lookdangerous··on Uighurs: 'Credible case' China carrying out genocide
There’s a credible case to be made that freedom of speech has allowed the US to prosper.
lookdangerous··on Starlink is now Accepting General Pre-orders
Can Starlink travel with you? My wife and I are discussing purchasing a tiny home on a trailer and the ability to get a decent connection _anywhere_ would be an amazing amenity.
lookdangerous··on How to bootstrap to higher paying work (not necessarily tech specific)
This isn’t much, but it’s a little: even a bad plan is better than no plan.
lookdangerous··on Jeff Bezos Doesn’t Have Time to Be CEO of Amazon
Small things can make the world better too.
lookdangerous··on Jeff Bezos Doesn’t Have Time to Be CEO of Amazon
It’s a big task to calculate the net benefit/harm of one person, much less something like a large company.
lookdangerous··on Jeff Bezos Doesn’t Have Time to Be CEO of Amazon
You assume all it takes is money to end world hunger.
lookdangerous··on New report on Apple’s VR headset: 8K in each eye, potential $3k price tag
I know what parallax is, but what is lens focus? Is that an area seeking improvement in AR research?
lookdangerous··on This Year, Autonomous Trucks Will Take to the Road with No One on Board
I wonder how an autonomous truck responds when a tire blows
lookdangerous··on U.S. Capitol Locked Down Amid Escalating Protests
Maybe it was precipitated by a breakdown in the shared understanding of what constitutes reality somewhere earlier down the line.
lookdangerous··on Some Differences Between macOS and Common Unix Systems
Directory services seems more Unix than /etc/group because ‘everything is a file’.
lookdangerous··on Write code. Not too much. Mostly functions.
Is your home dir chock full of namespace folders?
lookdangerous··on AirPods Max
I would love to read that thread
lookdangerous··on Filesystem and Database are not cutting the problem space right
Maybe it’s because it’s late, but I don’t really follow what this is. It seems cool, but the explanation is too abstract
lookdangerous··on From fluffy to valuable: How the brain recognises objects
Seems a bit like squishing high-order categories onto biological phenomena. It seems a bit far fetched that the existence of cross-cutting categories like fluffy would be applied to all the different conceptions of what are basically tools or obstacles, as I've learned, that the brain tends to categorize into. If fluffy did exist as a sort of meta-category, though, perhaps it would exist in the touch circuitry as a bit of meta data associated with that specific usable object.

In a nutshell, my contention is that the brain does not have a library of categories it uses to efficiently map objects like some kind of database with tags, but rather builds an individual association for each object, of course in a web of relations, and it is this individual association that comes to represent the object as a tool or obstacle.

lookdangerous··on Huawei: 5G Is About Capacity, Not Speed: One-on-one with CTO Paul Scanlan
Does anybody have a good primer for what 5G tech is, in a nutshell?
lookdangerous··on Why shaving dulls even the sharpest of razors
I dropped a kitchen knife on my foot from a dish drying rack yesterday. Granted, it was not my toes, and luckily, it was just a surface wound, but I would probably be wearing shoes while shaving.
lookdangerous··on The Expansion of the Clean Network to Safeguard America’s Assets
Ah, I see the gist of your point. I wonder if this Clean distinction allows connection with Hong Kong or other Chinese but not-exactly-PRC groups.
lookdangerous··on The Expansion of the Clean Network to Safeguard America’s Assets
I don’t see how the use of the word clean is racist. It is obviously playing to disgust sensitivity [interestingly, authoritarianism rises in the presence of infectious disease] but it isn’t obvious that ‘clean’ any more refers to ethnicities than it does to political, teleological or ideological world views.
lookdangerous··on Pending Postal Service Changes Could Delay Mail and Deliveries
“ Negotiated Rates (NSA) can allows companies such as Amazon to buy postage at a significant discount. These deals should be eliminated. Why should a poor person pay more for postage than Jeff Bezos to ship the same thing?“

Rather than suggest that Jeff Bezos gets a deal on postage due to his influence, perhaps a better characterization is that the American consumer enjoys the efficiencies of bulk purchasing power, essentially arranged on our behalf by Amazon, which lowers our shipping costs. Bezos doesn’t get cheaper postage than we do; we buy things off amazon and win.

Edited for clarity.

lookdangerous··on No Longer in Shadows, Pentagon’s UFO Unit Will Make Some Findings Public
The New York Times ain’t what it used to be
lookdangerous··on When Covid-19 deaths are analysed by age, America is an outlier
Is corn syrup (instead of HF corn syrup) ok to consume, or is it too pretty darn bad fer ya?
lookdangerous··on Narrative Collapse
In a sense I agree with your point as I read it. I think that pursuing the cultural ethic/narrative you may meet bits and pieces of the truth. But you only meet the truth itself if you pursue it, and it is not always easy to tell the truth apart from what you wish to be the truth.
lookdangerous··on Blu-ray player keeps cycling on/off whenever plugged in
Blu-ray has java?
lookdangerous··on Out-of-Sync ‘Loners’ May Secretly Protect Orderly Swarms
It’s a noble function...
lookdangerous··on UN issues dire economic report as WHO warns coronavirus “may never go away”
I don’t mean to be naive, but wasn’t it always the case that this wouldn’t go away? I was under the impression from the beginning that eventually it would be out there and seasonal like the flu.
lookdangerous··on The Machine Pauses
Ah, but this jealousy makes perfect sense if God is indeed the ‘father of everything’. It is common in contemporary Christian parlance to refer to idols as things that distract us from God. This is a very useful concept that is born directly out of that commandment. And why no idols? Because any construct of the mind that interferes with seeing true reality is probably going to end badly- like someone in a blindfold walking off a pier.
lookdangerous··on The Machine Pauses
I read this story as a patterned warning against what happens when Humanity becomes too rallied around one particular creative act, so in agreement that they lose sight of the rest of reality and bring about their own downfall. This happens often imo.
lookdangerous··on Valve drops VR support for macOS
Awesome trackpads, and cohesive hardware from a single maker vs a massive ecosystem of different arrangements of components. Different ethos imo.
lookdangerous··on Ask HN: Do you ever go back and admire a piece of code you wrote?
They're lucky (or cursed) to have had the same person build so many different systems at the company.
lookdangerous··on Rebuilding our tech stack for the new facebook.com
The all-but defacto use of javascript transpilers especially invokes the image of 'Rube Goldberg' machines.
