mhkool··on Soil Erosion: Why soil is disappearing from farms
Plants need at least 42 minerals and soil in every location of the planet has those minerals, mostly in insoluable (non plant available) form. Aerobic bacteries and funghi have enzymes that extract those minerals and they are mostly kept in their bodies. Amoebas and worms of all sizes eat bacteries and funghi which releases a large amount of minerals in water soluable form in their poop and coincidently the poop is nearby the roots of plants. Some plants are called "nitrogen fixers" since they have clumbs of bacteries on their roots that convert N2 into plant available forms of nitrogen. Plowed soil is fluffy after plowing and compacted after a few weeks since the plowed soil has no structure. What can we learn from these facts?

* do everything possible to keep the life in the soil alive: do not use pesticides, funghicides or herbicides since the toxins are not specific and kill all soil life.

* aerate the soil to have enough oxygen (O2) and nitrate (N2) in the soil. Use a broadfork, but only with compacted soil.

* do not plow since that breaks the networks of funghi and ultimately deteriorates the performance of plants.

mhkool··on Pa$$Word Doesn't Matter
agreed. If one has such common policy, one reduces the efforts that a brute force attack has to take since it can skip the passwords that do not follow the policy.
mhkool··on Pa$$Word Doesn't Matter
the big picture of this excellent article is: to be safe, have a never-used-before 12-character password and use MFA.

The article is not against password managers and if one reads the whole article, the "really nervous" will not be misinterpreted by the average reader.

mhkool··on US launches inquiry into French plan to tax tech giants
> frankly to not look like it's working and making any advance at fixing them.

yes and no. It appears that nothing is done to prevent or fix since mainstream media do not report anything. The US has the largest number of doctors of "functional medicine", which contrary to the rest, seek to find the root causes of disease, and many times find them and restore health with supplements, probiotics, life style changes and toxin avoidance. For the hardliners that deny functional medicine, I recommend to read about the full story of Dr Terry Wahls. TL;DR a professor with the best treatment for MS by many top doctors deteriorated to being in a wheelchair and she cured herself by reading the scientific literature, understanding the whole body and doing a different treatment. She now treats MS patients who who has heard of her? So fixes exist but are unknown.

yesterday the site transferwise.com on cloudflare also was down and when it came back had intermittent issues.
mhkool··on Baoshang collapse threatens China's economy, may trigger central bank response
Banks fail sometimes and there is no regulation or risk management system that can prevent it. To increase protection for clients and economy one could by law introduce 'bank types' where, for example the type 'low risk' is only allowed to do transactions with low risk with of course lots of options to define what 'low risk' is.

mhkool··on Google scrubbed natural health sites from search results; whistleblower explains
must be a coincidence: the video hosted by Vimeo with the interview with the insider stutters and stops all together at 8:23 in Chrome but has no issues in Firefox.
mhkool··on How can I get healthy and clear skin?
Acne is a symptom and treating the symptom may have some effect... but of course it is a far better idea to find the cause and treat the cause. There are very few doctors who do this, but if you want to find the cause(s) then you need to find a doctor of functional medicine. I suggest that you start your search here: https://drhyman.com and https://draxe.com.
mhkool··on U.S.-China Trade War Portends Painful Times for U.S. Semiconductor Industry
Trump had a point, for example, to put tariffs on steel to protect the US steel industry.

Tariffs are common. Europe, for example, has huge tariffs on Brazilian meat (was 230% don't know how much today) and 42% percent on Chinese bicycles. So Trump simply had to put tariffs where tariffs are reasonable (does his dictionary contain the word 'reasonable' ?) and never use the words 'trade war'.

mhkool··on Preformance impact of Intel Spectre-class builtin mitigations on CPU preformance
I was expecting that hardware mitigation would give better performance but Intel did a disappointing job.
mhkool··on Systemd Clocks in at More Than 1.2M Lines
good software has 1 bug per ~1000 lines. 1200 bugs for such a critical piece of software is too much.
mhkool··on Ask HN: What jobs can a software engineer take to tackle climate change?
The easiest way to reduce CO2 is to plant a forest, so look for companies that do this.

mhkool··on The Huawei Disaster Reveals Google’s Iron Grip on Android
Do not forget that Huawei is ahead with 5G. So with plenty of resources Huawei has shown to be the leader in one area and there is no reason to assume it cannot do that in other areas.

mhkool··on Huawei's vulnerability to US microchip ban
That is right. Russia can today not supply China with sufficient soy. But Russia has enough soil to change that and since the political will from China and Russia exists, this most likely will happen.
mhkool··on Huawei is in deep, deep trouble, and we still don’t have a clear picture of why
What most do not realize is that it is not about Huawei. The Huawei ban is nothing but an attempt of Trump to force China into a deal that it does not want. We can only speculate what will happen but I am pessimistic about the consequences for all of us.

