mandliya··on Honda is killing its EVs
Interesting they are actually launching EVs in India: https://bwautoworld.com/article/honda-starts-pan-india-test-...
mandliya··on Ask HN: Going low-level – what to learn next?
CUDA programming (writing CUDA kernels) might be a good direction too.

GPU race is getting really hot and there is a lot of work being done to squeeze every ounce of performance especially for LLM training and inference.

One resource I would recommend is “Programming massively parallel processors” [1]

I am also learning it as my hobby project and uploading my notes here [2]

mandliya··on GPT-3 is the best journal I’ve used
I am curious if you tried something like langchain[1] it would solve the problem of not remembering previous conversations. In one of the examples people have used an entire company notion database on top of GPT-3 to answer questions specifically from that database.

PS: not tried myself.

mandliya··on Kraken shuts down global headquarters because ‘San Francisco is not safe’
TIL the London and Lima syndrome from the second link.
mandliya··on Firefox is the 45th result when searching for “Firefox” on Windows Store
Its top result for me too in US.
mandliya··on Launch HN: RescueTime (YC W08) – Redesigned for wellness, balance, remote work
I have been a premium member for a while and it has helped me so so much. Thank you! However I don't see the new guide feature. Is it yet to launch?
mandliya··on ProtonMail removed “we do not keep any IP logs” from its privacy policy
Very responsibly done! The issue was not that they had to share the logs with law enforcement, the issue was that marketing message was incorrect from them. This is a responsible step.
mandliya··on Larry Page: “I think we should look into acquiring YouTube” (2005)
I know what you mean. I loved Vsauce when it originally came out. I remember getting an “oh! Wow!” reactions with amazing first season when Michael would explain things. Later when it moved, it was all too much fluff and little core material I originally loved. I completely lost touch eventually.
mandliya··on This Is Water (2005)
I listen to this speech every 2 months. I have known a colleague for years now, but he became a good friend because I was able to understand his perspective in a useless conflict. This speech is so powerful, and calls attention to true human virtues which are easily forgotten (empathy, compassion). It is good reminder of how we live our lives as center of our own universe, completely unaware!
mandliya··on To remember everything you learn, surrender to this algorithm (2008)
Dropping related Michael Nielsen’s excellent piece about space repitition here:

mandliya··on Show HN: Alias – Google Alerts for your favorite people
This looks amazing, probably features like discoverability and recommendation of creators is in the list?

If I follow n of these people, this person x would be a good creator to follow? Something like that. I realized I don’t know so many of the creators at all.

mandliya··on Surface air temperature for June 2021
I am not sure what more evidence of global warming the lawmakers need to treat it as global threat and take strong actions.
mandliya··on Music for Programming
I have tried so many music genres and following 2 works for me:

- Film scores (not including the lyrics ones)

- Game music

These I think tries to keep you engaged in the primary action (coding, playing game, or engrossed in movie, reading) without you noticing it too often.

Some repetitive familiar classical music (e.g. Chopin) also does the same to me.

mandliya··on Microbes in cow stomachs can break down plastic
I remember news stories in India of cows dying because of ingesting too much plastic.

mandliya··on Ask HN: How do you stay on top of everything you find interesting on the Web?
The problem often is how to separate wheat from chaff. With literally zillions of online content points, how do you find something is good + valuable to you.

I haven’t solved the problem, but I find Twitter search very very valuable. I use it two ways:

1. Reverse search an article/topic and see how many believable people found it useful.

2. Build Twitter lists for topics and find people who are believable in the field and follow their recommendations.

Of course as I said, it doesn’t solve the problem but keeps me sane.

