Have supermarkets reached peak self-scan?

The main reason for the growth of self scan was loss control (theft reduction). Most theft from stores is by staff not customers. Removing the human from the till reduced the theft. This worked for several years, until customers worked out how easy it was to steal from self service checkouts. Now self checkouts don’t have the loss reduction benefit they are being phased out.

In the U.K. I find the Aldi scanners to be great, they’re fast and accurate, probably in part to the enlarged barcodes.

Tesco is the worst, multiple second delay between scanning each item while it recognises the weight, constant blocks, good riddance.

I demand a rebate due to supplied work.
