meowster··on US Postal Service delays threaten to disrupt election voting, officials say
> The pay has not scaled and you're working long hours, Monday through Saturday. Not exactly a dream job.

This describes my federal job. I wonder how many other federal jobs are like this. My coworkers used to put up with the stress/schedule/etc, but now the pay does not outweigh the cons. I foresee the industry I'm working in, becoming a shitshow; I wonder what other industries will follow suit.

meowster··on Are greedy companies to blame for grocery inflation? We looked at the data
They just introduced cans without the pricing printed on it to allow for stores to mark it up, as well as a "premium" brand/line that costs more.

If the amount is/was under the small claims court level, that would be a vastly cheaper and easier route to take. Rules vary by state, but I believe generally you cannot select an arbitrary amount lower than the monetary threshold just to use small claims court, but you might be able to argue Google has 50% or some other culpability if that will get the amount under the threshold. IANAL.

meowster··on YouTube to restrict teenagers' exposure to videos about weight and fitness
Did they ever remove that 1M+ subscriber chanel that pretends to be SpaceX and show launches only to pivot to a deepfake of Elon promoting a cryptoscam?

YouTube allowing that scam channel to get so large is dumbfounding.

Of the U.S. services, the U.S. Merchant Marine had the highest casualty rate in WWII of 4%, followed by the U.S. Marines at 2%.

meowster··on One of the worlds forgotten ancient wonders hidden in plain site in Armenia [video]
Actual video title:

Hartashen Megalithic Avenue: Ancient Mystery of the Armenian Highlands

I don't know about "ancient wonder"; albeit technically true, seems like an editorial stretch.

meowster··on Small asteroid to hit Earth's atmosphere today
I wonder, could an asteroid be traveling at a relative-to-Earth speed of very slowly, so that the impact most like just "setting down" on Earth rather than slamming into Earth?
meowster··on Memos: stick private notes on your email
I just create an all-day calendar event and manually change the date each year.
meowster··on Memos: stick private notes on your email
In regards to some of the other replies:

While birthdays are technically anniversaries; I've never met anyone who calls a birthday, an anniversary.

Birthdays ≠ Anniversaries. Just like Squares ≠ Rectangles. (All birthdays are anniversaries, but not all anniversaries are birthdays; just like all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares.)

I'd rather use the birthday field for birthdays. So when I say (and I imagine 99.999% of other Americans say) "anniversary" we mean everything other than birthdays (most commonly: wedding anniversaries).

meowster··on Memos: stick private notes on your email
I was momentarily confused as well. Not a feature I ever thought about before, and will probably never use.

I'd rather have them implement something simplier like having an anniversary field for contacts and that show up in my calendar so I know when to mail anniversary cards.

meowster··on Crypto 'pig butchering' scam wrecks bank, sends ex-CEO to prison for 24 years
A new scam that I'm seeing is random text messages where the other person thinks you're a veterinarian, or play tennis (and they're oddly worded):

> Hello Manny. My customized tennis racket has arrived. I want to play a tennis match with you. I have a hunch that you are no longer my opponent. When do you have time?

I imagine they want to get you into a conversation and pitch a crypto scam.

meowster··on 17,000 AT&T workers across the Southeast strike over contract negotiations
Another user made a good analogy in a recent thread, and they said something to the effect of: it's like self driving cars, the computers can do 99% of it when conditions are perfect, but it's the 1% that can't be programmed that has life and death impact.

Or like a coworker said: a monkey can do our job 99% of the time, it's the other 1% where we earn our pay.

If I had a M-F/9-5, I wouldn't have the same issue about the pay, however there are 15,000 controllers across the U.S., and none of them have a M-F/9-5. If the U.S. airspce was restricted to M-F/9-5, then our economy would grind to a halt, billions if not trillions would be lost in productivity, our military would be tied with its hands behind its back, etc.

---

I used to recommend ATC as a career for people, not anymore. I've heard of other controllers telling people that they convinced to become ATC that they're now sorry that they did. When talent leaves, and talent recomends to other talent to choose a different career, there's going to be problems down the road. The adoption of technological advancement over the past several decades in U.S. ATC has been abysmally-slow, I'm afraid it won't make up for the brain drain.

Pay a little more money now while there are still good controllers that can train future good controllers, or pay a lot more in other ways later when the talent is gone and can't come back.

Opinions are my own and not necessarily that of the Federal Aviation Administration.

meowster··on 17,000 AT&T workers across the Southeast strike over contract negotiations
Which is why our (ATC) pay is becoming not worth the job which is why good controllers are quiting or retiring early, and there are lower quality applicants who wash out of the academy, their facility, or skate by until they nearly kill hundreds of people (see the recent Austin airport incident where a plane nearly landed on a Southwest plane, or other incidents that don't make the news that I can't mention without doxing myself), all while pilots are getting 40% raises. I hope your TCAS is working.

Rasie our f***ing pay.

Opinions are my own and do not necessarily reflect the Federal Aviation Administration.

(I'm close to retirement eligibility, so instead of working until I'm 56 - the mandatory returement age, I'm going to retire sooner. Because there has been a struggle to hire an adequate number of controllers over the past decade or so, no one is really going to replace my vacancy which causes shortstaffing and everyone else to be that much more overworked, but when the FAA does fill that spot, it will be by someone who is not as good because people who would be better will be attracted by better salaries and work-life balance in other jobs.)

meowster··on FlightAware Leaks Customer Data (Name, Email Addresses and Passwords)
ATC here. It's not always because someone is grumpy or for formal discipline.

I only gave a Brasher Warning one time, only because my trainer told me to. I suppose it depends on the culture/facility, but where I learned it, they had more of the attitude that it was to have an informal conversation to find out what happened and what the pilot and/or controller can do differently next time.

After my supervisor talked with the pilot and listened to the tapes, we discovered that my control instruction was ambiguous and that I should be more clear next time (and the pilot should follow the minimum altitudes on the approach plate).

When I obtained utilities for my house, none of them required my SSN. The water company asked, but I declined, so they asked for a fax of my DL (which I could have probably photoshopped, but didn't).

Just because people ask for something, doesn't mean you have to give it to them. I leave fields blank all the time on different (paper) forms (including when they ask for SSN), virtually no one hassles me.
