ly··on Visualizing Electricity
In case the author of the video reads this: I tried to watch it but after 2 minutes I just had to turn it off as I couldn’t handle that music anymore. It’s extremely distracting when you try to listen to what the narrator is explaining. It’s not that I don’t like background music in explanatory videos, but this music is way too loud and complex to not distract.

Also, considering the video is uploaded to YouTube, I would remove the moving white “stars” in the background. The model itself is very detailed already, which makes it noisy after running it though YouTube’s compression, but the moving stars cause there to be even less bandwidth available for the visualization itself, resulting in more compression artifacts.

ly··on New 13-inch MacBook Pro
Interesting to see they upgraded the RAM, but still kept it LPDDR3, even though all other Macs have DDR4 (except for the MacBook Air, which as LPDDR4X). At this price point I would honestly expect DDR4 in a "Pro" machine.
ly··on Show HN: A sound-effect chatroom for meeting engagement
Just wanted to let you know there's no sound in Safari as the user has never given permission to play audio. So every time you run `audio.current.play();` it gets rejected with a `NotAllowedError`.
ly··on Bouncing DVD Logo
I have no great answer to your question, and you might know this already, but while translate3d is indeed newer, it’s not a “new more performant” replacement for positioning with top/left using the position property.

It’s just another property which can sometimes be used to do what you could earlier only do with ‘position:’, but there are still many cases (the majority) you position things using the “old” position property.

They have different uses, and for that reason one also requires a reflow while the other does not.

Your comment got me curious about this. The closest thing I could find is an old HN post: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3298905

According to that one ~2/3 of HN visitors are not from the US. It’s old though, and now I’m wondering what the current statistics would look like.

ly··on Light Tracer – Experimental GPU ray tracer for web
That’s because browsers on iOS can’t use their own engine and have to use Safaris. Unfortunately, Safari is not supported.
ly··on Show HN: GitHub Repository Card for Every Web Site
The link to the github repo is located in the code you paste on your own website, so you already host that part yourself. The only thing someone could change if the account is hacked is the contents of the image.
ly··on Apple App Store Principles and Practices
> 84% of apps are free, and developers pay nothing to Apple.

That's just false, every developer has to pay 99 USD per year to be able to publish apps. Even if you only publish free apps.

ly··on jExcel CE: Free jQuery spreadsheet plugin
As this appears to be your own project I just want to give you a heads up that the website is not usable on iOS safari.

The website is not responsive, which is unfortunate but not a dealbreaker, but the problem then is that the website is very wide, but it’s also zoomed in and there is no way to zoom out. The only way to read anything is to keep swiping left and right all over the website. It’s a huge pain to read anything on the website like this.

ly··on Show HN: BlurPage – A browser extension to hide sensitive information on webpage
When the text is blurred you can sometimes still find out what letters were blurred. I think it would be smart to replace any any blurred text with random characters with the same length. Only then can you be sure the sensitive information is actually hidden.
ly··on Traccar – Modern GPS Tracking Platform
On the product page (https://www.autopi.io/hardware-dongle/generation-two) on their own website they give plenty of reasons why you might want to use HDMI, a GPU, sound, GPIO and other Raspberry Pi features.

It also might have been more expensive to design and produce their own PCB with all these features, so if the Pi is cheaper, why not use it?

Also, there are a ton of information, tutorials and libraries available made for the Raspberry Pi. Now their customers can take advantage of all that too.

ly··on Show HN: How privacy-friendly is your site?
I think this means that the tool is not automatically being redirected to https:// when visiting your website at http://, so it's marked as insecure (See point 2. on the website).
ly··on Microsoft is quietly merging Office code into their react-native-macos repo
I don't get what the big deal is about this, am I missing something here? To me it looks like it's just a repo Microsoft forked from react-native.

The repo has only 9 stars and they haven't even changed the README yet. It's not like it's a big open source Microsoft project they're now sinisterly adding Office code to. And even then, the commit title directly mentions Office.

ly··on Dev.to is now open source
I agree, left-pad was a mess, but while the huge amount of dependencies is the thing people most complain about, is it actually unique to Javascript? Looking at the Gemfile for this project, it seems like you're also going to have to install hundreds of gems if you want to get this up and running.
ly··on Dev.to is now open source
Instead of just dismissing all Javascript backends, can you tell me why using Ruby is better than Javascript here?

Personally I do prefer Rails over something like Express too, but that's more of a personal preference. I don't see why todays Javascript backends are all "shit"?

ly··on How is Javascript used within the Spotify desktop application?
I know, I use it on OSX too, so thats why I was wondering why it doesn't work on windows? It seems to be built on the same system.
ly··on How is Javascript used within the Spotify desktop application?
I got a HDPI display for my windows machine a few days ago. What I am wondering now is why Spotify doesn't support this? If it runs on chromium, which does support hdpi displays, why doesn't spotify? I have I have to choose for a really small spotify client or a real blurry one. Reading this, it would not seem to hard to make it work. It works fine on OSX.
ly··on WebGL raytraced eye
Crowd crashed seems like the perfect word for this.
