martin1b··on OpenRA
There is an OpenRA mod called Combined Arms. It is incredible! Been a C&C fan from the beginning, but prefer the originals. Combined arms gives me the feel of the originals with the features of the latter versions. The AI can really be brutal if you suck like me, unless you turn it down.

Lots of fun.

martin1b··on HyperCard Simulator
If memory serves, devs were pretty upset when Jobs killed it. Think there is even a video on YT where one dev gives Jobs a mouthful. Using it, I can see why. It was an internet precursor.
martin1b··on Airbus debuts its half-plane, half-helicopter to the public
"it can disengage it's rotor systems and ignite these 2 additional turbines. 3.2 seconds after liftoff, Airwolf and exceed mach 1 from sea level to 65000 ft"
martin1b··on Biden will not be charged over top secret documents
This is hypocritical. Charge one man with a felony, raid his home, put his face all over TV...THEN.. don't charge another with the same thing because he's just an "elderly man with a poor memory".
martin1b··on A battery has replaced Hawaii's last coal plant
So, they shut down a coal plant to rely on...another coal plant for power generation. How exactly did it 'replace' the last coal plant?
martin1b··on Ask HN: What 1980s/90s-era shareware did you purchase?
Had cool sounds too.
martin1b··on Ask HN: What 1980s/90s-era shareware did you purchase?
OMG, completely forgot about ARJ!
martin1b··on Ask HN: What 1980s/90s-era shareware did you purchase?
Liked Telemate also. Pretty sure it had the ability to script a session. You could create a script and set it to dial in when nobody was on the board, download a file and log off, saving precious time on the board, and the busy signal.

Also liked Telix. Was more simple and like Procomm, but Telemate seemed more extensible.

martin1b··on BBS: The Documentary (2005)
BBSs were much more personal and local than the internet. I remember going to local board (BBS) parties where you met the face behind the avatar. Online games, chatting with sysops, downloading filez... Those were the days.
martin1b··on Google Chrome will limit ad blockers starting June 2024
Hope not. I like Brave
martin1b··on X Is the Biggest Source of Fake News and Disinformation, EU Warns
Or CNN or MSNBC
martin1b··on Razor 1911
Then Neverlock came around. Was incredible.

Still remember the small loader files that ran before the game started - 'cracked by ... (INC, Razor, Fairlight, whoever). Those were cool.

Loved demos back in the day. Second Reality is still one of my favorites.

martin1b··on VSCode Removes Twitter Integration
Haven't experienced that once. Always seems fine to me.
martin1b··on VSCode Removes Twitter Integration
Well that was completely political...
martin1b··on Logo of the X Window System ca. 1990?
When I saw it, thought the exact same thing.
martin1b··on LaserDiscs Are Dying (2018)
Have a pile of inherited laserdiscs. not sure what to do with em.. Anyone want to trade vintage computers for a bunch of laserdiscs?
martin1b··on Ron DeSantis’s 2024 kickoff on Twitter is plagued by technical issues
What?
martin1b··on Elon Musk Calls Remote Work ‘Bullshit’ and ‘Morally Wrong’
I would agree with him to a point. Productivity on full remote workers can be difficult to track and is likely not higher than in office. When I worked from home full time, it was more difficult to maintain productivity as much as while in office. Also, the psychological benefits of in office work definitely come into play here. I believe a hybrid approach is the best and has many benefits (which I won't go into for brevity)
martin1b··on Tucker Carlson bringing show to Twitter
There are so many "facts that aren't so" here, I'm not even going to attempt..
martin1b··on Ask HN: Where to Find Motivation?
Depends on your personality. Some excel with remote, some prefer hybrid or in office 100%. I would agree that if you have the option to come in, try it and see if that resolves the issue. I work hybrid and, oddly enough, am happy when I'm in the office. It also makes we enjoy when I work from home more.
martin1b··on IBM AS/400: Databases all the way down (2019) [video]
Love this!
martin1b··on IBM AS/400: Databases all the way down (2019) [video]
yeah, it's pretty nasty. Free looks pretty java-centric. What's weird is you can in-line RPG. Makes for some crazy looking code.
martin1b··on IBM AS/400: Databases all the way down (2019) [video]
The hardware is solid. The development community is aging out.

We have the same thing and are currently migrating off as there are no RPG developers available for hire. Most of them are retiring. There are very few schools teaching RPG 3, 4, and Free.

martin1b··on Dave Cutler
Always thought DC was a bada$$. He worked on NT, Azure, and Xbox. Would love to meet him.
martin1b··on Transistor Made of Wood
Very nice. Looks to be more of a FET.
martin1b··on Musk changes CBC’s label to ‘69% government funded’ after CBC Twitter pause
True. Very true.
martin1b··on Elon Musk Sells Tucker Carlson His Conservative Vision of Progress
I prefer the actual interview. Very intriguing and entertaining to watch. Not really interested in Politico's left spin on it.
martin1b··on Scratch is the world’s largest coding community for children
My kids love scratch. Excellent introduction to coding for kids. Wish it was taught in schools more as it helps build methodical cognitive thinking. I consider it modern BASIC.
martin1b··on ChatGPT Will Replace Programmers Within 10 Years
Agreed. History shows progress is always much slower than predicted.
martin1b··on SpaceX Employees Say They Were Fired for Speaking Up About Elon Musk
