mattmurdog··on The Unemployable Programmer
Spot on! Couldn't have agreed more. I'm currently hiring JS dev and 99% of them are self proclaimed "experts" 10 out of 10 but they barely scratch the surface with the potential of JS.
mattmurdog··on The Unemployable Programmer
Couldn't have agreed more. Relevance is the key.
mattmurdog··on Agile Won't Fix Your Products
Agile won't fix your products because you can't fix clueless, bumbling, incompetent engineers. I've done the whole agile thing in small teams of 5 and gotten more done than working with 100 offshore developers who find excuse to complain about everything every chance they get. Agile doesn't fix the pride you have in the work that you do. That's the primary motivation for good work. Knowing that your work matters and you're not just there to collect a pay check and check out as soon as possible.
mattmurdog··on Ask HN: Why has nobody built a better Wordpress?
Wordpress single handedly provided jobs for thousands of web developers. It's a fantastic CMS and no one has built a better one the same way no one has "tried" to rebuilt a "better" Google or Facebook.
mattmurdog··on Go the Fuck Home: Engineering Work/Life Balance
This is extremely valid.
mattmurdog··on University Students Made a Working Model Hyperloop
The Hyperloop would be a nightmare to inspect in a natural disaster. I know how difficult it is now to check on trains now, can't imagine this being fun.
mattmurdog··on Ask HN: What can I do to turn things around and make my 30's “good”?
I would look into trying to get your criminal past expunged. Talk to some lawyers, figure it out. My ex-roommate was able to get his wiped, although it wasn't a felony sex offense case.

Work hard to get a new job, even if it's a crappy one. This will be the key to help you turn your life around. I know it did for me. I struggled during my early late 20s too, and when I turned 30 it felt overwhelming... like what have I been doing with my life? But when I put my head down and started to work hard.

Career became my main focus in my 30s and while I am much older now, I can say without doubt, everything got better. I was able to not worry about money, date more, make more friends, indulge in personal interests, etc.

Use this time living at home to save, take any job related to your interest. Keep looking for better opportunities. Save more money. Get that job. Get that girl. Get your life turned around mentally and emotionally. Don't dwell on the past. Good luck!

mattmurdog··on Why Your Low Price Is Killing Your Business
Someone in CA would need to charge much more than someone in TX. Same skill sets, same gusto. Guess who gets the job? Good article, but if only life was that easy.
mattmurdog··on Is HTML a Programming Language?
HTML is like Powerpoint? Wow, if only it was that easy. It's more like Excel IMO if we really want to make such an asinine comparison.
mattmurdog··on Stanford – The Get Rich University (2012)
Not rich, but well off. Upper middle class.
mattmurdog··on Ask HN: Work for free for 4 months for a $55k job after?
Honestly, i'd go beg for your old job back especially if you were making six figures. Also Ruby is different than Java, very different. A Ruby bootcamp will not and has not prepared you to become a full-time developer. Lastly, no company worth a damn would make someone work for free for 4 months and then pay them 55k. We pay our interns that much if not more and they don't even know what MVC or OOP is.
mattmurdog··on Ask HN: When do you know your startup has failed?
When I ran a start up, I did it because I had other sources of income. There were even times I took on a second job just so I could fund my own start up. If you haven't had a salary for the last 4 months maybe it's time to consider getting a job. This is no longer a start up, it's a hobby. If you still believe in it, don't quit. Otherwise sell your share to your rich partner who apparently isn't phased by this at all.
mattmurdog··on Startup company denies a female programmer a job because of her looks
If a guy came in for a job interview wearing shorts, sunglasses and Axe body spray he probably wouldn't get the job either.

This is also for an internship, act professionally, act like a grown up, act like this matters. Clearly she didn't and is now complaining online and bad mouthing a company with good hiring practices.

Her gender has nothing to do with this. The company being all male has nothing to do with this.

