makira··on Show HN: Running 104GB Qwen3.8-Flash-Next on 48GB Mac with at ~12 tok/s
I used similar prompts before. Now I simply say to "remove historical cruft" and results are good enough. It's the model itself that first used this wording, I found it concise.

I enjoyed the article, and thank you for sharing it. Don't be demotivated by the current AI witch hunt, which I see as a form of tribal signaling that will pass.
makira··on We have proof automation now
This is great! Not sure which high level language you are targetting, but consider Subrust instead of C:

How does LowIRSSA compare to P1pp from boot2 ?

makira··on Are the LLM Wars the Database Wars?
Short article, but it's good food for thought, thanks.

"The engines that ended up everywhere were not the ones being argued about."

LLMs are still quite recent indeed!

Fed into a clear Claude Code max effort session with : "Inspect waldo2.png, and give me the pixel location of a raccoon holding a ham radio.". It sliced the image into small sections and gave:

"Found the raccoon holding a ham radio in waldo2.png (3840×2160).

  - Raccoon center: roughly (460, 1680)
  - Ham radio (walkie-talkie) center: roughly (505, 1650) — antenna tip around (510, 1585)
  - Bounding box (raccoon + radio): approx x: 370–540, y: 1550–1780

It's in the lower-left area of the image, just right of the red-and-white striped souvenir umbrella, wearing a green vest. "
Which is correct!

I see an opportunity for a new AI test!

makira··on I Reversed a Drone and Landed It with My PC
Any reason BetaFlight doesn't appear to have even basic pre-shared key symmetric encryption? Some ciphers aren't that CPU intensive.

makira··on A beginner's guide to constant-time cryptography (2017)
Do any of these attacks matter for single-tenant computers where all network packets are sent on a hardware timer (say, 10 kHz) independent of crypto computing? Doesn't that mitigate any side-channel timing attacks from the start?

makira··on NASA Ogma: generate hard-realtime C runtime monitoring applications
Thanks Ivan, makes sense. With the ongoing work of integrating Rust into Linux, I hope we'll see some of that sought-after stability in its tooling. I appreciate the insight - I also wish more code was written with long term in mind, and by long term, I mean decades, not years.
makira··on NASA Ogma: generate hard-realtime C runtime monitoring applications
What's the status of Rust usage inside NASA? I am currently writing software that, hopefully, will be sent to the Moon one day, and I am considering options as to software technologies.
makira··on The Man Who Was Allergic to Radio Waves
"A review published last year in the journal Bioelectromagnetics found no evidence that hypersensitive individuals had an improved ability to detect EMFs, and the study found evidence of the nocebo effect in those same people."

Every time I see someone claiming to have extremely clear symptoms of EMFs sensitivy, I wonder why they don't do a double-blind test to prove the whole world they can actually detect radio-waves. Should be a trivial test to perform properly, and would clearly help the case of hypersensitive people, so why hasn't it happened yet?

makira··on How Netflix outsmarted everyone else in TV
All my recents searches for old movies were vain. Last Sunday, I wanted to see 'Little Miss Sunshine (2006)', result: not available (in Canada anyway). Unsubscribing has started to cross my mind.

When I subscribed for Netflix, the motivation was a large catalog of old movies, cool stuff from other countries (I remember watching TV series from Iceland that were great), no ads. But the greatest selling point: it was more convenient than pirating.

Now, it's all about pushing Netflix produced content down my throat using whatever trick possible, and pirating is again more convenient (large catalog, no ads) even if less user-friendly.

So yeah, "outsmarted" is really pushing it. I'm not the only one getting bored by the current Netflix direction.

makira··on Microplastics found in 93% of bottled water tested in global study
Full quote: "Mason's team was able to identify specific plastics over 100 microns (0.10 mm) in size but not smaller particles. According to experts contacted by CBC News, there is a chance the Nile Red dye is adhering to another unknown substance other than plastic."

Key point: they're unsure about the smaller particles, but they're sure about the bigger ones. There is microplastics in the samples.

A video is just a succession of images. An image is a video with only one frame. You could use the exact same system that protects videos to protect an image, by making a video with one frame of very long (infinite) duration.

makira··on CheapAir accepts Bitcoin
It's similar to watching only downloaded/purchased content versus watching the TV. Once you're used to having no advertisement, turning the TV on is very awkward with all the publicity.

When using Bitcoin, not having to deal with all the road blocks and fees from banks is quite refreshing. Not having to ask permission to do what you want with your money is great!

makira··on Bitcoin Reaches 1000 USD
There is an easy solution for the MtGox withdrawal problem:

- open a bitstamp account, get it verified

- wait for the price between bitstamp and mtgox to be stable

- convert your mtgox usd to btc

- immediately transfer your btc to bitstamp

- immediately convert your btc back to bitstamp usd

- withdraw the usd

Only issue: hope the price doesn't move too much while it is in BTC.
