makerofspoons··on Differences in the carbon footprint of different foods (2020)
The problem is the animals eating feed grown with fossil fuel derived fertilizers: https://climate.mit.edu/explainers/fertilizer-and-climate-ch...

Cattle eating grass is one thing- industrial feed lots are another and they're needed to produce beef at the scale humans are eating it.

makerofspoons··on Johnson and Johnson reaches deal for $8.9B talc settlement
This tactic is called a "Texas two-step", and it was used successfully by Georgia-Pacific in another asbestos related situation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_two-step_bankruptcy
makerofspoons··on Exxon Quits Drilling in Brazil After Failing to Find Oil
Meanwhile the U.S. shale boom is showing signs of peaking: https://www.wsj.com/articles/u-s-shale-boom-shows-signs-of-p...

This, combined with the energy crunch in Europe due to the war in Ukraine, may be another strong signal we have less runway to get off of fossil fuel than we thought.

makerofspoons··on Virgin Orbit: Richard Branson's rocket firm files for bankruptcy
When Virgin Orbit was spun off, Virgin Atlantic was still operating a dozen Boeing 747-400s. Perhaps before they were phased out early because of COVID the plan was to retire those to Virgin Orbit or use them for replacement parts?
makerofspoons··on IPCC climate crisis report delivers ‘final warning on 1.5C’
The comparisons between the AR5 and AR6 are alarming. Now, under no emission scenarios other than low and very low which we are not tracking close to, we reach +2C at or just before 2050. Many reading this thread will see 3 degrees by the time they plan to retire. This comes with drought, undernourishment, and mass migration: https://sciencenorway.no/climate-climate-change/deadly-heat-...
makerofspoons··on It’s not aliens. It’ll probably never be aliens. So stop. Please just stop
Our first interstellar probes are unlikely to be able to destroy a fighter jet. They'll likely be similar to and just as fragile as the probes we use in our own solar system: https://breakthroughinitiatives.org/initiative/3
makerofspoons··on Instagram’s co-founders are back with Artifact, a kind of TikTok for text
I don't think there's any love between Zuckerberg and Instagram's founders: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2020-04-07/zuckerber...
makerofspoons··on Ask HN: What is your retirement plan? After retirement, what?
I'm maxing out my 401K match and contributing as much as I can to my IRA. My target date funds are still for retiring at 65 but I would be surprised if by 2060 the age to qualify for Medicare and social security haven't been moved back to 70-ish in the USA. I'm a homeowner but in a state that will likely see water shortages and increased wildfires so I have a longish-term plan to get out before I lose my investment.

My plan is to make sure I retire somewhere in this country there is fresh water and hopefully some protection from food shortages. Probably near the Great Lakes.

makerofspoons··on Electrify America “fries” EVs at charging stations
While less common out west, Shell bought Greenlots which operates a network of DC charging stations in the northeast: https://greenlots.com/shell-fleet-solutions/
makerofspoons··on Wyoming senators want to phase out sales of EVs
Around this time last year there were only 460 EVs registered in Wyoming: https://www.wyomingnews.com/rawlinstimes/news/charging-forwa...

Most EVs in the state are visitors and the highways are going to be electrified anyway. This is going to do nothing to save the oil and gas industry.

makerofspoons··on Eggs are 60% more expensive than last year in the US
I've been using flaxseed and tapioca flour egg replacers for years- they're easy to use and cheap. They're also great if you're looking to reduce cholesterol. This could be a time to shine for egg replacement products like JUST Egg, however it is quite simple to make your own at home.
makerofspoons··on Ask HN: What tech utopia/horror ideas do you see materialising soon?
Geoengineering! But whether or not it is a "utopia" or "horror" idea will depend on whether or not it works.

A startup announced just over a week ago that they're already performing solar geoengineering with sulfur particles: https://www.technologyreview.com/2022/12/24/1066041/a-startu...

The US has started a 5 year program to research climate interventions. I expect as it becomes clear we're going to miss the 1.5 degree Paris goal funding will explode in this area: https://www.economist.com/interactive/briefing/2022/11/05/th...

makerofspoons··on Lula Is Elected President of Brazil
Definitely the better choice to preserve the Amazon- hopefully the international community takes this opportunity to pursue programs to pay Brazil to conserve it before the next Bolsonaro.
makerofspoons··on Climate Endgame: Exploring catastrophic climate change scenarios

makerofspoons··on UN says “No credible pathway” and “woefully inadequate” to stop global 1.5C
An assessment of climate tipping points that are likely to be triggered at 1.5C degrees of warming: https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.abn7950

The main threats would be near-term coral reef die-offs and ice sheet collapses.

makerofspoons··on California legalizes digital license plates for all vehicles
I can sort of see the value of Reviver plates for fleets, but their consumer product seems very expensive for what you get. I can already in Colorado (where they are also legal) renew my registration on my phone. The existing app for many modern cars can tell you where the vehicle is. That leaves the personalization aspect for $20/month. Plus, if you opt for the battery model you now have the added inconvenience of needing to remember to charge your license plate. I just don't get it.
makerofspoons··on That snapper might be 80 years old
Yes, unfortunately: More than 75 percent decline over 27 years in total flying insect biomass in protected areas: https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal...

48% of bird species in decline: https://news.cornell.edu/stories/2022/05/global-bird-populat...

among other examples. In 2018 it was estimated by the WWF that 60% of the animal population was lost between 1970 and 2014: https://www.wwf.org.uk/updates/living-planet-report-2018

Very sad to see them go. As a kid I always wanted to fly something on their (long since discontinued) $100 cansat program: https://spaceref.com/press-release/new-service-offers-payloa...

Just one example of how they wanted to do things differently.

makerofspoons··on Thousands of Xcel customers locked out of thermostats during 'energy emergency'
That's good to know! I wasn't home for yesterday's event so I went off the article. I'm not actually sure what it bumped my thermostat to then.
makerofspoons··on Thousands of Xcel customers locked out of thermostats during 'energy emergency'
It's hard to feel too bad for them since it's a voluntary program. I'm part of it and I didn't feel deceived. 78 is hardly uncomfortable.
makerofspoons··on Global food insecurity due to climate disruption from nuclear war soot injection
Owen B. Toon is famously one of the T's in the groundbreaking TTAPS paper. It's credited with bringing the idea of nuclear winter into the public consciousness, alongside co-author Carl Sagan's article in Parade which made the topic more accessible.

makerofspoons··on A Soviet scientist dreamed of melting the Arctic with a 55 mile dam (2013)
No but it looks cool. Project Gasbuggy and similar projects as well as their impacts are just part of the local folklore where I'm from.
makerofspoons··on A Soviet scientist dreamed of melting the Arctic with a 55 mile dam (2013)
Several bombs were used to attempt to extract natural gas under Project Plowshare. Lots of gas was made extractable but due to contamination it was unsuitable for cooking or heating buildings. You can hike or drive to the detonation sites: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Rulison
makerofspoons··on Thousands of classic Polish films, etc. made available for free online
It's here: https://35mm.online/en/vod/feature-films/blind-chance

Unfortunately, it does not appear to have English subtitles on this site according to the icons (I cannot create an account to check at the moment). It does look like you can rent the film with subtitles quite cheaply from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Blind-Chance-English-Subtitled-Bogusl...

makerofspoons··on Thousands of classic Polish films, etc. made available for free online
I recommend "Blind Chance". It follows three storylines about a man trying to catch a train where different events cause his life to unfold differently. It really makes you think about all the small events that have occurred in your life that snowball to make you who you are.
