mastry··on The Horror of Microsoft Teams
Teams does have a "Do not disturb" setting. Either right-click the taskbar icon or click your user picture in the app.
mastry··on FBI tells lawmakers it can't access Dayton gunman's phone
>> "Never let a good crisis go to waste" -- Winston Churchill, probably

Possibly, but Rahm Emanuel said it about 11 years ago [1].

mastry··on Fast Software, the Best Software
How? You can only have one (on SQL Server anyway). Maybe I don't understand your point.
mastry··on Fast Software, the Best Software
It depends on how much data you have in the table you're adding the index to and how much traffic you're dealing with. I deal with this every day (SQL 2017) and I assure you that adding an index to a large table has noticeable overhead in a heavily used system.
mastry··on Ask HN: What's Your Hobby?
That’s pretty surprising coming from you. I would have guessed.... stand up comedy.
mastry··on Ask HN: What's Your Hobby?
Building drones - sometimes I actually fly them.
mastry··on Ask HN: Is it just me or is the IT field becoming discriminatory?
To be fair to Automattic, that last quoted line is actually referring to a research project - not their hiring practices...

> For our initial research, we’re looking for women and non-binary people.......

But I understand your frustration. I have 20 years experience and I'm currently looking for a job (considering a recent offer, actually). Age discrimination is real IMO but there's little you can do about it (very hard to prove). Move on, find an employer with more realistic hiring practices. You don't want to work for the discriminatory companies anyway.

mastry··on Photon Micro GUI
A lot of DAWs use these. With the ones I have used you click the knob and then drag (up to turn the knob left, down for right). It's really horrible actually.
mastry··on Ask HN: Why are hiring processes flawed and testing random standards?
I have no answer to your question, but I can at least offer some sympathy and confirmation. I've been looking for a remote position for months and have been eliminated from consideration many times because I didn't have "X" months experience with specific technology "Y" - which could be easily learned by _any_ experienced developer. It's baffling ... and deflating.
mastry··on Kuo: Apple to include new scissor switch keyboard in MacBook
> Outside of the keyboard fiasco what else has Apple designed that’s so bad?

How about the first generation Pencil? To charge it you had to plug it in to your iPad.... it looked ridiculous and was very distracting. Thankfully, they fixed this in the second generation.

mastry··on Sushi. Since when has risking tapeworm infection been irresistibly alluring?
I love sushi, but gave it up about 2 years ago for this exact reason. We were at the Eiffel Tower for lunch (part of a tour) and they served us a raw beef concoction. I tried it, and spent the entire flight back to the US extremely ill (I'll spare you the details). When I commented that I would never eat raw beef again, my wife asked me how that was different from sushi.... wise woman.
mastry··on Facebook picked Rust to implement Libra
I think Rust is probably too complex for the average enterprise developer who seldom thinks about code outside of work. Not that these developers aren't smart - they just have different life priorities than a lot of HN readers and Rust experts.
mastry··on Walmart Grocery is now offering a $98 per year ‘Delivery Unlimited’ subscription
In my experience, Amazon is no better in the customer service department. I recently ordered some unscented deodorant from Amazon and they sent me some horrible smelling "Sport" scent. Fine, mistakes happen, but when I went to return it the item was marked as "not returnable". No other options. So they basically stole $17 from me and there's nothing I can do short of filing in small claims court. It was a very Google-esque experience.
mastry··on Puerto Rico energy plan introduces MiniGrids to avoid repeat of Hurricane Maria
Interesting. I spent several years at a small regional power company where we did some initial work on smart meters. That was probably 10 years ago and from what I understand they're still trying to get it all working on a large scale. Are you referring to something more than smart meters?
mastry··on Salesforce is buying Tableau for $15.7B
It's good but the free version doesn't let you share your results.
mastry··on Perspectives on Cloud Outcomes [pdf]
Plenty of Accenture fluff in here, but a little worrying that so many companies are not getting what they want out of cloud technologies.

"The barrier noted most frequently by respondents in their top three was “security and compliance risk” (65%), a view echoed across nearly all segments. The second most commonly noted barrier was “complexity of business and organizational change” (55%), with “legacy infrastructure and/or application sprawl” (43%) coming in a third, followed closely by “lack of cloud skills with the organization” (42%)."

mastry··on Ask HN: What tools do you use for system design?
Lately I've been using SimpleDiagrams [1]. The sketch look and the simpler UI is a nice change from Visio.

mastry··on Achieving 100k connections per second with Elixir
That was a helpful and interesting article. Thanks.
mastry··on Lenovo Launches Ultra-Thin ThinkPad P1: X1 Carbon Meets Workstation
Why does Lenovo persist with the Quadro GPUs? None of their workstation models have the option for a GTX 10-series. I recently bought a gaming laptop (not a gamer) so I could have the GPU power for ML. Surely there's a big enough market for this to warrant a ThinkPad option by now?
mastry··on Why Discrete Math Is Important
The Coursera/UC series on discrete mathematics [1] looks like a good introduction.

mastry··on The Kindle Changed the Book Business – Can It Change Books?
The Kindle app on iPad is no better for technical books. Images are low resolution and mathematical formulas are frequently displayed incorrectly. I only buy tech books now if I can get them in unlocked PDF format. I import those into iBooks and the results are very good.
mastry··on Microsoft Considers Adding Python as an Official Scripting Language to Excel
>> from outside the application. > And that's the thing holding back adoption, I bet.

That, plus the painfully verbose and unintuitive COM API. If they add a Python layer to Excel I would really like to see COM replaced with a simpler (pythonic?) interface.

mastry··on Dozens of Companies Are Using Facebook to Exclude Older Workers From Job Ads
The article mentions this scenario. It points out that anyone can purchase a copy of Teen Vogue (for example) but there's nothing you can do about ads that Facebook won't show you.
mastry··on Show HN: Simple Deep Learning Tutorials using Microsoft Cognitive Toolkit
That installation tutorial is a far, far cry from installing Anaconda then running "conda install tensorflow-gpu". Microsoft has a simpler python-only installation process [1], but when I tried a Linux installation I encountered the same errors that other people are seeing [2]. I expected a Microsoft product at version 2.2 would have more polish than this. Hopefully they will improve the installation process soon.

mastry··on PowerShell is open sourced and is available on Linux
To be honest, I prefer PS to the Azure CLI but I have had to resort to the CLI on a couple of occasions. If I remember correctly it was to reset credentials on a VM (which wasn't possible with PS at the time). I guess the main problem with the CLI is that it's not a shell or a general purpose programming language.

The Azure REST API requires a ton of deeply nested JSON data structures. Take a look at this [1] sample. I just can't bring myself to work with that every day.

I really need to buckle down and try that python API.

mastry··on PowerShell is open sourced and is available on Linux
I wouldn't go so far as to call it a "horrible abortion" - but it can be painful to use at times. I manage several Azure environments with PowerShell and not a day goes by that I don't wish there was something better. Especially on those days when I have to dig into Azure's JSON templates.

There is an SDK for Python, but I haven't had an opportunity to try it. If anyone has used it I would love to hear about your experience.

mastry··on Why Continuing to Work Is Good for a Man’s Health
That research has been called into question [0]. In my opinion it's like anything else...there is no absolute answer. Some people will be happier with more money. Some won't.

mastry··on Typography of “Alien” (2014)
Another game that leans heavily on the typography and general atmosphere of Alien is Duskers[0]. Most of the reviews I read before playing the game made direct comparisons to the movie.
