luminarious··on Epic Games makes Unreal Engine even cheaper for indies
Sure, it's cheaper and the technology is top notch. But dear god do the tools have a learning curve.

As a dabbling artist who just wants to make something reasonably good-looking, the toolkit looks very intimidating. With Shiva and Unity, the end quality may well be lower, but I'll probably finish the game in the time it would take me to get to know the UDK.

luminarious··on Torrent meta-search engine
Then you're better off using any of the other torrent (meta)searchers. This kind of view is excellent for those without access to any nifty streaming services.
luminarious··on Want to be a leader? Wash the Dishes When Nobody Else Will.
I do believe humility is a seriously underrated trait. You do the thing that needs to be done, no fanfare necessary.
luminarious··on E-ink writing pad, Noteslate.
I doubt the OCR would be 'live'. More likely, it would be used when transferring files back to your computer. As the device doesn't have wifi or any files to rename, there is nothing that would take character input on the device..
luminarious··on Google ’not happy' with Android Market purchase rates, many changes coming
I think I agree with this. It would make perfect sense for the developer to specify the return period. I mean, even a choice between 15min/ 60min/ 24h would probably be enough.
luminarious··on Overcome Fear in 2011. Get Rejected On Purpose
I'm not entirely sure your negative opinion of getting rejected is justified. I feel the direction of the feedback cycle is entirely dependent on the given person's general mindset.

As a positive example, my weak point is talking to girls. I try to talk more to them (or to more of them) to get experience. But since I'm not too sure of myself, I don't come off as pushy or overbearing, so the responses are generally positive, just because of the attention they receive. Which makes me feel more comfortable the next time I try to talk to female strangers.

luminarious··on Microsoft confirms 1.5 million Windows Phone 7 handsets sold since launch
Personally, I find the UI very, very appealing. But will not purchase a WP7 phone until a proper browser becomes available, even Opera Mini will suffice.

On a related note, how come all the mobile JS frameworks neglect Opera?

luminarious··on You must learn JavaScript
Unity game engine supports JavaScript alongside Boo and C# http://unity3d.com/unity/engine/programming
luminarious··on Students: You Are Probably Not Mark Zuckerberg, So Stay In School
If you do the same thing everyone else is doing, you will fail.

If you work really hard, you will perhaps fail to a lesser degree than everybody else.

But the only way to win is to play your own game.

luminarious··on Show HN: Streak.ly tracks what you do daily and I'd love feedback on the concept
It's a productivity method named after Jerry Seinfeld. I first heard about it from this lifehacker post: http://lifehacker.com/281626/jerry-seinfelds-productivity-se...

Basically you decide to do or practice something every day. If you forget or otherwise fail to keep up, you mark it in red on your calendar. Goal is to try to see how long you can go without a red mark. And get things done in the process.

luminarious··on Blurrypeople.com - strangers you might actually like
The system itself makes perfect sense and I actually tried it out, unlike chatroulette.

But the design.. it needs some work. For one thing, the flash webcam popup before I've even read the heading, as has been pointed out, appears much too early. Also have some humble doubts about this kind of dark design attracting many girls.

luminarious··on Ask HN: Fun ways to learn Javascript for a 12 year old beginner?
On the contrary, I feel it's as close to Why's Poignant Guide any Javascript tutorial has got so far. It reads well and the interactive console is really helpful. I'm 2x12 old, admittedly, but for me this was a really good way to learn JS better.
luminarious··on Razor Burn: A Flood of Fancy Shavers Leaves Some Men Feeling Nicked
At 24 years of age, I have had enough time to attempt shaving with different razors again and again. I have hated every minute of it. Wether I have too sensitive skin or I have not given myself enough time desensitize myself, but none of the different gels, creams or even shaving oil combined with various razors have convinced me.

Basically, I gave up about a year ago and use a trimmer to shorten the hair to sub-millimeter length. A permanent stubble, pretty much. My girlfriend doesn't find it a show-stopper, so all is well on that front.

I sometimes wonder in morbid curiosity wether I should try again in order to look more professional, but then shurg it off quickly. I have two more years of architecture school left, so there's no rush.

luminarious··on The Web Way to Learn a Language
I have reason to believe the latter connotation may have been a misunderstanding. As an Estonian, I am quite convinced that "Head ööd" means "Good night" and is in no way connected to wether you are actually going to bed. Unless you add a wink or something.. :)
luminarious··on Ask HN: Good programming language for kids
I vote for REBOL. Syntax is really basic, yet really powerful. Can do graphics, simple animation, connect to the web, can accept web connections and is really small.

Basic applications at http://musiclessonz.com/rebol.html rebol tutorial include a painting app, e-mail sender and a calculator.

Syntax is the real winner. Keywords, "" and [] is basically all. No silly semicolons, curly braces or whatnot.

luminarious··on One Bowl = 2 Servings. F.D.A. May Fix That.
What's with the confusing system? Maybe it's from growing up with it, but here in Europe the system makes a lot more sense: all foods specify the calories/ other food info per 100 grams. This makes it easy to compare different foods. Since the weight of the pack is also given in grams, it's really basic level math to figure out how many calories eating half a pack of something gives.
