lostgame··on I wrote a GameBoy emulator for my hobby OS (2022)
I was thinking, for myself; growing up as a SEGA kid, I'd far rather implement a GG/SMS emulator, heh.

I would say my interest is perked, though! I have a number of projects at the go currently that I think would prevent me from really dedicating all the effort I'd need to a project of that magnitude, but...it's also Z80, yeah? Mainly?

I did mostly Genesis ASM back in my ROM hacking days, which was 68k, with a Z80 sound chip.

I, too; am a huge fan of GBA homebrew dev, in high school; honestly, it was supremely helpful in me mastering the C language, and; even better - it led to my DS development days, which was far, far, more fun.

Dealing with the DS, especially; wow. Two screens, touch input, I gotta say, as a developer it felt like an open canvas; even if I was; like...15 at the time, lol.

It's what led me into iOS development when the App Store was officially announced. (I must've been 18 at that time? 19?) I, again; saw this as a multi-touch open canvas for creating basically anything my mind could imagine, at the time; the extreme restrictions Apple placed on App Development were actually nothing compared to the limitations of e.g. the DS, much less the GBA. (at least the DS had a wi-fi stack, lol...)

Who cares? Rez literally released an honest to God vibrator as a legitimate product, I think for no other reason than to stir up noise.

People will find whatever the hell the want to use to get off, always have, always will.

It really is a shame it didn’t appear Aperture had enough of an audience for Apple to maintain it. :( Very quality piece of software.

You have to fill out values and match them based on the IRS’ existing knowledge?

It’s never made sense to have them separate. :/

lostgame··on Asus Ally Emulates PS3, Nintendo Switch, Xbox 360 with Ease
I think it’s more of the spirit of the thing than it is the law, specifically.

The fact is, I’d imagine a solid 90% of people using Switch emulation are using it for piracy of games that are usually still available on the shelf - or worse, brand new.

As a homebrew developer for, EG; the SEGA Saturn and Atari Jaguar - I absolutely do get that there are a few of us that legitimately use emulators for legal purposes.

I also download ROMs all the time of even mainstream titles that have never seen a re-release. (Here’s looking at you, ‘Knuckles’ Chaotix’ for the SEGA 32X…)

But the issue with Switch emulation is that, yes; I’ve got a few friends who simply downloaded and played all the way through the new Zelda title released just recently via emulation, and it’s just kind of…it’s easier to understand why that isn’t really ‘okay’ to me.

lostgame··on US iPhone market share up, in declining market, as people switch from Android
Makes total and complete sense, and seems absolutely anti-ridiculous.

Group chats also work fine if we’re all using Messenger - group chats work just fine if we are all using Signal - it’s almost as if software works as expected if it’s being used as expected.

Mind blowing, I know.

There is no other major chat platform that offers interoperability with services the platform owner does not own.

(Messenger and Instagram just got some sort of interoperability, but since they are both Meta properties, it only helps prove my point.)

What’s beyond ridiculous is to expect a SEGA Genesis cartridge to just run, unmodified on an SNES, which is what you’re demanding, here.

Yeah, a group game of Super Mario Kart 64 works awesomely on an actual N64 with a real cartridge and four controllers - but hey, why doesn’t it work the same on my PS1?

Well, fuck Nintendo for not opening up their game to other platforms! They have awful business practices!

…

…now that’s ridiculous shit, and what you’re almost literally saying; word for word, just with different hardware and software.

(The PS1 doesn’t even have 4 controller ports out of the box, even if it could run N64 software unmodified. The PS1 also had its own exclusives and benefits, such as Final Fantasy 7. Both platforms had their advantages and disadvantages. The N64 was far more powerful, but was hampered by cartridges, whereas the PS1 used CD media and could store much more, but push far less polygons.)

Why on Earth would it be Nintendo’s responsibility to make sure Kart 64 plays great on a PS1?

Isn’t half the point of a first party software release (either Kart 64 or iMessage) to provide a reason for users/players to choose that platform instead of whichever alternative?

Should GarageBand/Logic or iMovie/Final Cut suddenly be ported to Windows or Linux as well?

At what point does the ridiculous demand for interoperability stop? What do you want, only one monopolistic set of hardware and software for everything?

lostgame··on US iPhone market share up, in declining market, as people switch from Android
Not only that, but I find Android to just be a miserable UI/UX nightmare, and the Play Store to be filled with somehow 9/10 apps being shit instead of the App Store's even 6/10 being shit.

I recently purchased an Android (Galaxy S20) for testing a cross platform app I've been working on and was shocked at how much worse it's gotten over the years.

