maxcan··on Sqids – Generate short unique IDs from numbers
Yes, that's how I know I was roughly the 600,000th person to sign up for thefacebook.com.
maxcan··on Nuclear Conversion for Starship
AFAIK, the only nuclear rocket that makes sense is landing a reactor on an icy comet and using it to shoot super heated steam wherever you want thrust.

maxcan··on Proxima Fusion looks to take stellarators commercial
True. But if you replace the Hohlraum with dilithium and find an anti-matter supply you can power a warm drive for FTL travel. Just need to kick it now and then.
maxcan··on V0: Generative UI
How does one get off the waitlist?

My vercel login is with github, same username as here.

maxcan··on Using extra Firefox profiles to make my life better
Safari on OSX just added this.
maxcan··on Delta finds fake jet aircraft engine parts with forged airworthiness documents
IIRC (its been decades I think) that book was pretty critical of the unions working at the plant. Good luck getting that made in today's environment.
maxcan··on TypeScript Monorepo with NPM Workspaces
Second this.

pnpm's use of hard links is so perfect for monorepos. As far as your code knows they just have a normal, run of the mill node_modules but without the massive hit on speed and disk space.

maxcan··on Gematria
Have they tried decompressing the main shuttle bay?
maxcan··on Remove TypeScript
> The fact is that I actually rather like JavaScript. I'd go so far as to say it's my second favorite language after Ruby.

Tells this haskeller / TSer everything I need to know.

maxcan··on Air Force funds ‘blended wing body’ design for long-range, fuel-efficient flight
This is all assuming that Russia doesn't resort to nuclear, biological, or chemical attack.

In a conventional war, its true. NATO, or the US alone, or even some individual NATO members on their own, would cakewalk over Russia faster than the coalition did in the Gulf War.

Unfortunately, its pretty hard to tell what their actual red line is for going nuclear which radically invalidates the preceding paragraph.

maxcan··on Senators propose law that bans members of Congress from trading stocks
Im sure there are but not really aware of what they are. The one that I can think of is putting some downward pressure on asset prices when the market knows that a lot of wealthy people have to sell off assets somewhat quickly.

I've always felt that we should 5x-10x the salaries (Singapore style) of federal elected officials and cabinet secretaries but require them to divest their entire portfolio within 30 days of taking office and only hold securities issued by the US government, states, and localities.
maxcan··on Guam: The America that Americans forget
No, but they often add up to a stable Nash equilibrium.
maxcan··on Guam: The America that Americans forget
In the past you could have made an argument about foreign airlines not being held to FAA standards.

But today, FAA knows exactly which jurisdictions regulate airlines to a comparable standard and which don’t. Denying cabotage and other higher rights to those airlines is 100%, as you say, naked protectionism.

maxcan··on A reason for high housing prices: restrictive land-use regulations
In other words, regulations that increase the costs of building housing increase the costs of housing.

Funny how that works.

maxcan··on AWS us-east-1 down
There are some services (cloudfront for example) which require this region. Its not that much harder to have multiple regions in your deployment but putting everything in one is simpler for smaller startupy orgs.
maxcan··on Is frying food possible in space?
Love content like this. Looking forward to @maxthemeatguy videos of dry aging steaks by leaving them outside a space station for some period of time..
maxcan··on NASA has funded a bunch of early stage technologies
Governments are good at pure science, research, and individual technologies. They are not good at making products. That is fundamentally where private companies have a massive advantage.
maxcan··on Regent – Electric coastal travel
Trains really tend to struggle over open water. Very difficult for them to stay afloat.
maxcan··on Regent – Electric coastal travel
I believe it has a max demonstrated wave height of 5'.
maxcan··on Regent – Electric coastal travel
No wireless. Less space than a nomad. Lame.

maxcan··on Regent – Electric coastal travel
I believe that max demonstrated wave height will have more to do with the height of the hydrofoil than the wingspan / ground effect distance.

Having said that, I'm pretty sure the much larger Monarch (their further future 50-100pax model) will probably have longer vertical supports on the foils.

maxcan··on Regent – Electric coastal travel
This is the answer.
maxcan··on Hypersonic missiles are misunderstood
US Taxpayer: great, get those spacex contracts ready!
maxcan··on The Epic Stack
Personally I feel like TailwindUI is a missed opportunity.

Their opposition to abstracted utility classes means that anything you want to do has incredibly long, unreadable classes. Its quite a bit of work to abstract away the bits that you want.

https://daisyui.com is my absolute sweet spot for abstraction. Its a bit limited, especially compared to TwUI and flowbite but its developer experience is a joy.

maxcan··on Inductive charging highway section to be built in Florida
Earthquakes have little to do with it. They are simply an excuse for horrible policy. Go explain to Japan why earthquakes should prevent them from building effective infrastructure.
maxcan··on Vast new stores of water reported on the moon
Actually moon water can be quite valuable. Because it requires so much less energy to escape lunar gravity, if you have water, and if you can split it into hydrogen and oxygen, you can make a very effective gas station for rockets going to Mars and further and get a little respite from the tyranny of the rocket equation.
maxcan··on Al Jaffee, king of the Mad Magazine fold-in, has died
But, one could argue that it was truly Jake Tapper who perfected the art.

IYKYK.

maxcan··on Bob Lee, former CTO of Square, has died after being stabbed in San Francisco
SoBe murders don't count towards Miami city's total. I was speaking more about Miami city than MDC.
maxcan··on Bob Lee, former CTO of Square, has died after being stabbed in San Francisco
This is 100% consistent with my experience in Miami.

But, personally, I'd rather have the medicare-fraud-guy than the shits-on-the-street guy in my neighborhood. The former hurts me a little no matter where they live, the latter hurts me a lot but only if they are nearby.
