m463··on Cf: The Agentic CLI for the Cloudflare API
Cloudflare keeps denying my (human) browsing because of "incompatible browser extensions", and sites require javascript and cookies because of all their nonsense.

Please do not put cloudflare between your site and humans, they are not a trusted gatekeeper.

m463··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
litrpg - I've read lots of these, but can't recommend that many. Even better ones can't hold my interest until the end of the series. Some that weren't that bad: solo leveling (up to book ~6), the wandering inn (~11). I listened to dungeon crawler carl (~8 books) and he who fights with monsters (~8).

scifi - the murderbot diaries, old man's war.

You should try driving a tesla with tesla insurance.

Each drive you make will rate you based on hard braking, aggressive turning, unsafe following, excessive speeding, late night driving, forced autosteer/fsd disengagements, unbuckled driving.

You'd think that driving well would eliminate these, but no.

But they give you a pass if you use tesla fsd. That is their endgame, but it sometimes gets a pass for driving more dangerously than you do. You speed - ding. fsd speeds 3x what you do? 100% score.

lol. do you know the world this is creating? who is making the rules?

m463··on DraftKings is using AI to behaviorally target chronic gamblers
I suspect this is "about you - that you won't choke on"
m463··on Electrification efficiency: The world will need less energy after the transition
the main problem I see is with statements like this:

> Nick Eyre suggests that 100% substitution is non-economic during large demand peaks in winter, so 90% are replaced with heat pumps, and 10% comes from hydrogen.

This is like a typical engineer mistake - solving that last 1% with some unwieldy nonsense that would be best left "unsolved".

hydrogen is a bunch of nonsense. Just use natural gas and/or resistive heat.

I think this is why hybrid cars were created. Because of the range anxiety problem that could be worked around easier ways.

m463··on Building a certificate authority for the whole Internet
Just say no. Cloudflare should not be the gatekeeper for the internet.
m463··on DraftKings is using AI to behaviorally target chronic gamblers
They're built on adtech, which people don't understand.

You have many adtech online dossiers that are basically a virtual you, that can be poked, prodded and studied for interests and behaviors.

for a very minimal look, maybe check out amazon "about you":

m463··on You are no longer invited to dinner
I think people who throw parties are invited to parties.

People who don't throw parties might want to think about this. :)

m463··on Systems that no one will test
> Systems that should clearly be air-gapped aren't

Personally I think refrigerators, microwaves, washing machines, vacuum cleaners, ...

I think at some point people just give up or the (bad) idea gets normalized.

Then at work, they're not surprised when some other system is connected for convenience...

m463··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
I sort of laughed when the california bottling companies are made out to be water-wasting-villains.

Even if there was an extreme drought, putting water in people's bodies via drinking should never be curtailed.

(though maybe stop watering crops with brawndo)

I saw a sign the other day in California:

diesel $8.99

m463··on Alan Kay's answer to “Did the ENIAC have a BIOS”?
So isn't the BIOS sort of an intermediary artifact?

I think when CPM booted, there must have been some hardcoded disk firmware to get the boot sector into memory.

The IBM PC bios was burned into the system.

I think the boot process is multifaceted and can have as many stages.

m463··on Nvidia wants to put a watchdog chip next to every AI agent

m463··on Previously unheard recordings of John Coltrane, captured by Frank Tiberi
It's ok, I resonate more with roscoe p myself.
m463··on Nissan's third generation e-POWER powertrain
The bmw i3 range extender engine only generates 19kw of electricity. It doesn't allow you to "fill up and drive anywhere" like a car. It is more like a bigger battery.

I think the solution is actually what we have now - high-power dc fast chargers spread around the country.

m463··on Nissan's third generation e-POWER powertrain
> I used to like hybrids

I think that is a transition issue with most tech.

Like when film cameras were first transitioning to digital there was a lot of reasons you wouldn't just glom onto digital. Early digital cameras had low resolution (or files were huge), bad dynamic range, either terrible lenses or didn't work well with slr lenses, etc.

I remember when tesla came out with the first EVs the batteries had ridiculous/expensive capacity compared to other EVs (compare 90kwh to a leaf with like a leaf was 24kwh). Hybrids made sense because EV range was either poor or expensive or both. And charger infrastructure was barely getting started.

Now it is different.

m463··on Replacing the old battery on rechargeable bike lights
Ok, so only loosely related - I find new matrix headlamps on cars to be pretty intriguing. Basically they have an array of lights that are focused like pixels, and they can turn off the pixels that would blind others.

Wonder if this kind of stuff can trickle down to bicycles and motorcycles and you only light what's important in front of you. This could be to light more stuff so you can see it, or less stuff and save power while seeing what's important.

m463··on The Evolution of Vending Machines
Someone has to bring up japanese vending machines. They are sort of amazing.

That said, I've seen more weird giant vending machines in airports nowadays, the memorable ones to me selling all kinds of lego sets.

m463··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
I knew two engineers, one in the US, one in europe.

The one in the US worked at a chip company and they had gotten a chip back and it worked without any respin.

The one in europe was working with GPS stuff and with a european chip that was on spin 400+. (it's been a while so I don't have more info, but I think maybe it was government subsidized?)

I couldn't help but think something was seriously wrong with european engineering.

m463··on California is chasing wealth that has feet
> laffer optimal

"optimal" is an annoying term here.

That point is the maximum taxation burden possible, but it shouldn't be a target.

"optimal" might actually be a much smaller number, where prosperity what is maximized.

m463··on Tesla’s optimus hits snags in hands, suppliers as scale-up begins
I thought that site used to be ok but then it became over-the-top negative towards tesla.

examples:

- Tesla Semi finally enters volume production, 7 years behind schedule

- Tesla ‘FSD’ sped in 55% of Brussels 30 km/h zones ahead of EU vote

- Tesla Full Self-Driving bug falsely flags dirty cameras, demands service

- Tesla’s active robotaxi fleet in Austin crashes back to 8 vehicles after Cybercab pump

- Tesla’s record month: 4 fatal Autopilot and Full Self-Driving crashes

I'm sort of reminded of Steve Job's retort:

"By the way, what have you done that's so great? Do you create anything, or just criticize others work and belittle their motivations?"

Nowadays I tend to read this site instead:
