lookdangerous··on Grok Build is open source
Profound. 1/55k regarding wealth really diminishes the role wealth plays.
lookdangerous··on Semaglutide improves knee osteoarthritis independant of weight loss
Ok it makes sense now. This is fasting.
lookdangerous··on Show HN: Miniwhips – Transform your car photo into its toy version
Hey, cool! I'd simplify the page a lot. Right now it (impressively) feels like a full product, but I want to see it as more of a tool/fun thing. I'd cut back a lot and focus on the images. For example, right now, when you load the home page, there is not a single picture in sight.

I think the pricing is a bit odd because I imagine using this for one or two cars, not 3 or more. Maybe some would be willing to pay a couple bucks per car, so you could raise the prices, and make 3 focused tiers instead of 5.

There's something odd about the pictures too. The thumbnails don't look like toy cars, they look like (photographically) sharpened images. It's only when I open the full picture that I see the toy-car-ness. Not sure what you can do about that.

The backgrounds, too, don't scream 'toy-car'. I think it might feel more like a toy if you render it on a desk, on a hot wheels track, etc.

That is what I noticed, critically. Way to build something.

lookdangerous··on The Church FAQ
Hmm, a six-necked guitar called the Beast on the Altar. That's a little on the nose.
lookdangerous··on Ask HN: Am I crazy or is Android development awful?
I found Kotlin easy to pick up, and use, but there are always complicated parts of it I haven't yet grokked. I'm sure a working knowledge of it is easy to obtain but I'm with you on the more dense pieces.
lookdangerous··on Coddled Kids Become Depressed, Anti-Social College Students
Unclear how to recreate that for the next generation. Taking away cell phones isn’t likely. More camping trips? Explicit trust extended to go dark?

Look up knees over toes guy - it's not regenerated hyaline cartilage, but if you're not familiar you _may_ find it interesting.
lookdangerous··on Tech doesn’t make our lives easier. It makes them faster
This is why the Sabbath matters (see a recent HN post of an article from the New Yorker). If not for intentional, ritual rest, we will accelerate and innovate and accelerate.
lookdangerous··on US Justice Department Urged to Investigate Gunshot Detector Purchases
It's your system too. It helps keep all of us more safe, and more alive, than we would be without anything. If you succeed in tearing down our system, it will be a very bad time for everyone.
lookdangerous··on Edge detection doesn’t explain line drawing
A drawing of a cup has 'cup-ness', as far as our mind is concerned. It's not about the micro mechanisms of edge detection or color or whatever, it's about how we recognize the quality of a cup in real cups and things that push the margins for what a cup is and in drawings of a cup.
lookdangerous··on Things I wish I’d known before fulltime RVing (2017)
Is it at all realistic to RV in this weather? I am curious what it would look like.

What about menu prices and the ability to comparison shop?
lookdangerous··on Whistleblowers are the conscience of society, yet suffer gravely
Any large group of people organized together for enough time forms a body - the body of tradition and regulation.

A large body of text is also known as a corpus.

Both the large groups and the large texts are dead in the sense that they do not change of their own power. They are static and closed to new information.

Both text and groups must be re-animated by the individual.

lookdangerous··on Why the brain’s connections to the body are crisscrossed
I have noticed my right eye twitch after working on the computer too long. I felt like my left brain had been dominant for too long.

lookdangerous··on Ask HN: Best E-Reader Experience?
Kindle paper white, a few years old. Almost as good as a book.
lookdangerous··on What it's like to be cancelled
There is an assumption being used by these companies, and Twitter generally, that I disagree with: "Once someone has behaved in a certain way, they can never be trusted not to behave in that way again".
lookdangerous··on What it's like to be cancelled
Your point well taken, but my issue is not so much that these companies decided to terminate his employment. I think that was cowardly and in essence caving to an imaginary mob, but let's leave that aside.

My contention is that this whole spiraled up from discovery of some bad behavior from the past, that seems to have been inflated into an exaggerated character assassination.

My contention with the grandparent comment is that "just don't be x" is not really an option if we are seeking redemption for past sins.

lookdangerous··on What it's like to be cancelled
I would recommend not saying sorry as a default, unless you are sure there is something you are sorry for.

Maybe sorry that you mistakenly upset her. But be careful about apologizing for something when you didn't do anything wrong.

lookdangerous··on What it's like to be cancelled
Should everyone who has ever behaved inappropriately in that area lose their employment when their behavior comes to light? Does it matter if they've since stopped behaving like that? Where do you draw the line? Should they be excluded from productive society altogether if one instance of misbehavior can be found, at any time in the past? Is that best?
lookdangerous··on Gallup: U.S. church membership dips below 50% for first time
I agree.

I grew up in a conservative congregation with a difficult-to-understand theology. I went through some dark and nihilistic points in my life but after being exposed to Jordan Peterson's study of Christianity as the mythology that underpins the culture of the west I developed a deep appreciation for these ideas and now consider myself a Christ follower.

lookdangerous··on Ask HN: How do you differentiate between Real anxiety and “Fake” anxiety
I guess you can try to face both with courage, and it seems like that’s what is needed and that is what you try to do already. The type of courage that arises indicates the type of anxiety you’re dealing with.

“I am going to be ok, I just have to face this” will arise when you’re dealing with the less specific, apparently unhelpful anxiety.

“This is going to be a difficult project, and I have a lot to learn but I am up for it” will arise when dealing with the more specific, attuned-to-a-real-world-complexity anxiety.

Does that make sense? Anxiety is always best met with courage; sometimes it’s a blunt courage and sometimes it’s a pointed courage, just as anxiety can be blunt or pointed.

lookdangerous··on Launch HN: GreaseBoss (YC W21) – Real-time system to manage industrial greasing
On this note, have you explored integrating your hardware/software into customer systems? I suppose customers may have existing logging applications they feed said paper forms into, and if you could feed that directly it would be useful.
lookdangerous··on Launch HN: GreaseBoss (YC W21) – Real-time system to manage industrial greasing
Very cool concept. I imagine there are countless similar avenues for automation of otherwise-paper-based maintenance management.
lookdangerous··on Uighurs: 'Credible case' China carrying out genocide
Values are useful. I don’t mean economic prosperity, I mean that our value system has largely worked.