If you have a choice, and you do - (just buy a used iPhone a couple generations back, I got an iPhone 8 recently for $100 CDN) - I can't fathom why you'd choose Android, especially with Google's telemetry.

The iOS OS itself is incomparably easier and more pleasant to use (even my 120hz Galaxy S20 device has animations that are choppy as all hell) - and that's not even getting to the borderline unbelievable difference in hardware quality.

I paid $250 CDN used for this S20, and $100 for the iPhone 8 I recently snagged. The 6-year-old iPhone 8 runs incomparably better than the 3-year-old S20.

lostgame··on US iPhone market share up, in declining market, as people switch from Android
Well...they do mess up group chats, and images and other basic features usually don't work the best, so...what's wrong with this criticism?

I'm sure Google could figure out how to make it play along nicer (they already implemented reactions, so don’t give me bullshit telling me they can’t improve it more) or - better yet, create a more solid alternative.

That's not really Apple's job. They made a superior piece of software and reasonably want to use it to encourage people to their platform.

You might not like it - but it is allowed.

If you'd like the features Apple offers, you're welcome to move to their platform. :P

No different than if you'd legally like to watch Star Wars at home, you'll need Disney+.

Disney isn't somehow required to also offer it on Netflix. :P It's called a feature of the platform. If you'd like that feature, use that platform.

Your cousin doesn't have D+? Well, I guess y'all aren't chatting about the new episode of 'Andor' that dropped that week.

They don't have an iPhone? Guess y'all have to deal with green bubbles.

That's part of how platforms - necessarily - differentiate themselves from one another to encourage users to them, just like console exclusives.

When I was a kid, if you liked Sonic, you had a SEGA. If you liked Mario, you had a Nintendo.

Nobody in the world in the 90’s was expecting a Sonic game on a Nintendo console or vice versa.

I don’t know what changed that people are suddenly freaking out about this, lol.

It shouldn’t have to be explained in a group as highly intelligent as this one that this is simply basic anti-competitive practice.

If iMessage was everywhere it would be a monopoly and y’all would be clamouring for some alternative anyway. :P

There’s literally just no pleasing some of you, lol.

lostgame··on BBEdit is 30 years old as a commercial product
I caved and purchased a license of Fetch some 3 years ago after shamelessly pirating it for something like 15 years. It's such a fantastically simple piece of software and really filled the void WS_FTP created when I swapped from Windows to Mac.

When it came time recently to start from scratch when I purchased a new (used) MacBook Pro, I finally just caved on the license.

One of those I told myself I'd 'purchase when I had the money eventually' and actually did, heh. Zero regrets.

lostgame··on Apple is bigger than almost any stock market in the world
Love him or hate him; you have to respect the reality that good leadership and vision is what got this company from it’s main competitor bailing it out 25-ish years ago to becoming one of the most valuable tech companies in the world.

I believe a lot of that came from recognizing and adapting to trends, such as when Napster was an huge thing and Apple chased after a legal digital music option.

I think for anyone who was big on tech in the 90’s, Apple’s current position was unthinkable, such as SEGA no longer being in the console market.

My lesbian ‘husband’ who is considerably more masc-presenting than I, loves this.

I’m finally almost sold on the concept of a MacBook Air, now that the performance vs. cost factor is there. I never used to see weight or size as a huge factor in hardware but I sure as hell do now.

I’m transgender, male to female; and going from a sidebag to carrying mainly just a purse has honestly been a blessing and a curse.

I’m aware I could obviously still rock a sidebag as a woman, I just generally don’t; lol, and honestly the smaller format of a purse has its advantages, too.

lostgame··on YouTube tests blocking videos unless you disable ad blockers
Well, my hubby’s iPad and our iPhones don’t support ad blocking on YouTube, nor does my Smart TV, so…ad blocking only works on 1/5 of my husband’s devices and my own would actually be effective with ad blocking, for one…

(And before you say ‘just switch to Android’, I’m an iOS/WatchOS dev and a music producer for a living - if anything with the recent announcement of Logic on the iPad, I’ll be buying another iPads not reducing them…)

lostgame··on The world’s oldest ultramarathon runner is racing against death
My ‘hubby’ just completed her first ever half marathon this weekend at the Toronto Marathon.

Meeting her at the finish line; I clearly in no way had any clue just how intense and borderline insane marathon running really is. She’d been training for about a year, but tbh I hadn’t really seen her do it a lot, since she was usually at the gym, and I guess just the idea of processing that she just did a 22km run, going up and down various hills as well; was honesty mind blowing.