Her being unprofessional and everyone else being more professional regardless of gender does.

mattmurdog··on JavaScript experts: Microsoft's new Spartan browser rocks
Isn't that sort of what they said about IE10 and 11? I still can't run them without them crashing from time to time.
mattmurdog··on Application Engineer Salary in Tokyo
It's very different than what it's like here that's for sure. You're expected to work longer hours for little(r) pay. It's a cultural thing to slave and slave away and to be happy that you have a job and you're contributing to a greater good.
mattmurdog··on Red Flags for Freelance Web Developers
If I had a dollar for every "client" that asked to meet me at Starbucks and sign an NDA then I'd be a millionaire.
mattmurdog··on Dear Teacher, a Video Game Developer Is a Real Job and Should Be Celebrated
I wouldn't be where I am today if it weren't for video games. Eventually got bored of playing games and decided to make my own.
mattmurdog··on Why people hate JavaScript?
This can be resolved very easily with inspectors or writing educated console logs.
mattmurdog··on Why people hate JavaScript?
This is absolutely correct. People who hate JS can't properly code JS. It's a fluid language that can be done in several ways and unless someone understands it fluently they will merely think it's "not a real" language.
mattmurdog··on Why Many Smart, Low-Income Students Don't Apply to Elite Schools
I had long graduated by the time Occupy started. But yes, it just wasn't worth it.
mattmurdog··on Why Many Smart, Low-Income Students Don't Apply to Elite Schools
Only one god damn hill, but that was another trip all the way across another god damn town when I needed to go buy groceries ;P
mattmurdog··on Why Many Smart, Low-Income Students Don't Apply to Elite Schools
I still remember the day my father pulled me aside and told me in secret (my mom would have freaked out) that we couldn't really afford college. He recommended that I stayed close to home and to go to a local school, which I did for 4+ years with an average of four hours a day worth of commuting. Occasionally, I also had a part time job that added almost two more extra hours of commuting because it took me to another side of the town and I had to walk half a mile to get to work after getting off the bus.
mattmurdog··on Why We Removed the Word ‘Hacker’ from Buffer Job Descriptions
Because it should never have been used in the first place.
mattmurdog··on Best way to handle interviewer asking me out on a date after tech screen?
That's sort of the Catch-22. A guy simply can't ask a girl he likes out. A girl who's unqualified feels slighted because a guy is interested in her. What has this world come to?
mattmurdog··on For Asian Americans, a changing landscape on college admissions
Asians from poor neighborhoods still are because they're Asian. And if they are male, then they are even more discriminated against than Asian women who are both "female" and "Asian".

Basically Asian in general regardless if you're from overseas or from NY, you're getting shafted. And if you're male... good luck, you better have a 5.0 GPA and be the captain of the football team to get in any where.

mattmurdog··on My experience of interviewing for a job at Apple
Something similar happened to me years ago. I later learned the hiring manager had left. But when they contacted me, I had already moved on.
mattmurdog··on Ask HN: What to do when all you have is talent?
You sound a lot like programmers I constantly run in to who claim to have 10+ years of experience and rate themselves a 10 out of 10 on everything known to man. But yet can't land a full time job and just coast from freelance to freelance work and take on projects that my 8 year old nephew and/or a chimp could have done/automated. Like some of the replies here, these guys come off super arrogant and are just not personalable. These are all major red flags. Not to mention they're just clever at being deceptive, not only to potential employers but also themselves. Because when pressed in technical interviews or tests they fold. They fold hard.

If you really want to break in, I would be honest with what you can do. There's no shame in being self taught. Use that trait as a strength to show your capability and interest to learn new things. That you're autonomous and motivated. Talk about how you were able to learn new things or how you were the driving force behind something. Don't be afraid to take a smaller role and listen to others. Your coworkers are assets not ladders for you to climb over. And most importantly, work with smarter people. Soon enough you'll learn that you're actually not that talented... or maybe you really are. Good luck.

mattmurdog··on We need more STEM majors with liberal arts training
It's negative when people start to pigeonhole you and tell you you can't do certain things because you're not suppose to know how.
mattmurdog··on We need more STEM majors with liberal arts training
I get this a lot. I have a Masters and several minors in nothing but Liberal Arts. But I work in CS at a fairly high level. It just blows people mind who have a hard time seeing how they can possibly ever relate to one another. To me they're all the same. I'm drawn and willing to learn whatever that interests me. If anything, I've always felt that I can learn CS on my own (which I did) but I wouldn't be able to learn Liberal Arts stuff if I wasn't exposed to it in a classroom environment.
mattmurdog··on Show HN: Hacker Uses This
Uh no they don't. Developers do.
