ORACLE, the server now understands a subset of Oracle's PL/SQL language instead of the traditional MariaDB syntax for stored routines. See MDEV-10142, MDEV-10764 and MariaDB-10.3.0 release notes to know the current status.

So after the update you can use a (subset) of pl/sql.

michielr··on 22 Years of Delphi and It Still Rocks
I've been working with Lazarus on a daily basis for a while now (I work at a mostly Delphi company, but our server code runs on Linux so we write it in Lazarus). Can't say I have the same problems as you do. My host is a ubuntu machine, and I did install the latest version from their website, not from the package manager. This seemed to fix most of my issues with Lazarus.
michielr··on GitLab.com down
They're having some trouble with their latest deployment it seems: https://twitter.com/gitlabstatus/status/829677552314810368

michielr··on Pre-sale of Cyborg implant for sensing North
This is not about the compass per se, it's about adding an extra sense. The article that made me interested in these kind of things was in Wired about 10 years ago: http://www.wired.com/2007/04/esp/ . Well worth the read in my opinion.

michielr··on Encrypted Messaging Apps Face New Scrutiny Over Possible Role in Paris Attacks
The WaPo has an article on Molenbeek. As far as I can tell (I go to Molenbeek a couple of times a year) it's pretty accurate. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/the-belgian-neighborhoo...

michielr··on Ask HN: Why isn't HN using target=“_blank” for links?
It's about giving the user the option. If you use target blank it's impossible to stay in the same tab. Which can be a hassle on mobile or it could get blocked as an ad as well. How hard is CTRL + click or MMB?