I find Twitter search an amazing tool.

mandliya··on How Notion pulled itself back from the brink of failure (2019)
I still find notion too slow for some reason although it has improved over the last year for me. Kudos to the guys though. Great story. Notion definitely has growing feature list. Now it has API, backlinking etc.
mandliya··on PyCon US 2021 Recordings are Available
Pycon videos are such a quality content. Best use of time. I always learn so much. Is there a JS equivalent conference which has such content? JS newbie here.
mandliya··on Google removes its head of diversity after 2007 blog post surfaces
14 years is such a long time. I am not the same person I was a year ago. There is no excuse to what he did, but what if he is a different person altogether now.
mandliya··on Human taste buds can tell the difference between normal and 'heavy' water
While growing up in a very dry region in India, I remember people get boring wells drilled in their land to extract ground water (sometimes even 1000 feet deep). This ground water often tastes subtly sweet and I remember drinking that water in summer heat, getting this amazing sweet after taste. In fact people go to neighbors who have "meetha pani" (sweet water) for their daily consumption. Not sure if that was D2O and not H2O.
mandliya··on Bring Your Own Client
I admire the thought here however as author himself pointed out this is an innovation killer in some way. I think then we need to separate what can be shipped with universal BYOC and what can’t. Any new innovation is build up on existing features. Extending it to heterogeneous clients will be neither cost effective nor innovation friendly. I work for MS office and shipping the same feature on online client vs win32 apps takes 1-2 quarter and sometime whole rewrite.
mandliya··on Moderna Covid vaccine candidate almost 95% effective, trials show
The logistic problem will be a major blocker in most of the other parts of the world, for e.g. anywhere in developing world. Even though it might work for US, rest of the world will still have the logistic problem due to the temperature restrictions.
mandliya··on Introduction to Linear Algebra for Applied Machine Learning with Python
For AI/ML, I think https://madewithml.com/ does the job. It has curated open source projects, courses, papers and topics.
mandliya··on Caste discrimination in some of Silicon Valley's richest tech companies
I have been in the US since 2012, never even once in all these years, I experienced or know some one who experienced this.I don’t think well-educated, middle class Indians who represent Indians in Silicon Valley will exhibit this behavior. Like the parent comment, not saying that this didn’t happen to people but it is definitely not a systematic thing.
mandliya··on How To Be An Anti-Casteist
I am quite surprised! I am not saying it doesn’t happen, but I am plain surprised. I have been in US for 8 years and reported to Indians most of the time (I am Indian too), and thought of happening something like this here never occurred to me. I believed like minded, educated Indians who mostly comes from Middle class would never do this.
mandliya··on The Art of Not Thinking
>> A trick I've learned is to lie to yourself. Say you're excited to do it, that you can't wait, and that you enjoy it. Your brain is easily convinced if you're willing to let it be.

I think this is what most of hypnosis or meditation techniques do. They try to bring mind in a more suggestive state and then suggests that you like(or hate) the good(or bad) activity.

I have a friend who was a 6 cigarettes a day guy actually quit smoking after few sessions of hypnotherapy. He said his hypnotherapist suggested in sessions that you hate the smell of the smoke, and he started hating it. I had hard time believing it and I remember researching about it.

mandliya··on Show HN: Obsidian – A knowledge base that works on local Markdown files
+1 for remnote! I really love its research based spaced repetition functionality!
mandliya··on Show HN: Introvert – Generative artwork to keep you off your phone
Sorry if this is a naïve question. Once you have the timer running, are you supposed to keep focus on the art getting generated or you can focus on the work you are doing? (Say reading, in that sense you are focused on the reading and not touching your phone).
mandliya··on ReMarkable’s redesigned e-paper tablet is more powerful and more papery
From remarkable website:

Does the reMarkable adapt to left-handed people? If you're left-handed, don't worry. A few of our colleagues are also left-handed. They want to make sure all lefties have an excellent experience with their reMarkable device. You'll be able to set up your reMarkable to left-handed mode when you first set up your device. We've also made it easy to switch between right-handed and left-handed modes in the main settings.

mandliya··on Ring Doorbell App Packed with Third-Party Trackers
This is a fair point. However isn’t amazon investing very heavily in advertising and supposed to compete Facebook and google. https://www.forbes.com/sites/kirimasters/2019/07/26/whats-dr...
