matttb··on Major Toronto Utility Company Stores Customers' Passwords in Plain Text
SRP, one of the two major utility services in Phoenix does this as well
matttb··on Pixel 8 Pro
I don't put cases (or even screen protectors) on mine either (since 2015). I've dropped it many times, obviously, but I've only ever had the edges of the phone get the slightest nicks - which I prefer to having a case on it.
matttb··on Pixel 8 Pro
My wife and I are on the pixel 3 still as well. I hate the size of the 8, but that camera sure looks real nice...

Her pixel 3 is also starting to shutdown randomly which is concerning since our last phones were the bootlooping nexus 5x.

matttb··on Tell HN: The ratio of wants-to-be-hired to is-hiring is at a record high 0.94
This was my experience as well. Not a single real inquiry, just spam. I asked the mods to delete my posts on those threads and the spam email vanished
matttb··on Tell HN: The ratio of wants-to-be-hired to is-hiring is at a record high 0.94
I just got a lot of spam email until I asked the mods to delete my post and the spam vanished
matttb··on Build Your Own Redis with C/C++
> The code is written as direct and straightforwardly as the author could. It’s mostly plain C with minimal C++ features.

Sounds fair to me

matttb··on How I survived a year in ‘the hole’ without losing my mind
> I was a known atheist in prison, due to some reading material I received in the mail. Outside of the SHU, people often tried to engage me about my beliefs, which I avoided.

Did this cause any issues other than attempted conversions?

matttb··on The Restaurant Industry’s Worst Idea: QR Code Menus
I've certainly never tried to stop it from updating. It's on version 8.4.600.440402475.27. When I point mine at a QR code absolutely nothing at all happens
matttb··on The Restaurant Industry’s Worst Idea: QR Code Menus
My pixel3 doesn't do this

matttb··on Tell HN: I was tired of being a perfectionist so I built an app within 24 hours

You made it not simple

matttb··on Show HN: Hacker News bot that automated archive finding and commenting
I'm very happy they don't allow them. It would probably be flooded with annoying and useless bots like reddit. Sure you can downvote them, but it's still extra effort * a lot of people's attention
matttb··on The rise of 'stealerships' and the shady economics of car buying
> I guess technically it’s not false advertising since the advertised car we wanted “sold”.

I worked at a car dealership and they absolutely lied about this stuff. They would say that the law lets them do it as long as it was sold within 24 hours, but they also kept advertising cars that had been sold weeks ago. Every time someone came in and asked they'd give the "Sorry it was sold within the past 24 hours" lie.

matttb··on MangoDB: An open-source MongoDB alternative
I've worked with tens of developers over 8 years and I've seen this many times.

I don't think they're 'actively trying to harm projects', but the person you're responding to never implied that in any way.

matttb··on DMV approves Cruise and Waymo for commercial service in parts of Bay Area
They are referring to the multiple parts in 'TFA' talking about Waymo using safety drivers and a 65mph limit.
matttb··on ‎Amplosion: Redirect AMP Links on the App Store
After you do a search there's a 'tools' button. Clicking it gives you a dropdown with the option to change from 'all results' to 'verbatim'. There's also the 'Advanced Search' https://www.google.com/advanced_search where even if you enter a word in quotes in the 'this exact word or phrase' box you still get results without your query.

I don't have an example query, but it happens all the time. I put a query in quotes and google gives results that neither have the quote in the page blurb on google nor on the destination page.

matttb··on On YouTube’s recommendation system
I want it to diversify a lot more. There's a lot of room between 'WoW related videos' and 98% of your sidebar is one particular creator (asmon).
matttb··on Exploring Clang/LLVM optimization on programming horror
Note Gcc does do this, just at -O2 and above, whereas Clang does it on -O1 and above. Gcc also only does it on C++ code whereas Clang does it on both C and C++
matttb··on In defense of hard counters in real time strategy games
High/low crush is different than high/low options. He's talking about things like Street Fighter's Rose s.HK going over attacks that hit low or sliding attacks that duck under attacks that hit high.

Also people cannot SRK/DP on reaction to all attacks or the game would be completely broken so saying '2nd to attack wins' is a bit odd since it's only in the situation where both players use an invincible move.
