meta_x_ai··on Mullenweg Shuts Down WordPress Sustainability Team, Igniting Backlash
or may be typical leaders have a better vision of what "sustainability" means.

"Hire great engineers that have sustainability in their bones"

Actual implementation by the grifters : Hire other grifters with Sustainability in their resume, whose only job is to act as gatekeepers with psuedo-science garbage and make this team as big as the Engineering Team.

It's perfectly fine for the leader to look at the implementation and say "what's this fucking bullshit and cut everything".

These concepts are of course completely alien to leader/rich-hating HN

The money was spent in Democratic-heavy zipcodes, not rural areas

Why wasn't such cartoon made when Mark Zuckerberg donated $400 million to essentially increase Get-out-to-vote in essentially largely democratic areas.

Delusional to think the WP and NYT journalists are coming at this at a highly non-partisan way.

The entire mainstream media is Anti-Trump, Anti-GOP.

I remember how MSM treated Javier Millei as the next hitler

A software developer's time is much more precious than wasting time on sub-optimal models.

Open Weights models has it's place (in training custom agents and custom services), but if you are knowledge worker, using a model even 5% less than SOTA is extremely dumb

As a South Indian My name (in public school records) till I was age 21, was <name>. <initial>

I was forced to pick the last name for passport purposes and typically i either have the option of attaching my dad's name or my dad's town name.

My wife, didn't even do that and when she migrated to US, she was <name> LNU (short for Last Name Unknown). While applying for greencard we decided it was too much of a hassle for her and she attached her father's name

OpenAI has completely pivoted to a Product company (vs a Model / API company)

The minute they switch to API is the time their userbase realizes that OpenAI neither has the best model nor the most cost-effective one nor the fastest one.

So, their business strategy is subscription and bundle a bunch of products and market it to the mass.

They have a brand "chatGPT" recognition and they'll milk that.

None of those matters (except multimodal). If you are running a business, the only thing that matters is

a) How does it perform on my set of evals

b) What is the cost/latency of serving it to my consumers.

It shouldn't matter to me how many parameters, corpus it is trained on, whether it's LLM or Transformer or something else

meta_x_ai··on MTA's A.I. bus cameras issue mistaken parking violations
If you prevent government from launching technologies for every software bug / mistake, you will get a bloated government which will do everything manually increasing it's cost to taxpayers and decrease in quality of services.

The key is still to launch fast and iterate over bugs especially in the realm of traffic / parking violations which at the most causes annoyances to people ( I mean the same people are willing to sit in front of Holland Tunnel for an hour )

You have no idea the margins at which Elon Musk operates.

If you read his biography he is obsessive about cost cutting like no else in the history of mankind. There are plenty of examples where Musk brings down the cost of a component by 90%.

No other leader takes risks like Musk and hence he will always push frontiers.

His companies never get lazy or bloated even if it reaches $10T market cap.

Musk methods can't be replicated because it is the anti-thesis of every management practice.

meta_x_ai··on Amazon Makes It Harder for Disabled Employees to Work from Home
That's perfectly fine. Considering OpenAI, Google, Amazon despite their strong RTO policies are attracting the top talent, they don't have worry about pleasing midwits not applying to their companies.

Self-attrition by entitled, highly paid mid-performers are the greatest gift to corporations in this economy, where there is fresh batch of engineers wanting to take their place

meta_x_ai··on Amazon Makes It Harder for Disabled Employees to Work from Home
Do you have data to prove that? If not, then leaders have every right to go with their gut instincts.

Give me an example of a company that is immensely successful (massive growth) like say OpenAI that are fully remote

meta_x_ai··on Amazon Makes It Harder for Disabled Employees to Work from Home
Unless you can spin an alternate universe, some complex-dynamic things like corporate culture can't be data driven.

A classic example is this https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2018/12/10/the-friendship...

How will you design an experiment that would create a world where Jeff Dean WFH just solved the problem and 'completed his Task' and Google was just a search engine with a $10B market cap due to scaling issues or a huge operations cost.

Today Google is $2.5T marketcap and you can bet a significant portion of it came from the work culture created in the office.

No amount of Social Science can ever capture the tail events that has massive upside like tech companies.

Even if 180,000 employees are unhappy, but the 20 who are happy create the next Amazon revolution can change the trajectory of Amazon that can't be measurable

Edit : Butthurt HNers downvoting a perfectly logical argument. Then they expect leaders to listen to them

meta_x_ai··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Except Trump's stimulus was needed because of the lockdown (and people were losing jobs).

Biden stimulus was the one that

a) Ignited demand > Supply

b) provided no incentives for people to go back to work (Biden also had extended mortgage, rent, loan payment programs) which exacerbated inflation
