makerops··on Poll: How do you feel about working hours?
If the definition of "work hours" means actually doing work, to further a goal, you should bump the poll down to 5-10, 10-20, 30-40
makerops··on Why are smartphones portrait?
Simple answer, I would assume is that it is because you hold a smartphone in your hand (contour etc), and a monitor is on a stand/wall.
makerops··on 62% of 16-24s prefer books as physical products
And technical books have a requirement of being at least 500 pages.
makerops··on Edward Snowden nominated for TIME's person of the year
For sure, I agree.
makerops··on Ask HN: Development involve for secure SaaS product?
If you are semi-new to this stuff, which it seems like you are, stick to pre-baked, well tested libraries, and ORMs.
makerops··on Edward Snowden nominated for TIME's person of the year
This is always an interesting question; I definitely do not think though, that the answer is "without a question".

makerops··on Edward Snowden nominated for TIME's person of the year
Hitler was Time's man of the year at one point; they don't limit it to people who are altruistic.
makerops··on Andrea Rossi has started commercializing ECAT nuclear fusion devices
On the one hand, I just can not believe that someone would be audacious enough to try such a scam, when there is such a relatively huge amount of people with their eyes on this. On the other hand history has shown us that this happens A LOT. Human nature is a funny thing.

makerops··on Ask HN: How to double your money quickly?
That wasn't my claim, as others have already stated. It's really way off base from what I actually did say. FWIW, I do think though, there is a better than 50% chance that in one year from now BTC will be worth less than todays price.
makerops··on Ask HN: How to double your money quickly?
It's funny because "fly to vegas and put it all on red" is probably a better bet than putting it all in bitcoin.
makerops··on Chef, Puppet, Salt, Ansible. What do you use for server setup and deployment?
Tech-wise, they all have pros/cons, but really, this isn't a tech question imo. It is business/organization specific;

how large is your company (human-wise/not servers)? what technology is your org most familiar with? Do you have a budget? Is enterprise support important to your company? are you dealing with any rules/regs (HIPPA, etc)

makerops··on Never Heard of It
This post hit a lot of nails right on the head, for me at least (I even played midfield).
makerops··on Ask HN: Where do you buy logos for your MVP?
The noun project also has some decent art you could convert to a logo.
makerops··on Quant turned whistle blower explains how the market is rigged [video]
http://www.automatedtrader.net/ not sure if it is 1 to 1, but it's pretty decent.
makerops··on The Cheapest Generation
Since when does "not taking loans out for shit you can't afford" equate to cheap?
makerops··on 25 years ago this week, the Morris Worm brought the Internet to its knees
Very True. Smashing the stack for fun and profit? That was the first interaction I had with more advanced techniques anyways. I read it as a soph/freshman in HS (97 or so I think)? Timing seems to be close. That could account for the explosion at least; I don't have any theories on the "dead" period.
makerops··on 25 years ago this week, the Morris Worm brought the Internet to its knees
I have read about LoD/MoD, 8lGm etc..it seemed that low hanging fruit was probably the reasoning right? I mean, there were probably so many systems you could access through stupid bugs, that delving deep into SO wasn't necessary?
makerops··on 25 years ago this week, the Morris Worm brought the Internet to its knees
If you are interested in this type of stuff, this is a good, free book:

makerops··on Show HN: Free video game trading, a year after I launched it
I am not a video game player, but this seems like such an obvious site (and awesome), are there a lot of competitors? I see ads for video game stores, and how they screw you on trade-ins, which this seems to fix.
makerops··on The Logic of “Stupid” Poor People
I am not making that assumption really; people that are able to really provide someone with benefits, whether it is knowledge, capital, power etc, would scoff at, and see right through the 2500$ handbag. My point being, either 1. you think you can access a level of person that will help you out by owning a 2500$ handbag (stupid) or 2. That there is a group of people that will allow you into their social sphere because you own a 2500$ hand bag, in the end people who think like this in that social sphere, will not be able to do anything for you.
makerops··on The Logic of “Stupid” Poor People
Anyone who wants to "belong" to a league of people who would waste 2500$ on a handbag IS stupid. Whether they are poor or not is immaterial. It is also a huge leap to say that being "presentable" is the same as wasting money you do not have on status symbols. They aren't the same thing.
makerops··on Ask HN: Should I drop out of college to go work at a startup?
"This is your last chance to learn, soak things in like a sponge."

I think this is a terrible way to look at college v post-college.

makerops··on Toyota's firmware: Bad design and its consequences
I was always taught that the mechanical override was shifting it out of drive and into neutral.
makerops··on Russia: Hidden chips 'launch spam attacks from irons'
I am sorry, but this is just cool (if in fact, the reporting is accurate).
makerops··on The Navy’s newest warship is powered by Linux
Was curious as to who the ship was named after:

"As the coffin passed each SEAL, they slapped down the gold Trident each had removed from his own uniform and deeply embedded it into the wooden coffin. For nearly 30 minutes the slaps were audible from across the cemetery as nearly every SEAL on the West Coast repeated the act.[8]"

makerops··on Hacker News is a social echo chamber
I tend to agree with the premise of the article, but found this line from a self described "big government" type, funny:

We have always been at war with Eastasia.

makerops··on Ask HN: What are the essential books of knowledge for civilization?
Not a book, but a good addition:

http://opensourceecology.org/gvcs.php

makerops··on Ask HN: Point of Sale system APIs for integration?
eThor.com looks interesting, what POS systems do they integrate with? The market is very fractured (RMS touch, aloha, positouch etc); I used to install them, and at one point flirted with developing an app to integrate (went a different way and used qrcodes :( instead). Each company requires a developer license, and they are expensive, 7-25,000$ each.
makerops··on Ask HN: mturk + Google API at no cost to you
It definitely is an awesome hack, and I will also be dogfooding the site, for growthomatic.com, and a designer t-shirt site that I have, at the least they should make for some interesting blog posts.
makerops··on Ask HN: Is it appropriate to ask a startup how much runway they have left?
For sure, you are risking lower pay/less security for the chance of making it up in equity; as complete as info as you can gather is a must.
