livelielife··on AI won't steal your job, people leveraging AI will
> without much worry about the consequences

disagree, but the consequences I'm imagining are the consequences of loosing money due to not making those kinds of decisions.

the consequences for the decision makers are very different, the incentives which surround them and the consequences they'll face are not what you seem to think they are.

livelielife··on Safari releases are development hell

livelielife··on ‘Preparing to die has a lot to do with having had a good life’
be thankful for what you've already had, remember it, cherish it?
livelielife··on Own your work
this is a privilege.

the closest to this most of us ever get, is the 'sense' of ownership evoked by competent managers.

notice that it is a 'sense of' ownership. not real ownership;

anything that I create by myself, on my own, is not work; it's a hobby, it's fun, like really good games.

by this point I even think of work as all the other things I must do to afford rent, food, electric bills, chores, etc.

livelielife··on The Problem with Music (1993)
I agree with software not being engineering.

but I disagree that engineering is just execution. I disagree even harder that you can create something by throwing random stuff,, you may well find something cool like that but I think creation does require more of a clear intent than random throwing and finding as if by chance.

livelielife··on The Problem with Music (1993)
> unlike software engineers that typically have a 4 year degree, 2 year degree...

they do NOW. Back when a lot of us started getting involved with this, most 'engineers' had physics, engineering, mathematics, and other various backgrounds because software engineering degrees were too freaking new.

In the near-future (10 5? years? possibly sooner?) kids are gonna graduate with specialized PM degrees having gone to highschool thinking about being "product manager" when they grow up. When I was in highscool i wanted to be a Webmaster! now a webmaster is 15 people between desiginers, PMs, backend, frontend, QA, testers, blah blah blha

livelielife··on The Problem with Music (1993)
they are talking about the recording industry more than about music; so I suppose I agree?

the recording industry is the problem that music has. But this 'problem' is not limited to music.

for some people a job is just a job, and any job is potentially ok.

some other suckers like myself, we need something more out of our jobs; it sucks to be like this; it makes us easier to exploit.

except that side of computing for which users are really "input" to be turned into "output"

which is the industry for which users are really the product. user's data in, profits out.

livelielife··on Extinction of Steam Locomotives Derails Assumptions about Biological Evolution
rudimentary (old) evolution does only care about survival

but for "newer"(?) evolution it's a solved problem. so "it" appears as if to care about other things.

it's not quite correct to contrast 'rudimentary or old' with "newer". I think it's more reasonable to think of it as more or less fundamental to life. closer or further from basis survival

livelielife··on Extinction of Steam Locomotives Derails Assumptions about Biological Evolution
it's a creative analogy

as you dug into it, you found it didn't hold quite as well

but I think that all scientific theories are is just 'creative analogies' that people came up before we were even born (or at least, grown up enough to understand?)

livelielife··on The Three-Legged Stool: A Manifesto for a Smaller, Denser Internet
I think we're dealing with much older paradigms than the 20th century

gotta transition from a mindset of trading merchandise to a mindset of (technologically possible) non-scarce digital assets.

and we've traded merchandise for more than a few thousands of years, so I see a problem larger than just 20th century paradigms.

but trade is a bit nonsensical on digital stuff, as NFTs clearly demonstrated, so it's not a trivial issue

livelielife··on In the age of AI, don't let your skills atrophy
just makes me want to combine compilers with understanding of LLMs and how chatGPT does what it does to make real next-generation (but really next level) programing languages.

LLMs will make distinctions like functional, dynamic, procedural, ... become obsolete just like all assembly languages are now just assembly, but in fact used to vary by architecture (and even by each architecture's generation/version)

assembly -> C -> something made with a compiler which embeds chatGTP

yes, they're how it became obvious to me that "organized crime" has become part of 'legitimate government', or rather of "the state".

the state being this concept which encapsulates all institutions (government, academia, religion) and corporations (the military, the 'criminals' the banks, the media, etc) ruling over all of us; organizing us into a 'civilization'.

so the idea is that the legit government is really just the public known face of the state-apparatus, another part of this apparatus being organized crime, yakuzas in japan... chinese triads, italian mafia... latin american drug cartels, etc

R.I.P. software, now there are only services (backed by software) but the software is not longer distributed, just access to the service enabled.
livelielife··on Apple Music Classical
I think most classical music, by virtue of having been written along time ago and having been recorded rather well already, has no need to keep being re-recorded.

I blame the nature of digital assets for this; all we gotta do is keep copying all those files into brand new digital media and we can listen to what's been already recorded forever.

livelielife··on Microsoft's Software Is Malware
but open ideals are enlightened ones, so it cannot be bigotry per your definition.

I suggest staring deeply into why culture and natural language work like they do (or used to do, seems only stubborn 'artistic' types are working with culture like that nowadays)

livelielife··on EU Commission doesn't understand what's written in its own chat control bill
your response contains some very valid points around the dynamics of groups with bad reputations. You point out real negative consequences.

But you misidentify the group being criticized. it's not euro bureaucrats.

it's literal morons who take ownership and responsibility over things they don't understand well enough to even surround themselves with advisors who know what they're talking about.

I've seen this attitude from many very wealthy people, a willingness, a bravado even, to be ignorant about what they do for a living, e.g. I met a dude who told me had a software business, but he didn't even know what programing language his own property was written in.

what really sets me off is their unwillingness to find out. (oh, and that this are the kind of people at the top of our society)
