mendelmaleh··on Tiny $70 Xteink X3 e-reader
Same for mine bought a week ago.
mendelmaleh··on KOReader
I have a kobo ebook with [plato](https://github.com/baskerville/plato), it includes koreader but I found the built in mupdf much more intuitive and elegant.
mendelmaleh··on Donate to GrapheneOS
I used to use OpenTracks to record, then upload to Strava API with an app called HTTP Shortcuts. But now Strava wants me to pay to use their API lol.
mendelmaleh··on Show HN: 18 Words
> 2. For those who like the timed version would you prefer to continue when you miss a word and then get a final score out of 18?

Absolutely, I had to reopen it a bunch of times in incognito to make it to the end xD

Very fun!

mendelmaleh··on GrapheneOS has been ported to Android 17
I'd like to do this, but epoxy it to a dress watch
mendelmaleh··on GrapheneOS has been ported to Android 17
They don't support amex or capital one, the two I use the most...
mendelmaleh··on Motorola announces a partnership with GrapheneOS
One thing that bothers me is the seeming lack of transparency about who is running GrapheneOS. Daniel Micay supposedly stepped down, so who is calling the shots now? Who runs the CI? Who owns the update servers and signing keys? Who am I trusting?
mendelmaleh··on Heathrow scraps liquid container limit
Because we have quart-sized ziplock bags here, liter bags not so much.
mendelmaleh··on Tell HN: Bending Spoons laid off almost everybody at Vimeo yesterday
I think by routes he means the trails database, not user activity
mendelmaleh··on Asahi Linux with Sway on the MacBook Air M2 (2024)
I had a pretty similar setup with sway too, idle power usage was pretty bad, but no external display became a deal breaker at some point.
mendelmaleh··on Open-source Zig book
> The Zigbook intentionally contains no AI-generated content—it is hand-written, carefully curated, and continuously updated to reflect the latest language features and best practices.

I think it's time to have a badge for non LLM content, and avoid the rest.

mendelmaleh··on Ratatui – App Showcase
The main reason for me is simple keyboard navigation. I don't want to click through links and menus, I don't want to use the mouse at all. I think that's also why tiling window managers are popular again.
mendelmaleh··on $2 WeAct Display FS adds a 0.96-inch USB information display to your computer
I recently drove a Mazda with a knob in the center console that controlled the Android Auto display. It was surprisingly usable!
mendelmaleh··on US Wholesale Inflation Rises by Most in 3 Years
In 2022 I scraped the current prices for things I bought on amazon the year before, and got a 7% increase.

Unfortunately amazon stopped providing order reports recently...

``` $ inflation -y 2021 -f items.csv 86 successful items, 30 failed items 2256.76 total 2021 2427.62 total now +170.86 (+7%) difference ```
mendelmaleh··on Open Source Maintenance Fee
The existing software stays absolutely FOSS. The development of it is absolutely not free.
mendelmaleh··on The Fairphone (Gen. 6)
here's a pretty good thread about compatibility:
https://grapheneos.social/@GrapheneOS/114721666000552094
mendelmaleh··on Mox – modern, secure, all-in-one email server
Set it up in mid 2023, still running good! Getting it going was fun, staying on top and maintaining it isn't really...
mendelmaleh··on Developer wrote 25k lines of Neovim plugin code using phone and touchscreen
25x80 is ok. i'm getting 37x62 in portrait, 6x128 in landscape, both with the keyboard open. typing symbols is the main handicap imo, overall unusable.
mendelmaleh··on Furilabs Linux Phone
review for the android version: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Gigaset-GX6-smartphone-review-...
seems pretty favorable, keep in mind that it's already two years old. it's also a brick at 280g, almost double a pixel 5, otherwise pretty similar
mendelmaleh··on Framework Laptop 13 Deep Dive – Creating a custom high-resolution display
Why don't they offer a rounded corner bezel to match?
In general, I'm disappointed by the lack of real customization. There are a few color/aesthetic options, but would love to see things like trackpoints, three button trackpads, bezels without cameras, and other things that would actually change usage.
mendelmaleh··on Hertz Charging a Tesla Renter for Gas Was Not an Isolated Incident
If they did a chargeback, Hertz might dispute it, send you collection letters and terminate your account.
mendelmaleh··on I told the flight attendant "the WiFi isn't working"
Connecting to wifi and enableing the hotspot at the same time works on my phone (pixel 5), it probably just uses different bands. It's pretty useful to avoid typing passwords twice.
mendelmaleh··on I want an iPhone Mini-sized Android phone
I'm still using a Pixel 5 with Android 11, so far so good. I used to be a hardcore Android fan, but I don't really like where it's going, at this point I'm almost rooting for a USB-C iPhone SE.
(edit) Regarding the specifications:
  - don't care for 5G, 4G has better range and better power efficiency
  - don't care for a second rear camera, invest more into the first
  - 4h SOT seems like a pretty low target, the Pixel 5 can probably do 8h easily
mendelmaleh··on Tidbyt hardware display device: a review
Please do!
mendelmaleh··on Twitter CMO: Elon Musk has “questionable ethics”, expects mass exodus
Quote:
> How does the board and Mr. [Elon] Musk plan on dealing with a mass exodus considering the acquisition is by a person with questionable ethics?
mendelmaleh··on Dual 75“ 4K TV Floor Computing
Nice! what scaling do you run them at? I like avoiding fractional scaling, I have two 24" and run them at 2x.
The next step would be 27" 5K for a similar DPI, someday : )
mendelmaleh··on Start Self Hosting
> I will be moving my KVM/LXD setup to Proxmox eventually
How come? I'm running proxmox currently but I'm considering just using a regular distro with lxd because I'm almost only using lxc containers...
mendelmaleh··on Show HN: I made a privacy-first minimalist Backblaze
> I actually really like Backblaze (even use B2 for this offering behind the scenes)
B2 is $5/tb, you are charging $9 for 5tb? How does that work? Do the old versions count towards the quota?
