matttb··on For those who can afford it, quitting has become the ultimate form of self-care
Yes, I worry about it a lot. Another thing that I worry is if I will have a lower earning potential as I age causing compounding issues.
matttb··on Experian’s credit freeze security is still a joke
Debit cards do not help credit score. If your score is too low or non-existent you often have to get a 'secured' credit card which means you have a limit (often it's still a low limit which I don't understand), and that limit is how much cash you let the company hold for you. It doesn't seem any different to me than having a bank account + debit card. When you're done using a 'secured' card you get your initial money back

I had a property management company tell me they wouldn't rent to me if my credit wasn't good enough even if I paid the entire lease up front
matttb··on Email from Jeff Bezos to employees
And canceling Amazon Prime requires you to click a button saying you want to cancel four times.
matttb··on Analysis: Robinhood protected from lawsuits by user agreement, Congress
And I think more importantly, Webull said from the beginning what the issue was and communicated their efforts to fix it. Robinhood put up a blogpost that made it sound like everything was their choice and then went completely silent the entire day.
matttb··on Analysis: Robinhood protected from lawsuits by user agreement, Congress
I think many users feel that RH affected both their money and convenience
matttb··on Robinhood denies claims that it sold GameStop shares out from under its traders
Here's a longer clip btw: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6ibh06A-Mw

The idea that what is happening is illegal market manipulation is kind of ridiculous to me since it's not really any different than anyone (including shorts) going on CNBC and talking about why you should buy X stock

matttb··on An Update on Market Volatility
Webull had to because of Apex, midday they got that sorted out and allowed buying again
matttb··on An Update on Market Volatility
Also in the event that everything is true and straightforward, why wouldn't they say that at the start (and through the whole day)
matttb··on Robinhood is limiting purchases of stocks: AMC, Blackberry, Nokia, and GameStop
> I don't think this was Robinhood's choice.

They sure made it sound like it was their choice. https://blog.robinhood.com/news/2021/1/28/keeping-customers-...

matttb··on We Are Preparing a Class Action Lawsuit Against Robinhood
> Robinhood was one of many brokerages to implement trading restrictions. e.g. Bank of America/Merrill Edge also shut down buy orders for GME. Citadel does not have the same relationship with these other brokerages. So, to say Robinhood made their decision based on a conflict of interest doesn't hold water.

My issue is those brokerages said they were closing orders because of Apex clearing. Robinhood basically said that they chose to do it themselves: https://blog.robinhood.com/news/2021/1/28/keeping-customers-...

matttb··on Google Images Restored
I'd never heard of this before so I searched it and the first result turned up this[0] (see lines 2-4/Exhibit A). Big jump from selling public domain images to seeking out payment for public domain images.

Many, many developers did not go to school and have no 'CS' type learning
matttb··on I failed to make LinkedIn fix their broken international domain URL parser
Pretty sure it's just to combat scraping
matttb··on I now have an Oculus paperweight
What I've found that works for this is getting a permalink (either through the option menu or via the comment timestamp). The direct comment link will show (some amount of) children, though if it goes too deep you'll have to repeat the process..
matttb··on I built that “so-and-so is typing” feature in chat (2014)
> Do you anticipate typing private info, backspacing, then replacing it with some bland query about switching internet plans?

I anticipate people accidentally pasting something from their clipboard that could be private/sensitive.

matttb··on I no longer build software
It's dramatically easier to find work than to consult. Especially if you've spent your career at 1-2 very small companies and have zero 'network' to tap into. The idea of beginning consulting is more daunting to me than switching careers is.
matttb··on Cameras on San Diego streetlights turned off until ordinance in place
You have to put it in the 'about' section. The email that displays to you isn't visible to anyone else
matttb··on ZSA Moonlander: A next-generation ergonomic keyboard
This is exactly why I love my Ergodox. My biggest hand issue was pinky pain, and with the ergodox I've moved basically all of the 'stretch' pinky keys to thumb/index finger. In particular moving backspace/enter/ctrl to the thumb cluster makes me feel like I can never use a keyboard without one again. It's completely eliminated pinky pain on both of my hands.
matttb··on It’s OK for your open source library to be a bit shitty (2015)
Since there are comments refuting you, I'll provide an anecdote the other way. My coworkers absolutely do this to every single potential interviewee.

On multiple occasions I've had to talk them out of not wanting to even interview based on one random file in a random repo by the interviewee.

Because of this, when I start applying I hide all my repos that I'm not mostly proud of.

Can you just use a VM? I run it in Parallels at my work which only has mac laptops.
matttb··on Jeff Bezos Commits $10B to Address Climate Change
> Does this still work if he puts this money towards a cause you're not keen of?

This also applies in reverse. Here's an interesting article on some of this stuff if you're looking for another opinion - specifically #4 and on: https://slatestarcodex.com/2019/07/29/against-against-billio...

matttb··on Congrats! Web scraping is legal! (US precedent)
Because of the court case. This is just an injunction pending an actual decision.
matttb··on Congrats! Web scraping is legal! (US precedent)
> Surely I'm not reading this correctly. This would seem to suggest that websites are not legally allowed to prevent bots from crawling their sites. Lots of sites have ToS preventing such things, are those legally void now? Are captchas on public pages illegal, even if you request the page 8000 times in a second?

This is just a preliminary injunction. This wasn't an actual ruling on the case. This just says that until there is a ruling they can't stop the scraping to make sure the company isn't put under while waiting for an actual ruling.

matttb··on An account is now required to read Reddit comment threads?
I'm not sure if it's YT or the channel creators, but I've noticed a lot videos are popping up the 'Also check out these videos' thing at the end of their videos (as an overlay, not part of the video), and it covers up the actual video content with no way to hide/remove it.

matttb··on Advent of Code 2019
Really just for the people who go for leaderboard slots. You don't need to do any preparing.
matttb··on Ask HN: Do you write tests before the implementation?
I always answer this honestly in interviews and I've always had my interviewers say they feel the same way.

I think maybe it's a thing where you're not supposed to say it, but once you do, it frees the interviewer up to admit it as well and they're happy.

In addition to this you can do something like mapping Shift+Caps Lock to be an actual Caps Lock toggle. Now you get 3 buttons for one and it works amazingly well.
