maxcan··on Polishing Cloth Updated
I'm thinking I should upgrade to a Mac Studio. The IIe really struggles to run any LLMs locally.
maxcan··on Polishing Cloth Updated
I have a Wallstreet Powerbook G3 and an Apple IIe. I ordered the updated cloth and will report back on compatibility issues with those old machines that aren't on the list or workarounds necessary to get the cloth to function.
maxcan··on SPCX is now Wall Street's most shorted new stock
true, but the other side of that trade is almost always an options market maker who will hedge their delta by trading the underlying stock. so, yes, buying a call doesn't directly represent share ownership, but it almost always results in a commensurate share purchase. not 1:1, but reflecting the delta of the option.
maxcan··on Tesla concealed fatal accidents to continue testing autonomous driving

Looking for more. tl;dr is that NHTSA publishes accident rates but not mileage. ISeeCars has access to legacy auto mileage from dealership data but guessed at mileage for Tesla's in the period in question. Their methodology was not released and was a fraction of the total mileage that Tesla recorded over that period.

I do agree that Tesla could do a much better job with data transparency. But the claims of the ISC report are pretty difficult to reconcile with the crash test ratings they've gotten from many regulators across the world.

maxcan··on Tesla concealed fatal accidents to continue testing autonomous driving
that study was pretty thoroughly debunked. Also, I believe it was put out by a lobbying group representing auto dealerships who see the Tesla DTC model as a mortal threat. There is a lot of legitimate criticism to be directed towards Tesla but the ISeeCars study "aint it".
maxcan··on Suddenly Everyone Is Scared to Dance at Concerts and Clubs
This feels like a complete BS story. Been to a bunch of festivals and concerts in the last few years and while cell phones have kind of ruined it, its because people are so caught up in filming terrible video clips of the stage they'll never watch instead of being present in the moment.
maxcan··on GraphQL: The enterprise honeymoon is over
I did. I really wanted to like it. I think it broke due to something I was doing with fragments or splitting up code in my monorepo. I may give it a shot again, from first principles it is a better approach.
maxcan··on GraphQL: The enterprise honeymoon is over
Can you elaborate? I've used URQL and Apollo with graphql code gen for type safety and am a big fan.

What about relay is so compelling for you? I'm not disagreeing, just genuinely curious since I've never really used it.

maxcan··on Inflatable Space Stations
When its such for my personal edification and idle wonderings, usually the former. If its something that is any way critical to a meaningful decision or something I'm going to publicly share, its the latter.
maxcan··on Inflatable Space Stations
I never understand why the rotating station concepts seem to all have rigid tethers, either in the form of a central boom or a rigid circular structure. It would seem like you could get a much larger diameter, so less rotational velocity and more comfort, by attaching rigid, or inflatable in this case, structures with a tether. Compressive loads are non existent, you just need to resist tensile loads.

Maybe I'll go ask the AI.

maxcan··on American Airlines flying empty Airbus A321neo across the Atlantic 20 times
There are quite a few specific procedures unique to crossing the North Atlantic. Part of it has to do with the absence of radar and VHF comms requiring HF or satellite communications which pilots will otherwise never use. I'm sure Pacific crossings have their own peculiarities but I'm less familiar.
maxcan··on Tesla remotely deactivates rapper's vehicle for singing about the Cybertruck?
In addition to all the other evidence pointing to this being a fake, Tesla is VERY clear that they don't have dealers.
maxcan··on Beyond Text: On-Demand UI Generation for Better Conversational Experiences

maxcan··on Why hasn't commercial air travel gotten any faster since the 1960s? (2009)
We do. And I believe that private is taxed more than commercial. Most of the FAA's funding comes from this.
maxcan··on Shine with Gleam
Are they killing unwanted minorities and political dissidents on an industrial scale? No, they aren’t. Ergo, they aren’t N*is. Labeling them as such is unfair to them and an insult to the memory of those killed by the actual kind.

There can be widespread bigotry that falls far far short of N*ism. Words and precision matter.

maxcan··on Boeing Starliner could brick ISS docking port if crew abandons it
infinity times better, obviously.
maxcan··on Boeing Starliner could brick ISS docking port if crew abandons it
nope.. its symmetrical about a bunch of axes. at most they'd need a 60 degree rotation, not 180 like USB-A. So this standard is precisely 3x better than USB-A
maxcan··on How babies and young children learn to understand language
This may come off as a little inappropriate but one thing I think about when learning another language is the usual mistakes or quirks that native speakers of that language display when speaking English. It turns out that quite often those are reflective of the correct form in their language.

It's helped me sound more natural in Japanese and Hebrew.

maxcan··on Show HN: I made a Chrome extension to clean up your Gmail inbox locally
Is yours open source? I'd be interested in contributing.

I'm just very wary of giving closed source extensions "the keys to the kingdom" and complete access to all of my eamil.

maxcan··on Tesla FSD head to head against Mercedes Driver Assist on the same road [video]
Counterpoint - Tesla is trying to avoid a local maximum where they are able to do robotaxi's in cars with $300,000 of equipment on roads that are precisely mapped down to the centimeter.

Waymo and Cruise may have beat them to "first robotaxi" but I'm not convinced that they have anywhere near a scalable, sustainable model.

maxcan··on Show HN: Detwemoji – replace Twitter's emoji with OS standard implementations
I don't like Twitter's emoji. I prefer Apple's implementation. I spent about 5 minutes on this, thank you Claude.

This isn't pretty at all, I know. It's not meant to showcase any kind of personal talents. Just an itch I finally scratched.

maxcan··on Acoustic cameras can see sound (2023) [video]
Completely agree.

The Expanse novels & series and Hail Mary have ruined me for fantasy-science-fiction. I love the idea of having one big conceit and then building a universe that is as consistent as possible with everything from known physics to known sociology and psychology given that conceit.

For the expanse it was fusion drives and the protomolecule. For Hail Mary it was astrophage.

Just like the magical linguistic tools of Hail Mary, the Expanse broke this a bit too with things like spinning up the asteroids without ripping them apart. But, these are still two of the best hard science fiction out there. Sorry Cixin, Remembrance of Earth's Past was fantastic but it quickly devolved into fantasy.

One note, I always thought the spinning up asteroids part of The Expanse was particularly unfortunate because the plot would have worked just as well with giant spinning stations on the asteroid surfaces to let the belters live in limited gravity.

maxcan··on Los Angeles Becomes First US City to Outlaw Digital Discrimination
Exactly. The mostly likely outcome is providers just pulling out of poorer neighborhoods or even the whole city (if forced).
maxcan··on JAL A359 at Tokyo collided with Coast Guard DH8C on runway and burst into flames
Compare and contrast to Aeroflot 1492:

Aeroflot: 41 passenger deaths, many bags saved.

JAL: 0 passenger deaths, 0 bags saved.

maxcan··on Thanks to Don Bateman, airplanes don't crash into mountains anymore (2016)
Came here to say this. He is excellent. Also, the Opposing Bases podcast is wonderful.

Agreed, but here is a great explanation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_k1TQGK3mZI
maxcan··on Tesla driver who killed 2 people while using autopilot must pay $23,000, no jail
I think drivers are fine with causing a certain amount of risk to pedestrians. Strong, predictable penalties would lower the typical risk level drivers were willing to subject pedestrians to.

It’s not binary, it’s a distribution and I do believe you can alter that distribution.

maxcan··on Tesla driver who killed 2 people while using autopilot must pay $23,000, no jail
Deterrence clearly would be served from drivers predictably knowing that causing pedestrian fatalities would lead to jail time.
