lunchbreak··on The infrastructure behind ATMs
I was under the impression that selecting debit when paying at the cashier means a direct debit of your account happens (as this article seems to imply). Which isn't subject to laws protecting consumers which apply to credit cards.

However selecting credit by the cashier - while using eg a MasterCard branded debit card still gives you the consumer protections (eg when disputing charges the onus is on the bank etc)

Am I completely wrong about this? Is the only difference the payment rail that gets used - and that has no affect on whick consumer protection laws you fall under?

lunchbreak··on An even worse anti-encryption bill than EARN IT
A Twitter thread [1] from Matthew Green in this bill. Essentially he says that this bill is a dead on arrival bill which is designed to make EARN IT look like a fair compromise.

And we better not fall for it

lunchbreak··on Australia wildfires: 500M animals and plants killed as glaciers turn black
The actual study says 480 million animals affected - not killed. Classic broken telephone - https://thehill.com/policy/energy-environment/476533-univers...

"That's not to say that the 480 million have all died as a consequence of the fires because some things are going to be mobile — birds will fly away and come back," Dickman added.

"Some reptiles, like lizards, would perhaps go underground," he continued.

lunchbreak··on New Dell XPS 13 developer edition now available
>Not only that but the 8th generation developer edition supports Suspend-to-idle natively which allows the system to resume much more quickly from sleep.

What's different about this from before? I have an xps9350 with fedora - and have noticed sometimes buggy suspending (it shuts down instead of suspending) - but it usually got fixed with kernel update

lunchbreak··on Hyperloop startup Arrivo is shutting down as workers are laid off
When the Federal reserve lowered interest rates investors had to look for places to invest their money to make a larger return. Now that rates have risen there is not as much money flowing to VCs because there are safer - albeit less profitable - investments
lunchbreak··on As the U.S. fantasizes, the rest of the world builds new transport system (2017)
Wendover had a good video about China's rail network a while ago. [1]

Major points are:

1. China is willing to build loves that aren't self sustainable - whereas the USA isn't (and the US doesn't factor in the social benefits)

2. China's airspace is mostly military - leading to only small flight corridors and therefore significant delays for flights - making trains more reliable

3. China is willing to make train lines that make no sense beyond connecting areas that are not as friendly to the government to areas that are in the hope of increasing government support in those areas

lunchbreak··on Amazon Targets Unprofitable Items, with a Sharper Focus on the Bottom Line
I've noticed that Walmart is doing the same thing - some items can only be ordered in bulk or in store.

This may lead to a resurgence in visiting stores for people that don't want to order in bulk

lunchbreak··on Why Skylake CPUs Are Sometimes 50% Slower
If I remember correctly, rust doesn't help with deadlocks - you still have to be careful of them. Though it does have primitives to help significantly with race conditions

lunchbreak··on Mussels test positive for opioids in Seattle's Puget Sound
It's also one of the ways for detecting the amount of pee in a pool - if people had a diet Coke before they peed then it can easily be detected. (Urea can be released via sweat I believe - so that's not a good signal)
lunchbreak··on In Twitter’s early days, only one celebrity could tweet at a time
What frameworks would you use to handle such an steep growth curve? Most startups I know of start of with rails or the like - and obviously they couldn't handle the strain. So what would you use?

lunchbreak··on FedEx reserves 20 Tesla Semi all-electric big rig trucks
True points - though I would think for at least FedEx and UPS carry significant amount of light cargo in some trucks (boxes with empty space around the actual contents, and other lighter contents) compared to other trucking groups which carry almost solid cargo (a truck carrying sugar for example). Pepsi specifically is an interesting one - because I assume that most of the cargo space is liquid, though I wonder how much empty space is in their cargo areas due to round bottles
lunchbreak··on FedEx reserves 20 Tesla Semi all-electric big rig trucks
The biggest issue with electric semis is that trucks have a maximum weight limit, and the battery is much heavier than fuel for the same mileage. As much as you may get the same range, if you can't carry as much cargo, you lose the benefits of price per mile.

Note that Tesla didn't mention the weight of the battery when announcing the truck. (Though I assume they believe they can get it even lighter before they release production models)

lunchbreak··on Waymo shows off what it’s like to ride in a truly driverless self-driving car
Well said.

Though possibly a bigger backlash could come when a self driving car kills someone in a situation where there are only 2 bad options to choose from. Being that with a human driver nothing was pre-planned people move on. But with a self driving car where such situations have to be decided in advance the backlash could be much more significant.

lunchbreak··on Triplebyte Raises $10M from Initialized Capital, Marissa Mayer and Paul Graham
Do they have lots of jobs on offer? I passed the quiz and was accepted after the technical interview in late 2017 (I must say the interview was very well done and the feedback was very constructive), but they had 2 matches for me in NYC, of which neither progressed to a company interviewed. I heard of others that had a similar experience.