It’s gotta be a labour of love, because holy cow; it seems tough.

lostgame··on Apple brings Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro to iPad
You can share Apple-created iOS/iPadOS app subscriptions with other iCloud Family members. :) I can’t see this being an exception.

My hubby and I use it all the time. :)

lostgame··on Apple brings Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro to iPad
It’s certainly not been a specific use case over 10 or so years, I mean…in any given scenario; small files, big files, any given file type, on any given network configuration, with any combination of MacOS or iPadOS/iOS devices, I feel like I have a higher probability of making a dunk from a 3-pointer line than getting AirDrop to work; and that’s been the general consensus I’ve gotten from any fellow developers I’ve actually discussed it with.

If there was any consistent behaviour I could use to get it to either misfire or actually work; I’d love to have seen it, but every major MacOS revision I give it another try, only to inevitably just facepalm and use a USB key or something like DropBox.

It’s a shame, I honestly think it should be a fairly simple technology to implement and make work well, but it’s clearly just…not.

lostgame··on Apple brings Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro to iPad
To be fair - GarageBand is free, and while it’s feature set is obviously lethargic in comparison to Logic’s, I do like their philosophy of having kind of a free consumer and education version vs. a professional version.

As a teenager I very successfully followed the path of using iMovie and GarageBand for a couple years until eventually I outgrew the feature set and wanted more.

At the time; they sold what was called ‘Final Cut Express’ and ‘Logic Express’, which were essentially 95% feature complete versions of the software at a significantly reduced price aimed at the education and hobbyist market. It was a perfect little balance between affordability and power.

Best of all, you could, and still can; open up iMovie projects in Final Cut and GarageBand projects in Logic - allowing you to actually flex more power if you need it in existing projects.

This workflow was so fantastic, and I actually still use it sometimes when I’ve got musical ideas on the go and want to jot them down quickly with GarageBand on my iOS device.

lostgame··on Apple brings Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro to iPad
It is not. You can open iOS/iPadOS GarageBand files in MacOS, but you cannot open MacOS GarageBand files on iOS/iPadOS.
lostgame··on Apple brings Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro to iPad
Wow. I’ve seriously actually never heard that once in 15+ years of being a Mac developer and using them full time.

I’ve never actually heard anyone, in real life; or offline, recommend, suggest; or even say one single positive thing about AirDrop essentially since its release.

It’s easily the most unreliable piece of software integrated into the MacOS/iOS platform, just a feature that has been so fundamentally broken since it’s introduction that it makes me wonder why it exists at all.

It’s definitely below 50% on the times it actually works as intended - given any network configuration, combinations of Macs or OS versions…nothing really seems to even consistently affect its continual failure.

AirDrop not working, is the expected result of using the software. As of Ventura I’ve not noticed any improvement in the feature’s functionality since it’s introduction.

lostgame··on Apple brings Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro to iPad
AirDrop is - by far and large, especially in the Apple ecosystem - the single most unreliable, almost guaranteed-not-to-work piece of software I’ve used.

It works - for me - with any combination of Macs; old or new, desktop or laptop, on any given network configuration; in any location - about 3 or 4 out of ten times I give it a shot.

It’s honestly baffling to me how Apple has for more than a decade shipped a major feature that works easily less than half the time in my experience and my co-workers. Coworkers and I mostly completely avoid it at this point; and if we do actually give it a try, it feels more like praying to a God for rain than actually trying to use a piece of software.

I really have to wonder what has made it just so, brutally; unusably broken, for more than a decade.

I just guess nobody at Apple cares?

lostgame··on Casio adds fitness features to original G-Shock digital watch
Interesting! My ‘hubby’ actually sold me her Apple Watch and I gave her a G-Shock in exchange as she felt the Apple Watch to be a little too much - but she actually recently (only yesterday) did the Toronto Marathon (so proud of her!) and I couldn’t help but feel like she could’ve maybe used or kept some interesting data from her runs in general.

I immediately sent her this and with her birthday coming up I’m thinking this could be a great gift. :)

lostgame··on Street Fighter II, paper trails (2021)
The only gaming console I still own is a SEGA Saturn - and a burned copy Street Fighter 2 Alpha practically lives in the disc tray. (I use an Action Replay cartridge solution for booting burned discs called ‘Pseudo Saturn Kai Lite’.)

I am fortunate enough to have a live-in music studio, and it actually lives attached to the secondary monitor in the studio for us to take breaks on and do a few fights to decompress. Pretty much never fails to be a hit.

I just don't see this as enough of a risk to be concerned about it, maybe it depends on where you live.

Oh, I certainly have absolutely no control over those types of decisions. I'm a soldier, not a general, I just do what I'm told, tbh.
