mannicken··on Your taste is why your work disappoints you.
My work always disappoints me because there's the idealistic image in my head and I could never get it right on paper, no matter how hard I try just like I could never draw a perfect circle.
mannicken··on Reddit has now been down for 30+ hours
Let's hope it never gets to that point :o
mannicken··on Ask HN: Quitting in the middle of the project?
1. Yes. I said that I have nothing to do there, I don't see the point of coming just to hangout. The reply was that they'll find something for me to do. The manager took it as their fault, as if if they're unable to find work for everyone until they collapse on the couch they're not doing their job.

2. No. I hate it.

3. I don't mind being fired. If I work 40hrs/wk I'll keep getting terrorized with voicemails and text messages in the evening and on weekend. It sucks.

4. I signed up for a bunch of art classes at colleges in the evening, but quitting will allow me to expand that into day as well.

mannicken··on Ask HN: Quitting in the middle of the project?
No debt, lease expires soon, savings for ~3 months.
mannicken··on [dead]
Life is overrated. Honestly. This isn't the most popular view but it has to be said. We, as human race, seriously think we are the cream of the world but we are deluded in that thinking.

We are capable of torturing each other, and killing each other, while guided by our own desires only.

"Oh, gee, will me raping that kid put him in a 23-year old dark room that'll end with his suicide? Too bad, I'm special, I can't stop, I won't stop, I don't care! Fuck you!"

And look, you, all the people against suicide, are you any better?

"Hey, dude, I know you're probably enduring torture since you think death is better than what you are going through but, if you kill yourself, you'll be an asshole since you provide so much entertainment for the rest of us. "

Honestly, human race doesn't deserve any respect (yet).

mannicken··on The Levels of Emacs Proficiency
At the height of my Emacs usage, I was chatting with people on Jabber from it, while having a project structure open with RoR plugins, with a couple of shells open.

Oh, btw "C-u C-x shell" allows you to open several shells. Really useful sometimes :)

mannicken··on How a 19-Year-Old Raised $5 Million to Revolutionize Search
It's a status thing. Same reason why people buy expensive cars.
mannicken··on Survey Reveals Why High School Students Drop Out
I dropped out of high school partially because my bouts of depressive laziness contrasted with manic hyperactivity aren't well-stacked against the constant intense effort that the educational system requires. You could literally see quarters of steady grades (sometimes 4.0s) followed by quarters with a bunch of Fs in them.

I was taking community college classes instead of 11/12th grade so it wasn't a big "OH I'M DROPPING OUT" thing for me, I just didn't turn in some portfolio because I was working on a different project and honestly didn't give a shit about some piece of paper. Perhaps some part of me just wanted to fuck with the system and prove how useless the pieces of paper are when compared with the ability to create cool shit.

Yes, I would say the my inner rebellious nature wouldn't allow me to have any formal education. I am one lab class away from an associate's degree and taking anything but lab classes in community college :)

I am only 19 so I really do not know whether I am on a path to drug-addled self-destruction (as a typical high school dropout) or something else.

mannicken··on Jerry Seinfeld's Productivity Secret
The general time period for building up an addiction, breaking an addiction, or a habit is three days. After you've done something daily for three days, you are more likely to continue doing it.
mannicken··on Acetaminophen and the War on Drugs (2009)
Not just opiates, cough syrup (with dextromethorphan) too. It's very dangerous for kids who heard of Robotripping but haven't had resources/time to learn that while DXM overdose will make you trip, acetaminophen overdose will slowly and painfully kill you.
mannicken··on Office comparison: 37signals vs Zappos
37signals office is similar to left-brain: ordered, clean, and structured.

Zappos office is right-brain oriented: a bunch of spontaneous stuff everywhere.

What this actually means is that Zappos overload and "shutdown" right brain, making left brain talk to people (verbal communication is the left brain's job).

