matt-attack··on Apple should end their Google search partnership (2023)
That because they search using their url bar which is exactly what this article is talking about.

If Apple changed the default search engine all these people you know would instantly just starting using something new.

matt-attack··on MIT abandons requirement of DEI statements for hiring and promotions
But the problem is they can’t even get “diverse” right. Do they mean diverse in ideas? In thought? In opinion? No.

My LARGE company is on a tirade to ensure we use diverse supplies. We’re collecting metrics on this so we can proudly state how many diverse vendors we we use. When asked what we define as diverse they stated (among other things) that they were members of the LGBQ community. So I asked “so our company is very much concerned if the owners of the companies we work with are bisexual?”

Im married to a woman, but that doesn’t preclude the possibility that I’m bi-sexual. So if, in addition to being attracted to my wife, I’m also attracted to men, then all of a sudden I’m a priority for the company.

It boggles my mind.

matt-attack··on Tesla reportedly drops plan to build $25,000 EV
Weight had no relevance for the bulk of (most people’s?) miles. Flat ground at highest speeds, weight has zero bearing on fuel usage.

matt-attack··on Man creatively sneaks onto Delta flight, but gets caught
Why is the press somehow making this out to be such a security matter? Seems like this is just a simple case of theft in the amount of three or $400. I failed to see how there’s any real security issue here. The man went through security his bags were checked, ID was checked to ensure he wasn’t on a no fly list.

This seems like a petty crime.

Worse the newscaster has to go and say it’s *our* problem that our “private information” is being taken. Sorry he was stealing a $400 flight from the airline. Don’t try to pin that on the port customers. It should be of no concern to us. If someone steals my barcode what do I care? I’m still going to get on the plane. It’s their crappy system that permits this, please don’t burden the consumer with managing your security.

FWIW Ticketmaster barcodes can’t be screenshotted (they’re dynamic). Seems the airlines should just improve their tech.

matt-attack··on Caltech restores standardized test requirement for undergraduate admission
Is it possible the entire country is slowly coming out of a strange psychological haze that has plagued the country for the last few years? This period I think will forever be studied and recognized as a moment in time where the country just lost all rational thought and devolved into a strange collective brain fog.
matt-attack··on Tesla reportedly drops plan to build $25,000 EV
Why is it the most environmentally friendly car when pure EVs are also practical and widely available. I fail to see how adding a fossil fuel burning motor, no matter how efficient, is anything other than worse for the environment.
matt-attack··on Why some vehicles are set to lose access to carpool lanes in California
Good. No one needs to be incentivized to buy a gas burning car (hybrid) even if it has better mileage than a 4runner. It always was a ludicrous idea.

And separately, EV are everywhere. No need to incentivize those sales either.

matt-attack··on How I replaced deadly garage door torsion springs (2002)
True but by adjusting the angle you still end up with a fixed weight throughout the run. A spring force changes throughout the movement of the garage door and that’s chosen to match the unusual fact that the garage door’s weight changes as it’s gets progressively rolled up onto the top rails.
matt-attack··on Tests for consciousness in humans and beyond
> appear to

Funny thing is you could absolutely say the same thing about every other human on the planet. There is just no way for you to confirm that I’m having a subjective experience. I might be acting like I am. And so might everyone else. The only one you can be absolutely sure of is yourself.

We all just sort of assume that other people have consciousness but it’s impossible to know for sure.

For what it’s worth, all your comments on this perspective along with the silicon analogy are excellent and were eye opening for me. I too was dismissive and it took me a sec to really understand your analogy and point but I get it now. Nicely stated!
matt-attack··on Fingerprints can be recreated from the sounds made when you swipe a screen
I feel like someday we’ll be able to parse the electromagnetic waves that emit from our brain as a result of our basic internal thoughts. That is, it should be theoretically possible to read minds at a distance.
matt-attack··on Keep your phone number private with Signal usernames
Phone numbers are fast becoming a global, persistent, shared user identifier across applications, business, and government.

Think of how many systems innocently ask for phone numbers as a hard requirement for account creation (under the guise of DFA). Think of all the restaurants that innocently ask for it “so we can text you when your tables ready”, or when you buy a shirt at Banaba Republic, “can I get a phone number”. Like seriously, WTF?

In reality it’s now the defacto method to identify and reconcile your records across ecosystems.

Apple needs to create throw away phone numbers like they’ve successfully done with email addresses. I expect this to be their next iCloud+ offering.

Otherizing is however in the eye of the beholder. Today otherness is a prized attribute and thus not to be taken in a negative light. Instead, with the burgeoning of identity politics, speaking in a specific dialect is a source of pride. I fail to see how it’s insulting any longer.

matt-attack··on Vision Pro Teardown – Why those fake eyes look so weird
Yep. Same for the other end of the cable. I’ve heard folks ask why it doesn’t use a mag connector like on the Apple Watch since it appears to mimic the shape.
matt-attack··on Vision Pro Teardown – Why those fake eyes look so weird
People will presumable share these devices with various people in their family. I could see the auto adjustment being pretty critical.
matt-attack··on Vision Pro Teardown – Why those fake eyes look so weird
Agree. I don’t think people realize just how many incoming video streams this thing has to process. I’ve heard it’s like 14 or so independent streams of video that needs processing in extremely low latency ways. Apple had to build an entire dedicated chip just to handle the realtime processing of this much incoming data.

Struggling to see what’s so wrong about it. I can imagine a future where AR goggles are worn by most everyone regardless of the activity.
