michaelvoz··on Reddit cracks down on abuse as CEO apologizes for trolling the trolls
Yeah, he is a child. I can't imagine a CEO of any company I have ever worked at acting as such. I wonder how employees of reddit feel at the moment?
michaelvoz··on Reddit cracks down on abuse as CEO apologizes for trolling the trolls
If that is true, then they should present evidence of such action and ban it! Applying rules with extremely heavy discrimination is never the way to manage a community.
michaelvoz··on Reddit cracks down on abuse as CEO apologizes for trolling the trolls
I would hardly call this an apology. Also kind-of bold of him to use this as a platform to implement new abusive rules. I don't like the subreddit, but selective enforcement and targeting a single community is very toxic to what little trust I had left in the reddit admins.
michaelvoz··on Twitter’s Chief Operating Officer to Step Down
I still do not understand why twitter needs one. Fire everyone, bring on a skeleton crew of engineers to fix bugs, and maybe 4 product engineers, a couple managers and a couple designers. Boom, instantly ultra profitable.
michaelvoz··on Donald Trump is the president-elect of the U.S.
Been living in the Bay Area for 17 years. Nothing will change.
michaelvoz··on Switching from macOS: Developer Environment
Parallel universes with opposite realities: proven!
michaelvoz··on Museu de la Tècnica
All this story did to me was remind why I don't read twitter. Short messages, interspersed with some random people's comments... I'm sure whatever did happen was downright magical, but the medium destroyed it for me. Can someone pastebin the story?
michaelvoz··on Twitter Has an Old Media Problem, Here’s a Solution
I share a similar opinion. Twitter is not special to me, nor do I believe it holds a special place for anyone outside of those select few who. The purpose of the media is to filter nonsense about politics (and celebrities if that's your cuppa). Twitter somehow seems to be seen as valuable by doing the opposite?
michaelvoz··on U.S. Accuses Tech Firm of Bias Against Asian Software Engineers
I call bullshit. Give me some numbers to back that up. I do 2-3 interviews a week and race is never a consideration. When an engineer is reviewing another engineer's code, I have never ever seen this be an issue.
michaelvoz··on A Survival Guide to a PhD
Sure! I merely presented a few of the more common case paths! For instance, a good friend of mine (who shall remain nameless for anonymities sake) is currently exploring the world, working as a cook in cafes, restaurants, etc, never staying anywhere for long, living out of a backpack. Very romantic, I could never do it myself, but his life is his own.

I dont think man has ever been as truly free as we are today, you can really do anything you set your mind to, not confined to the short, somewhat stuffy list you and I have walked over together.

michaelvoz··on A Survival Guide to a PhD
"I’ll assume that the second option you are considering is joining a medium-large company (which is likely most common). Ask yourself if you find the following properties appealing: ..."

Why is every conversation about PHDs always cast in the light of as-opposed-to-working-for-the-man? I don't see discussions ever bring up the plethora of other life courses one can take. It is though the author sees a very clear binary: PHD or go work on fixing bugs in Gmail (or some other such cog-in-a-machine project).

Where is the discussion of starting a business? Of making your own company? Breaking free of the political shackles of academia and blazing your own path to glory?

I am all for PHDs, and all for people pursuing, and pushing, the boundaries of human knowledge. I would just like to see that discussion live on its own, without comparison, if that is possible.

This is not Reddit. Please keep comments high-effort and on topic.
michaelvoz··on C++ IDEs – a rant
That has only been my experience around swift. Have you used it for C++?
michaelvoz··on C++ IDEs – a rant
Xcode is an absolutely amazing C++ IDE! I wonder why the article did not mention it?
michaelvoz··on Cisco to lay off about 14,000 employees
I admitted to it being anecdotal and coming purely from limited interaction, and not seeing their work. I think that is enough preface to be the salt with which my opinion should be taken.
michaelvoz··on Cisco to lay off about 14,000 employees
Response: Have worked at Verizon and am currently at Uber.
michaelvoz··on Cisco to lay off about 14,000 employees
It absolutely is. We were talking about C++ pointers. 15 minutes of casual discussion at a hot tub a few months back comes to mind - and I could tell they had no idea of:

What a factory was.

What a unique_ptr did.

The dangers of unclear object ownership in a manually memory managed program.

Difference between when to pass by reference and when to pass by pointer.

michaelvoz··on Cisco to lay off about 14,000 employees
I live down the street from Cisco HQ. I share an apartment building with many of their engineers. Perhaps it is anecdotal, and my evidence comes purely from speaking with them (I have never seen their work), but they come across as absolutely terrible as software engineers. They seem like the kind of company destroying people that are the death knell of every software giant. They have no care for the product, good programming, or their company. Their main goal is to just have a job and fly under the radar.

Enough for what?
michaelvoz··on For a Better Economy, Add Commuter Rail?
Source? Seems like drivel.
michaelvoz··on The Election Won’t Be Rigged, But It Could Be Hacked
Skimmed through it. Just because its a PDF, and happens to be someone's 'paper' Does not make it a good source. I don't believe this was peer reviewed...
michaelvoz··on Disrupting Uber
As someone who has lived in the Bay Area 17 years - it just never seemed to materialize.

Disclaimer: I work for Uber.

michaelvoz··on Employee benefits at Basecamp
What a lame corporate, promotional, piece. Seems like an excuse to:

1) Get their name on here despite them no doing anything interesting / News worthy.

2) Attract hires / advertise for free

michaelvoz··on Verizon nears deal to acquire Yahoo
Rather personal no? I guess a question merits answering. I do not - but not because I cannot afford one, I am saving my money for something else :)
michaelvoz··on Verizon nears deal to acquire Yahoo
The purpose of a company is to make money. There is no disagreement there. But the fact that economic climate in the US is deteriorating is bunk, and double bunk that even if it were, it would be related to misunderstandings of the purposes for which startups are founded and run...
michaelvoz··on Edward Snowden's New Research Aims to Keep Smartphones from Betraying Owners
This is still anecdotal. You would need hundreds of people, also, the very fact that you are expecting calls pollutes that experiment already...
michaelvoz··on The H-Bombs in Turkey
I think you are giving people far too much credit, and wrapping it in too much nonsense. The amount of absolute intelligence failure (intentional or otherwise) in the last 15 or so years has been astounding.
michaelvoz··on Google deletes artist’s blog, a decade of his work
He is also a bit of a windbag. He likes to change words because the semantics don't suit his world view. Additionally, his rants are very alienating. The man is a genius in a lot of ways, but he really misses the mark on a lot of things.
michaelvoz··on How (Not) to Write an iOS SDK
There is still a massive, massive amount of enterprise software (see: everything at Apple) that has millions of lines of code in Objective-C. That code will never be rewritten. If you have millions of dollars riding on a framework/app in Objective-C the business needs outweigh any perceived language niceties you get in swift.

This aside - I also disagree with you, Swift is a worse language in a lot of ways, not to mention the extreme compile times and purely unfinished concepts, as well as bugs related to seemingly foundational things like auto-created initializers for structs not getting picked up properly by sourcekit.

michaelvoz··on How (Not) to Write an iOS SDK
You miss his point. It is much easier to consume Objective-C API from Swift then consuming swift API from Objective-C. Even more so if you need the library integrated at a C++ layer of your app.
