mbillie1··on The Culture Wars Have Come to Silicon Valley
> But by American standards, her platform was well left of the average politician.

Again, only if you entirely discount her economic positions, which are the core positions of any "left" figure.

You're free to paint with however wide a brush you wish, and your other comments in this thread leave little doubt that you'll retain your opinion regardless of how this exchange turns out. But simply because the Democratic party is the "more PC" corporate capitalist party, and the Republican party is the "less PC", does not mean that either of them represents anything remotely resembling economic left interests.

mbillie1··on The Culture Wars Have Come to Silicon Valley
I would dispute that Hillary is a left candidate whatsoever - she is a centrist, hawkish free-market neoliberal.
mbillie1··on The Culture Wars Have Come to Silicon Valley
> The American sense.

With no economic components I'm genuinely curious what you consider the "American sense" of the left, in the sense of actual policy. Pro-choice, I guess?

mbillie1··on The Culture Wars Have Come to Silicon Valley
Except that the google engineer this article refers to was not punished or fired for supporting Trump; he was fired for circulating a memo which claimed there were immutable biological reasons why approximately 50% of the workforce was unfit to work in his industry.
mbillie1··on The Culture Wars Have Come to Silicon Valley
"I have found a single sample from which I will generalize broadly about the entire country."
mbillie1··on The Culture Wars Have Come to Silicon Valley
In what sense could that possibly be "left" then?
mbillie1··on The Culture Wars Have Come to Silicon Valley
"Silicon Valley’s politics have long skewed left, with a free-markets philosophy and a dash of libertarianism."

This is not in any modern sense "left" (please don't bother pedantically bringing up "classical liberalism").

That's not really how food distribution works, in the US or most other first world countries, so no.

> What I really don't get is why isn't the free market working?

That is an excellent question that you could ask about many of our modern social dilemmas. The beginning to an answer might be found in Piketty's Capital in the Twenty-First Century

mbillie1··on New York City bans employers from asking potential workers about past salary
Please document some of this case law!
mbillie1··on New York City bans employers from asking potential workers about past salary
No, I would not. Freedom of speech pertains to legislation from congress preventing political speech. Most companies already prohibit employees from discussing salaries, under penalty of termination. Any business can ask you to leave, as a patron, for using profane speech in their establishment, or any number of other reasons. Please stop participating in this absurd and obnoxious fallacy wherein you decry anything you dislike as violating your "free speech"
mbillie1··on New York City bans employers from asking potential workers about past salary
Way to see the bigger picture for employee rights here.
mbillie1··on New York City bans employers from asking potential workers about past salary
How is this bad for "freedom of speech"? Please elaborate on this ludicrous claim.

The amount of abuse and low-quality-of-life we'll put up with in exchange for the fantasy of becoming rich is shocking. It's like buying scratch off lottery tickets for "intelligent professionals."

Yes. I recall learning that the clinical trials proving the effectiveness of Effexor, among other things, being shown to have been faked/not actually completed, which lead to a recall of the drug.

mbillie1··on Soylent halts sales of its powder as customers keep getting sick
Particularly when you are inundated in valley slave culture, being busy all the time is a sign of your importance - you're busy disrupting the market getting ready to IPO, and if you have 10 spare minutes a day in which to regain some semblance of health or sanity, clearly you aren't a 10x developer. It's absolute hogwash and sadly a good number of brilliant young engineers are going to burn out, suffer health consequences, quit the field, etc. over it.

But having employees willing to sacrifice their actual wellbeing for the pipe-dream of getting "rich" is quite beneficial if you're say, a VC, so of course they foster this culture. "Look at how busy you are, you must be doing such important work!"

mbillie1··on Soylent halts sales of its powder as customers keep getting sick
> Sometimes I'll go 3-4 days doing nothing but work and sleep

In all seriousness, this is tremendously unhealthy. Get up and go for a walk, a light jog, something. The health consequences of even just being sedentary for that long are terrible (to say nothing of the psychological consequences of deceiving yourself into thinking that work is the only thing of value in life).

mbillie1··on Soylent halts sales of its powder as customers keep getting sick

Absolutely - it's less about left/right and more about "I can discredit reasonable sources as biased by recalibrating what bias means based on these extreme outliers"
mbillie1··on Facebook Has Repeatedly Trended Fake News Since Firing Its Human Editors
I am not accusing you personally of this, but the tactic of continually accusing more and more mainstream publications of being left-leaning in order to make room for e.g. Breitbart / InfoWars is becoming increasingly common, and it's a wholly fallacious argument. All you need to do is push the boundary of the extreme right quite far along and all the sudden all ordinary news outlets lean "left" by comparison.