37signals overload the left brain, making right brain hack software and come up with out-of-the-box solutions to problems.

mannicken··on How My School and District Failed its Students
So how is this different from jail? You're forced to be somewhere you hate, unable to go outside, for a part of your life just because you were born?
mannicken··on Are you a charlatan, martyr, or hustler? A geometrical illustration
I think it's interesting that the author saw charlatan as a male ("His structure.."), martyr as a female ("her time..."), and left hustler's gender unspecified ("his or her").
mannicken··on Poll: How old are you?
It should look this perhaps:

0 - 8

8 - 16

16 - 32

32 - 64

64 - 128

mannicken··on World's worst hacker
Alias "ls -l" to "ll" in your .bash file, it helps :)
mannicken··on Your code should be as boring as possible
Naive and erroneous input. Boring code. Interesting output. Yep.
mannicken··on Math behind Dope Wars drug trading for profit
There are some inaccuracies when it comes to the relative drug prices. They got the general picture right (coke most expensive, heroin in between, weed on the bottom) but some price comparisons are a bit inaccurate (shrooms < weed).
mannicken··on Point a laser at a police helicopter, go to prison
I say he got off easy. It's a bad idea to fuck with the police, generally.
mannicken··on Xkcd: Good Code
There is no such thing as good code (yet). Any code is a compromise between idealistic, natural language and realistic, machine language. Between fantasy and matter.
mannicken··on The No. 1 Habit of Highly Creative People
I find that when I'm focused on something, I tend to completely ignore outside world, that thing doesn't really exist -- I'm completely inside code/sketch/whatever. Appreciation from the outside world is something I couldn't really care less about, as the fantasy becomes reality.

I think that a healthy balance between living in fantasy and real world, as well as perfecting tools for connecting fantasy and reality is the key.

mannicken··on Breaking a WoW addiction
Not only that, the skills gained in games like Quake (eye-hand coordination, reaction time, etc) transfer over to real-life. I think Quake is to WoW as psychedelics are to narcotics.
mannicken··on Working hurts less than procrastinating, we fear the twinge of starting
I found that having certain rituals, like ingestion of certain substances (caffeine for programming, e.g.) or listening to certain music, or visiting certain forums before doing an activity pretty much removed procrastination from my life. With substances, I found (by accident) that placebo works just as well.

Of course, now I have to battle different drug addictions but that's a completely different story :)

mannicken··on Why your child's school bus has no seat belts
That's also why there's no need to put on a seatbelt when you're sitting in the back of a car. I rarely do.
mannicken··on On Depression & Getting Help
Not necessarily. Depression paralyzes you, leaves you too scared to leave the house or do anything.

"Stars" are more likely to be hypomanic. Or just people who like writing or composing music too much :) People like to blame success on mental disease or drugs because it helps them justify their laziness. Also, attempt to claim that Jimi Hendrix or Kurt Kobain wrote their music because they had a self-inferiority complex might be caused by the self-inferiority complex and envy :P

mannicken··on Ask HN: Can some code be considered art?
According to Tolstoy, anything, which transfers emotions of the author could be considered art.
mannicken··on Sex, drugs, dopamine and exceeding expectations
To be fair, not all drugs release dopamine but those that are addictive do. In a sense, the salesmen had his customers addicted to an experience of buying from him. In another sense, Apple has the customers addicted to experience of buying and using their technology.
mannicken··on In Quest for a 'Legal High,' Chemists Outfox the Law
I wouldn't call Salvia high a high. It's more like a very intense psychedelic trip, to my knowledge, comparable with DMT and stronger than acid or shrooms. People buying Salvia as a replacement for pot are in for a big surprise :)
mannicken··on In Quest for a 'Legal High,' Chemists Outfox the Law
Outlaw bridges.
mannicken··on Ask HN: Anyone else here struggle with the alcohol?
Not necessarily. It's not gambling, video-games, or pot, alcohol is physically addictive and restructures the brain of an addict, making it (alcohol) a vital substance. Hence cold turkey quitting of alcohol can kill a person. Probably not in OP's case, I'm just saying that it's not as easy.
mannicken··on "The 3D universe in which we appear to live is no more than a hologram."
The universe is a construct of our imagination. Individual consciousnesses are incomplete holograms of the original universe. In fact, it seems to me that interactions between humans (piecing together of the universe) are an effect, not cause of the interactions on a lower level.
