They probably lowered the max bitrate for 360p videos.
mdonahoe··on Snap CEO: We’re happy to pay Apple 30% – without Apple we wouldn’t exist
If Apple started demanding 30% of Snap’s ad revenue, I’m sure Evan would change his tune.

Numberphile has a bunch of fun videos starring Neil Sloane, the creator of the OEIS. He gets really excited about graphs

mdonahoe··on The Double Pendulum Fractal
Very cool. I was imagining a recursive pendulum where the second link was another recursive pendulum... but this was cooler

Descript is an excellent product. Congrats!

The fatality rate stats are interesting. Has anyone down an independent analysis?

If all the risky tesla owners use Autopilot, then you’d expect the remaining human piloted miles would be safer.

Tesla accidents are already better than the average, presumably more to do with the price of the car rather than the tech... but I’m curious to see a real analysis rather than my speculation.

mdonahoe··on Always Bet on Text (2014)
I’m so glad this post is still around. I cite it a lot when discussing creative tools with people who think that visual is the only way to go.

Obviously the best computer tools offer both visual and textual ways of working. But if you have to pick one, bet on text.

I was about to add a caveat about pure visual tasks, like image composition, but advances like DALL-E are starting to put those tasks into question as well. If I were making a photo editor today, I would bet on text.

The original Deus Ex is excellent, so he’s right

thanks for the link!

I'm wondering if I'm the only one who found that book too weird to read... and I'm hoping there is more approachable material available

They are simplifying the presentation for educating a wider audience of non-ECEs.

This is not a new phenomenon in human communication.

But we’re all just blobs of meat, that’s true. Maybe one day Apple will better tailor their marketing to sentient Bitcoin algorithms.

mdonahoe··on Unslack: Transform the way your business communicates (again)

mdonahoe··on Reddit’s About page doesn't include Aaron Swartz as a founder
HN isn’t exactly a bastion of free speech either
mdonahoe··on What is the best dumb TV?
I got a tv with built-in Roku, and its actually pretty nice. I can change volume, select hdmi inputs and power on/off the tv with the Roku remote (and app) now.
mdonahoe··on “Really successful people say no to almost everything”
I doubt the author even got a direct line with Buffett.

Really really successful people have handlers that say no to everything.

mdonahoe··on Dawn of the Heliocene
I like this article better, which argues that we are potentially entering a new eon, rather than just a new epoch

https://www.npr.org/sections/13.7/2016/12/18/506036420/a-pla...

This quote was pretty good: “Never before has a geological force become aware of its own influence.”

mdonahoe··on A creature that eats its own brain
Do you recommend that book?
mdonahoe··on Mathematicians should stop naming things after each other
Maybe I misinterpreted what the author is trying to say by using Conway as an example, but I don’t think Conway discovered the Monster group. He credits Fischer and Griess.

Conway just referred to it as a monster while corresponding with Fischer and the name stuck.

mdonahoe··on Apple Terminates Epic Games' Developer Account
Yeah but I don’t like it
mdonahoe··on 2,000-year-old redwoods survive wildfire at California's oldest state park
I was thinking redwoods are like rich people. Their scale gives them unfair advantages compared to other plants.

Also metaphors make weak arguments.

mdonahoe··on Why People Become Internet Trolls
He’s trolling you
mdonahoe··on Why People Become Internet Trolls
I prefer the urbandictionary definition:

“Trolling on-line forums as described above is actually analogous to the fishing technique of “trolling”, where colorful baits and lures are pulled behind a slow moving boat.”

mdonahoe··on Why People Become Internet Trolls
He’s a benevolent troll, like 3YearLetterman.
mdonahoe··on Staking Claims with Scheduled Tweets
I’ll post in 25 years in the future once I brute force this hash.
