ma2rten··on Facebook Pay
But that is irrational. Selling data is worst possible thing a company can do, because anyone can buy the data including Facebook.
ma2rten··on Facebook Pay
Facebook doesn't sell your information outright, Credit Card companies do.
ma2rten··on I Quit Shopify After Five Months
Sounds like it's ripe for (creating the perception of) discrimination.
ma2rten··on AlphaCode as a dog speaking mediocre English
It's because you have to pay really close attention to tell if it's real or hype. It's really easy to make a cool demo in machine learning, cherrypick outputs, etc.
ma2rten··on Apple's privacy push cost Meta $10B
Why are you assuming that the parent commenter is in the US?
ma2rten··on iPhone flaw exploited by second Israeli spy firm
Google certainly does a lot of security in house.
ma2rten··on Meta shares drop 20% on Q4 earnings miss, weak outlook
When I was working at a smaller social network, we saw huge spikes during holidays when people didn't have anything else to do. I would imagine new years eve is also huge for facebook, when everyone wishes each other happy new year.
ma2rten··on Meta shares drop 20% on Q4 earnings miss, weak outlook
I saw this claim elsewhere in this thread as well, but I didn't really get it. Google is going be affected equally by iOS changes. Google does control the Android/Chrome ecosystem, but I don't see how Google could make any changes there that hurt Facebook because of antitrust concerns.
ma2rten··on Facebook loses users for the first time
You can also screenshot and print a post on facebook. It's probably cheaper than buying a newspaper.
ma2rten··on Cruise is opening driverless cars to the public in San Francisco
Tesla has not fallen behind, it's rapidly catching up. It's just not that easy to catch up if you are 10 years behind the competition and handicap yourself with inferior hardware. Maybe you are right and Karpathy will get fired, but at that point it's time to sell your tesla stock.
ma2rten··on Tech debt gets worse before it gets better
It actually seems like a good sign to me that they completed their current project before jumping ship.
ma2rten··on Tech debt gets worse before it gets better
It sounds like that company was just dysfunctional.
ma2rten··on Phone is still the best way to order pizza
Believe me, they save more on call center bills than you did on food bills.
ma2rten··on Nature Neuroscience offers open access publishing for $11k per article
In Machine Learning the top journal JMLR is also completely free and open access. Nature tried to introduce a machine learning journal but it is being boycotted by many researchers.
ma2rten··on Bolt founder on Stripe/YC
It looks to be more like a heartfelt rant than a PR stunt, the person who posted this to HN doesn't seem to be same as the one who wrote the tweet.

But it does amaze me how often HN seems to fall for this kind of sensationalist story.

ma2rten··on Introducing the new star-history.com – the missing GitHub star history graph
I'm not sure what your point is. Stars are decent indictor when comparing two projects in the same category.
ma2rten··on Do svidaniya, Igor, and thank you for Nginx
How did you find Fernando?
ma2rten··on Upwork asking me for a $12.5k refund as the client was using someone else’s card
If the author is in the same country as the client then they should also be taking legal action to reclaim the money

But they still seem to be on good terms with the client. If I understand correctly the problem is that they insist on getting paid through upwork:

"When things were not making sense, I still followed the rules. I could’ve easily gotten paid from Robin outside of Upwork. Heck, he was physically in front of me. "

ma2rten··on Lawsuit filed alleging Google is paying Apple to stay out of the search business
Also, why is this crane school spending the money to hire 9 lawyers to work on this lawsuit?
ma2rten··on An iframe from googlesyndication.com tries to access the camera and microphone
That would be anti-competitive by Google. These are different ad networks, not advertisers. Ad networks need to be able to do their own attribution and click spam detection.
ma2rten··on uBlacklist: Blocks specific sites from appearing in Google search results
I think it was a stop gap solution because Google was overrun with spam sites, like Expert Village, before Google did the Panda update.

ma2rten··on Intel seems awfully scared of Graviton2. Why pay for this ad on Google?
I'm pretty sure TPUs are not based on ARM.
ma2rten··on Bumble claims IP rights on employee's open-source libs
This reminded me of this comment: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25281438
ma2rten··on Ask HN: Why doesn't anyone create a search engine comparable to 2005 Google?
More often than not I have an idea which site a result might be on when I issue a query:

If I search for a news event it's a news site.

If I search an error message, I know the result is going to likely be stackoverflow, github issues or the forum of the library.

etc.

I don't think this strategy will get you all the way there, but it could be combined with other ways of curating sites to crawl.

ma2rten··on Ask HN: Why doesn't anyone create a search engine comparable to 2005 Google?
That works once your search engine is more widely used, but not a lot of sites are going to register with a niche search engines. Many users on the other hand really want a search engine like this and would be willing to invest some time.
ma2rten··on Ask HN: Why doesn't anyone create a search engine comparable to 2005 Google?
It's much more expensive now to build a large index (50B+ pages)

Do you have a cost estimate? Also could you be more selective in indexing, e.g. by having users requests sites to be crawled.

ma2rten··on US labor board official orders Amazon to redo union vote at Alabama warehouse
Even in SV someone working at an Amazon warehouse is not making more than that.
ma2rten··on Google Chromium, sans integration with Google
According to https://zworkstations.com/products/z840/ it would be around 8k.
ma2rten··on Facebook ads told me to become a certified cryptozoologist, so I did
Have you considered the possibility that facebook might just not be that good at targeting?
ma2rten··on Piracy release group EVO ‘blames’ movie industry for its popularity
