martin1b··on Teen monitoring apps don't work, and drive a wedge between teens and parents
Explain to me why they are harmed by not seeing people having sex?

Also, explain to me what benefit do they gain by seeing people having sex?

martin1b··on Teen monitoring apps don't work, and drive a wedge between teens and parents
Speaking as a father of a large family ranging from 1 year to 14 years, to understand the child and their weaknesses and exposing them to the child at the appropriate time is paramount.

When a toddler looks in the cabinet for toys and finds poison, we find that as an issue. So, we put the poison up, and/or install a lock. The same goes for the dangers of teens. They aren't ready for some things of internet, including porn and cyber bulling. As parents, we use parental controls to limit access to xrated channels on our tv. It makes sense to limit content to internet connected devices that do the same. We don't need a formalized study to see what access to porn can do to a person. It's been documented many times.

My experience has been, at this point in a childs life, you need to have, or establish a good relationship with your child and help them understand that you are protecting them from harm that they don't fully understand yet. They need to understand this protection is a joint effort between you and them for their best interest.

Some may say this is overprotected parenting. Let's not go overboard here. I've seen so many uninvolved parents, which is far worse than overprotected. I've found the middle ground is the most effective. Add controls to obvious problem sites and apps. Watch remotely from time to time (as sathackr said, trust but verify). Then, periodically, sit down with your child to see how they are doing and how you can help do the right thing online.

I've been with SO since the very early days when Joel and Jeff were very involved. In the first few years, I visited daily because it was like a community of developers working together to help each other in a professional yet cheerful fashion. Now that Joel and Jeff aren't as involved (if at all), its like the focus of the site has changed. As many have said, moderators appear too stringent. So much to the point of removing value from the site. Removing value removes users. I now rarely visit SO because it doesn't feel like a group of developers wanting to help it's community. Asking a question has almost become a provocation of hostility from either moderators or 'answerers'. There are many controls to limit the asker. Perhaps controls should be put in place to limit negative answerer sentiment or moderator dominance or SO could lose it's place in the developer community.

Your comment is full of misunderstanding and sprinkled with hate. How can you say 'utterly corrupt institution'? Yes there are corrupt individuals, and perhaps, even corrupt sects. However, EVERY organization the massive size of the RCC has this and it is caused by the human fault, NOT the church itself (read about Peter). You most definitely will not see it's end in your lifetime as the RCC has lasted 2000 years and will last much longer. 'Halt progress and stay firmly stuck in the past'.. How can you say this? Do you have ANY experience or facts? As a Catholic, I can tell you the church is CONSTANTLY looking to appeal to modern society. However, it does this in an articulated fashion. Just because society has taken a stance on given topics doesn't mean those stances are good for mankind. This is why the church leadership reviews stances in full detail. To move past the hype and determine true effect on the person affected. That is the goal of the church. To help each person achieve TRUE happiness and peace. Yes, most of the RCC members are imperfect. Myself included. However, all of us in the RCC are striving to be better people and to help others do the same.

They used to in the Jobs era. Haven't seen anything jaw dropping since then. Mostly new colors, difference sizes and minor UI improvements.. Swift is cool, but it doesn't increase sales.

AR/VR is interesting but won't take off until the hardware lowers in price..significantly.

martin1b··on Ask HN: Why am I so unhappy in spite of material success?
This is good advice. Also, appreciate what you've been given and give to those less fortunate. Working at a soup kitchen, or somewhere where you can come in contact with those less fortunate will help you appreciate what you have. Akulbe mentioned kids. I can't upvote that enough. They really help you become selfless and see the beauty of life.

martin1b··on Ask HN: Shitty job but well paid
You have a classic case of the golden handcuffs. Been there couple of times. You have a couple options:

1. Ride it out and make it a better place. Be the person who improves Con #2. Usually, it takes a lot of time but it can be done by slowing making improvements toward a new stack. That will phase out Con #3. Help define Con #6 so you have some vision. Con #6 is caused by Con #1. Develop your resume with side projects OR using new stack at work (new stack in production code is worth much more in an interview)

2. Look at another job. You're right when you say other places are the same, but not all. If you find yourself preferring to be sick than to go to work, then it's hi time to change (been there) as you're not doing yourself or the employer any favors. You may need a change of scenery and the money is not worth it at that point. If necessary, take a money hit and move on.

A lot of it boils down to either money (which will come in time), or enjoying your job. If you're lucky, you can get both.

martin1b··on Facebook staff reject female engineers’ code more often, former employee claims
Exactly. Maybe the code needed to be rejected. Many developers have no problem pointing out issues in code. Anyone's code. You can see it daily on stackoverflow. Just because it happens to be a female from time to time makes it newsworthy.
martin1b··on Elon Musk: Humans must merge with machines or become irrelevant in AI age
While this makes a great story, in reality, technology evolves much slower than it is conceived.

I understand we've made progress. However, direct neural integration is very difficult. I would understand bio-integration for very good limb prosthetics in 20 years, better than we have today. Perhaps even indistinguishable from the real thing to the wearer. However, integration directly into the brain without detrimental psychological effects is going to be very difficult.

20 years is a very short time.

I bought a model 3 a few months ago from a guy cleaning out his basement. Love it. TRS80s were a fantastic computers. Reminds me of walking into RS playing with the display computers, wishing I could take them home.

Was hoping to see a Dungeons of Daggorath game cartridge.

martin1b··on Apple is now run by a guy who is more like John Sculley than Steve Jobs
What OSX thing? It's been out forever. And, to intel? That's simply platform support. Not, innovation.
martin1b··on Apple is now run by a guy who is more like John Sculley than Steve Jobs
Name a decent release since 2011 that is innovative.
martin1b··on Apple is now run by a guy who is more like John Sculley than Steve Jobs
To stay big, you need to innovate. The releases since Steve's death have been disappointing. Minor changes to existing products. Ok. The apple watch. But really?

Swift may be one of the biggest releases in recent years. However, since it doesn't affect the public, is considered a non-release.

martin1b··on Yahoo is for sale; bidders line up; Marissa Mayer is toast
Can't stand the cheap shots from reports about others, mostly what they would consider easy targets.

Really, what has this reporter contributed to society? Digging up trash on someone or making some up. Great job.

Mayer, tasked with the difficult job of trying to resurrect a company well into it's decline. Probably had to make a lot of very difficult decisions along the way. And this reporter decides to take a public cheap shot when he has never in his life had the weight on his shoulders Mayer has. Not to mention constant press attacks against her person. Getting tired of press slander.

Classy.

martin1b··on Abandoned South Dakota Town on Sale for $250k
6 acres? A town? Well that's just ridiculous. Just to convey the size, that picture covers well over 6 acres. The white buildings would be the far edge. Not to mention you would need to haul the trashy buildings off to do anything with it. Must be a slow news day..

martin1b··on Jeff Atwood: Learning to code is overrated
Whew. Title made me disagree. Then I read "There’s nothing wrong with basic exposure to computer science. But it should not come at the expense of fundamental skills such as reading, writing and mathematics" and "We shouldn’t be teaching kids “computer science.” Instead, we should provide them plenty of structured opportunities to play with hardware and software. "

Agreed. Coding is a means to an end. Although I must say, 'coding' in Scratch is very helpful for my kids to better understand logic flow in their minds and think in a structured manner. It's means to an end of building something. At the end of the day, I still want them to get outside and experience the world rather that sitting in front of a computer all day. Moderation is key here.