The Huawei ban is making the whole world to realize that they depend too much on the US and all who realize this will work (jointly?) to reduce or eliminate this dependency which ultimately means that the US will sell less products.

Russia and China have been increasing their gold reserves to be able to get rid of the US dollar and there will be a new way of trading. Since economies of India and China are growing, the economy of the USA reduces (relatively). Europe, China, Russia, India, Iran, Irak and other countries do not agree with US policies, so the risk that US policies will fail some day should not be underestimated.

mhkool··on Google’s Android ban for Huawei proves we need strong alternatives
I was enthousiastic about Purism and was following their progress on making a new phone, the Librem 5. My interest in Purism has dropped to zero since it is an American company that can be forced to do whatever a president wants it to do. Yes, we need an alternative and it has to be one that is out of reach of the president of the USA to make sure that our investments keep their value.
mhkool··on Huawei's vulnerability to US microchip ban
Huawei will suffer a little bit in the short term and most likely come back stronger since they have the home market and resources to develop a new and better phone with non-USA parts. This trade&tech war is just beginning and is pushed by the USA to do everything without parts/commodities from the USA. So that is exactly what China will do. It will take some time, but China has plenty of resources and - will buy soy from Russia and stop buying it from the USA - stop buying tech from the USA and make it themselves. Not well thought through by Trump and his advisors.
mhkool··on Google suspends some business with Huawei
What most people forget is that in a war the other party shoots back. It may take some time but it will happen and sometimes when you do not expect it. I think that Trump's move with banning Huawei is bad for the US in the mid and long run.
mhkool··on Google suspends some business with Huawei
well, until today Google had a large stable market share with Android. Trump initiated the end of that. Android will have a lower share and the market is not stable any more. And everybody outside the US will think twice before buying any product where the US government can destroy its service.
mhkool··on The Peculiar Blindness of Experts
Predicting anything is a gamble. One simply does not know what will happen but one makes assumptions. Let'ś take weather forecasting as an example. It is difficult to do it right for 5 days and often goes wrong for 10 days. But when you ask a group of scientist a simple question, like "Do you think that humans contribute to the rise of CO2 ?" and 97% say "yeah", then you can make a new assumption: CO2 will probably rise fast and we can make a new climate model that goes beyond 10-day forecasts and we assume that we can accurately forecast what happens in 80 years. Most, however, do not realise that they assume a lot.
mhkool··on Backblaze Hard Drive Stats Q1 2019
my prediction: all four items in the list of predictions will happen.
mhkool··on Inflammation might be the root of preventable disease
The term "root cause" was not invented for nothing. One should always try to find the root cause since if you do not find it you are fighting a symptom instead of a cause. There is a huge amount of research about what causes inflammation so it is correct to say that inflammation is a symptom not a cause.
mhkool··on The Case for Transmissible Alzheimer's Grows
Dr Dale Bredesen has a treatment protocol that improves the conditions of all patients from moderately (late Alzheimer) to significantly (early Alzheimer). His treatment protocol recognizes 3 different types/causes of Alzheimer with an additional 2 subtypes. In December 2018 Dr Bredesen published an article where he shows the results of treatment of 100 patients in various health centers: https://www.omicsonline.org/open-access/reversal-of-cognitiv... It is a shame that Scientific American does not know of Dr Bredesen since he is publishing about his treatment a long time. In 2014 he published an article where he reversed Alzheimer in 9 out of 10 patients (which are still well in December 2018!).

cancelling the bonus is evil. Tesla, shame on you !!! I am not gonna buy your cars.
mhkool··on Ask HN: What can you do against climate change as a software engineer?
Nothing. Seriously, look at the graph of the temperature of the last 10,000 years and you will see that independant of humans, temperature was a couple of times significantly higher than today. Temperature will rise no matter what you do.
