mauriciob··on Will Google Drive Snoop Inside Your Data? Google Needs to Be Clearer
Data mining? I have no problem with that. Even the grocery store I go does that.

I'm not exactly OK when they say they can "reproduce, modify, create derivative works (...), publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute such content."

Also, I wouldn't call my resume a "critical file". The source of the work I create (e.g. software), is a "critical file" if they can just use it however they want.

mauriciob··on Ubuntu Releases 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin
I installed and configured 11.10 from scratch last night. Now I'm going to do it all over (no upgrade) just out of spite.
mauriciob··on Google's opening slides in the trial v. Oracle
IANAL, but I read that you have to sue to protect your property (copyright, brand name, etc). If you don't, you are waiving your rights on it, which is why Google may be using Classpath and Harmony as examples.
mauriciob··on Removing Windows 8 is better than...
You should use the "old desktop" on a PC. Also, you can divide screen between metro apps or between metro and desktop, and it's not that bad.
mauriciob··on Microsoft shows off universal translator that preserves your voice
You are right.

English version says: "So... I'm just gonna open up for questions. Anything you wanna know... you know... as usual on any(?) subject but probably about what we are doing today"

Spanish version says: "Bienvenido a [...] 2012 donde (...) podrá ver de primera mano como Microsoft Research esta estudiando las tendencias tecnologicas clave que definirán el siglo 21."

Which translates to something like: "Welcome to [...] 2012 where (you)'ll be able to see firsthand how Microsoft Research is studying the key tendencies that will define the 21st century."

mauriciob··on Why is nobody using SSL Client Certificates?
The two major public banks in Brazil require clients to provide additional information if you are on a "new" PC. One of them asks personal information (id numbers, etc), the other sends an SMS to your cell phone and you enter that number (a very good two-factor auth).

They don't use client certs, though, and I have no knowledge on the private banks.

mauriciob··on Linode Manager Security Incident
They probably used Linode to generate bitcoins. And they kept them there.
mauriciob··on How Browsers Work: Behind the Scenes of Modern Web Browsers
Best way to read it is selecting all the text. The white text on red "background" is not bad.
mauriciob··on My Addressbook? Keep it. Telephone numbers are a disgrace to our generation.
I find it rather odd that they didn't group the codes.

Wouldn't it be better if they made something like this: [phone number].[area code].[country code]?

I mean, I don't really have much information on the E.164 standard, but the information o Wikipedia seems to show that at least the country code is separated from the other numbers, allowing each country to have its own structure.

mauriciob··on Gmail’s new look
And... I was wrong :)

I just switched to the new look and (after changing the density to "Compact") I could not notice a difference on the padding.

It was a nice surprise.

Are you working on anything related to this design?

mauriciob··on Gmail’s new look
No, I'm commenting from experience on the preview that GMail had.

I'll watch the video when I get home, but Google is having a love affair with white space on this new layout, I'm doubtful about the padding on the email list.

mauriciob··on Gmail’s new look
That padding is one of the only issues I have with the new layout. They should have left an option with the classic padding.
mauriciob··on I explained SEO to an 80 year old client with this metaphor
Wow. I explained the memory usage/needs in a very similar way to my uncle, only I said that the books were 'carried' by the person (memory), not put on a table.

Yours is better, though. I'll be stealing that :)

mauriciob··on Git 1.7.7 changes affecting the everyday developer
> Adding cache plugins, back up in a sec :)

The next thing Google will cache is your maintenance message.

You should serve those messages with HTTP 503, not HTTP 200.

mauriciob··on IPhone 4S: A5 chip, 8MP camera, and Siri voice recognition
I was getting that too. It seems to be fixed now.

Edit: Down again. www.apple.com (i.e. the home page) went down as well.

mauriciob··on Windows 8 Metro UI can only launch IE (not chrome, Firefox, etc)
ChromeBooks (ChromeOS, actually) isn't the market leader.
mauriciob··on No Windows 8 ARM support for x86 apps
> might have

> but there will

FTFY. Sorry.

mauriciob··on Check Out The New Blue Screen of Death in Windows 8
That is a 'kernel panic' screen. The lighter, the better.
mauriciob··on Google and OpenDNS made the web faster for everyone today
No, it uses the same DNS server your OS uses.
mauriciob··on Google Buys Illegal +.com Domain Name on Domain Aftermarket
All I read in this article was "+ is NOT allowed in the .com TLD".
mauriciob··on Googling "Show HN" returns HN's startups as results (not HN posts)
Google probably associates the keywords on the HN post title with the link that it's leading to (which includes "Show HN").

That's why they tell you to create meaningful links instead of "click here".

mauriciob··on (debunked) PayPal vulnerability allows access to any account within 30 seconds
This is just people that don't know how GMail works.

Quoting your first link:

> I receive internal business emails addressed to this other guy and when I email him back, it comes back to me.

It obviously will come back to him, because the guy is emailing himself.

mauriciob··on IPv6 Test
What Google seems to be testing is whether you will be able to connect to a site that is served by both IPv4 and IPv6 (i.e. A and AAAA DNS records).

I believe their message is incorrect. It should be "Your system is not using IPv6 connection by default OR you don't have it."

Also, the IPv6 is available on <random>.ds.ipv6test.google.com, which is what they use to check your conectivity.

mauriciob··on Inspired by XKCD:903, Wikipedia steps to philosophy
Yes, you do. 15 steps.
mauriciob··on This is What Irony Tastes Like: Capcom and the PSN Outage
Hence it being an End User License Agreement.
mauriciob··on Why I get my entertainment via BitTorrent
I've only seen one Steam game that couldn't be bought in Brazil (I still don't know why).

I'm guessing it depends at which store you are buying it. Many of the US stores don't sell to foreigners, though. Could they be afraid of fraud?

mauriciob··on Why I get my entertainment via BitTorrent
It is illegal in pretty much every country (US included) to give fake information. If you don't own/rent a place in the US, you shouldn't inform it.
mauriciob··on Microsoft to acquire Skype
What does Facebook have to do with Microsoft?
mauriciob··on Google Chrome Hacked?
I doubt Google will hire them. They seem to be a very unprofessional company, even with their skilled people. They may pay to know about this security breach, though.
mauriciob··on Linode outage in Fremont
If you already had downtime at this datacenter, transfer your linode to another one. It will only take ~20 mins.

My linode is in Newark and it has been a long time since I had the last problem there. Also, Linode is based on Newark.
