Most of the time I just read the article.

When I do read comments, it's almost always after having read the article.

loons2··on WHO Walks Back Claim That Asymptomatic Patients Can’t Spread Coronavirus
Actual healine: The Latest: WHO expert clarifies remarks on virus spread

Obviously if you're asymptomatic, you're not a patient.

loons2··on (Preprint) MMR Vaccine Appears to Confer Strong Protection from Covid-19
My thought exactly. I had the measles and mumps because I'm from before the time of the vaccines. Old people (of whom I curiously do not consider myself a member) never had those vaccines.
loons2··on Ask HN: PayPal Cards
I've had an active PayPal account since 2000. They've never sent me a card. Could you have unintentionally clicked something on an eBay page or similar?

loons2··on Why Do the Airlines Need a Bailout?
Let them sell off that stock they bought back and/or fail. New airlines would emerge... when/if the demand ever picks back up to what it was end of '19.

loons2··on 'Indian' or 'Native American'? (2019)
Having lived on several reservations myself, I can confirm. Indians' first preference is to be called by their clan or tribe. When those are not known, Indian is the preferred term.
loons2··on Ask HN: How did you improve your discipline/self control
Your actions, dictated by your subconscious, are at odds with what your conscious mind thinks is best.

To bring the two into alignment, something needs to be reframed. You can either convince your subconscious that the current behavior is detrimental, or preferably, just how beneficial the alternate, desired behavior will be.

Hypnotherapy, self-hypnosis and NLP are probably the best ways to accomplish that.

When I quit a 2-pack-a-day habit 24 years ago, it wasn't through "self-control and discipline" but by reframing self-image from "smoker" to "non-smoker." The difference between "I will not smoke this cigarette right now" and "I am a non-smoker" maybe doesn't seem like a lot, but the difference between an action and a self-identification is significant.

I didn't go through and look at all of them, but here are 4 of the source studies which certainly didn't require any FOIA. https://doi.org/10.1080/02772240701806501 https://doi.org/10.1080/15287394.2010.519317 https://academic.oup.com/cid/article/54/12/1778/455098 https://www.ebiomedicine.com/article/S2352-3964(17)30046-4/a...

loons2··on Music Generates Feelings That Are Only Weakly Bound to the Music
You're not a singer. ;-)
loons2··on Music Generates Feelings That Are Only Weakly Bound to the Music
I'm not so sure. An audience feels the music much more intensely if the artist is feeling it. If the artist merely performs it, the audience doesn't feel it nearly as much.

Great radio lab episode!

re: hearing something awful becomes pleasant with repetition The first time I heard this (composed using non-chromatic scale with 16 pitches to the octave) was somewhat uncomfortable, but after hearing it a few times, it became quite pleasant.

loons2··on Music Generates Feelings That Are Only Weakly Bound to the Music
I used to work in a machine shop in Florida that had no air conditioning. Summer time was always barely bearable. A woman who worked there would sometimes complain about the heat, sweat beading on her forehead. I'd think of a certain piece of music (this was ~25 years ago, so I don't recall what music now) and goosebumps would pop up on my arms. I'd tell her I really didn't see how she could be hot, because... "Look, I'm actually a bit chilly." Even though it quite amused me, she never seemed to be amused, though at some level, maybe she was. She kept coming back to complain after all even when she knew what my response would be.

I can, for the most part, now produce goose bumps without thinking of any music. I just feel the feeling that produces them (lovejoycompassion*awe), and they pop up, often accompanied by a lump in the throat and/or catch in the breath.

The subconscious has little ability to distinguish between imagination and reality, in the sense of, e.g. one who has a fear of flying will display the same physiological manifestations whether he's boarding a plane, or just imagining boarding a plane. The subconscious reacts the same to the perception regardless of whether that perception is through the mind's eye or the physical eye. This is how NLP works. By inducing the reaction in a safe space, it can be minimized or eliminated. Once minimized/eliminated in the office (or wherever), it remains minimized in the triggering circumstance.

loons2··on NSA has stopped collecting location data from US cellphones without a warrant
Sure they have.

> Next month, provisions of the Patriot Act — specifically, Section 215 — are set to expire, raising questions about potential reforms. “Now that Congress is considering reauthorizing Section 215, it needs to write a prohibition on warrantless geolocation collection into black-letter law,” Wyden said in a statement.

How about just LET it expire!

loons2··on Is America a democracy? If so, why does it deny millions the vote?
A Mrs. Powel of Philadelphia asked Benjamin Franklin, "Well, Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?" With no hesitation whatsoever, Franklin responded, "A republic, if you can keep it."
loons2··on Alphabet in bid to buy Fitbit
That story is about Fitbit, which I don't have.

I check my pulse against a stopwatch during the same minute that Chinese no-name is counting my pulse, and the result is the same.

loons2··on Alphabet in bid to buy Fitbit
Step counts as well as the fitbit. Heart rate is simple. How can it mess that up? Blood pressure is relative. You don't expect it to be accurate without a cuff. Same with O2. Those can show whether you're higher or lower "now" than you were an hour ago, a day ago, but they're not intended to be accurate on an absolute scale. Sleep seems to match up pretty well with snorelabs.

Now that I think about it, I wonder how well any of them keep time without syncing to their app.

loons2··on Alphabet in bid to buy Fitbit
My $10 Chinese smartwatch actually does more than my wife's fitbit. The fitbit app syncs with her weight-watcher's account, which is the only reason she bought it, and is the only thing it can do that mine can't.
loons2··on Alphabet in bid to buy Fitbit
Bought my chinese no-name (it probably does have a name if I saved the box, but there's no brand on the device itself) for $10. Time, stepcount, calories, distance, heart rate, BP, O2 sat, sports functions, sleep, etc. The watch does lose about 45 seconds a day, so I have to sync it once a week or so to keep the time display in an acceptable range. The app is otherwise irrelevant to me. Charge lasts about 6 days.
