liminal··on Life cycle assessment of enzymatic PET recycling
I want this in pill form to remove microplastics from my body! (I realize that's not what's being developed)
liminal··on Geodesic domes made simple
These hubs look like they can greatly simplify geodesic dome construction. Lots of people here are commenting on the longevity of plastic or alternatives to geodesic domes, but I think that misses the point. Nothing is perfect for every application, but this looks perfect for getting a dome up quickly and easily.
liminal··on Rewriting TypeScript in Rust?
I'm assuming they've looked into this, but what about parallelizing the existing code with web workers?
liminal··on Rewriting TypeScript in Rust?
Unrelated, but my Typescript wish is an (optional) way to express its types at runtime in a reflective way. Most of the time you don't want this, but sometimes... sometimes you wish you could use `keyof` or somesuch at runtime.
liminal··on What if you delete the “Program Files” folder in Windows? [video]
The surprising this is that deleting those folders on Windows 11 results in it presenting as Windows 10.
liminal··on Want Your Country to Thrive? Give Geniuses a Universal Basic Income
Please no more "geniuses." This cult of personality celebrity idol worship is toxic. The U in UBI stands for "universal" -- you don't need to be a genius to apply. UBI is great for enabling everyone to advance to their ultimate potential by alleviating financial constraints. (It may also lead to laziness as people no longer need to advance to survive.) Hopefully the net benefit outweighs any negative consequences.
liminal··on Remote work is gutting downtowns
I'm continually surprised by the resiliency of the urban housing real estate market given the remote work transition. Why pay such a huge premium to sit at home? I understand wanting to be where the action is, but e.g. the New York rental market just seems insane.
liminal··on The FBI alleges TikTok poses national security concerns
I'm much more concerned about WeChat.
liminal··on Apple Rankings
Opal Apple Review - "A Tasty Unwiped Anus" https://applerankings.com/opal-apple-review/
liminal··on APL deserves its renaissance too (2018)
This is great. I just wish the page fixed the GoL equation at the top of the page so I didn't need to keep scrolling back and forth.
liminal··on Ex Police Officer Used Law Enforcement Tech to Hack Women’s Explicit Photos
The officers "resigned" so presumably they can be hired again one town over.
liminal··on New integer types I’d like to see
I'm not scared of them, but very rarely use them and believe that is generally true for others. Basic arithmetic operators that operate on numbers (as opposed to bitwise) are used much more frequently, so I feel very differently about them.
liminal··on New integer types I’d like to see
Completely agree that moving bit operations to library calls and freeing up their syntax characters makes a lot of sense. Also seems impossible!
liminal··on Measuring the popularity of different vector databases
What sort of scale are you dealing with? ScaNN looks more like a vector index like FAISS, rather than a full database.
liminal··on Velox: An open-source unified execution engine
So this is an Apache Arrow database engine integrated into other databases? My main takeaway is that it's great to see more projects standardizing on Arrow and pushing it further down the stack.
liminal··on Rust – A hard decision pays off
Any plans to open source the kv store?
liminal··on How fast is 12th Gen Intel Core?
Zoom battery usage per hour should be a standard metric. Nothing kills a battery faster.
liminal··on Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED
That one is/was Intel. Getting a bit long in the tooth, but still my daily driver.
liminal··on Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED
That must be the problem I had. I gave up using an external monitor because it turned my macbook into a toaster
liminal··on Comparing Rust and JavaScript
Interestingly Firefox is faster for both JS and WASM. I'm seeing:

  1247 px/ms Chrome JS
  1681 px/ms Firefox JS
  5878 px/ms Chrome WASM
  6382 px/ms Firefox WASM
liminal··on Frank Gehry has a few things to get off his chest
In NYC I lived in Gherry's giant apartment building. One thing that struck me was that the kitchen drawers were inside the kitchen cabinets, so if you wanted to get something from the drawer, say a knife, you first needed to open the cabinet. That was an action I could easily do dozens of times in a day and it always irritated me. Apparently, Gherry's office designed the kitchens and (I think) that was done to reduce the number of visual seams(?). Otherwise it was a mostly nice building.
liminal··on Absurd Trolley Problems
OK, then go with that: You are morally responsible for basically every evil in the world to the degree that you have the ability to change it.
liminal··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
If GP is in fact referring to the sotah, then it would contradict their argument even more because it is explicitly the husband having power over the woman's body without needing her consent or even any justifying evidence. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ordeal_of_the_bitter_water
liminal··on The math prodigy whose hack upended DeFi won’t return funds
The fact that Ethereum code is public seems to weigh in favor of allowing him to get away with his "hack". For any other financial instrument, we rely on verbal descriptions of how it will be conducted and behave. With Ethereum, the code speaks for itself -- for better or worse. This leads to a rather absolutist dog-eat-dog rationality that I don't much like, but also don't see how to avoid.
liminal··on NY Senate Bill S5474 proposing a universal single payer health plan for NYers
"Private insurance that duplicates benefits offered under New York Health could not be offered to New York residents. (Existing retiree coverage could be phased out and replaced with New York Health.)"

That is an important paragraph. If you want good public health care, you need to make sure the rich use it too. Canada does it by not allowing doctors to work in both the public and private systems. This law takes a different approach, instead barring the insurance companies from competing. Wonder if it will hold up in court.

Without this paragraph I don't think it could be a good system. With it, there's at least some hope.

liminal··on Canadians consider certain religions damaging to society: survey
There's lots of interesting nuance in the actual survey report: https://angusreid.org/canada-religion-interfaith-holy-week/

Edit: Towards the bottom of the report is a matrix showing how the various religious groups feel about each other (net positive/negative). Some takeaways: * Jews and Hindus are the only groups that think positively about all the others * Catholics and Evangelicals are negative on the Jews * Evangelicals are negative on everyone else

If evangelicals are negative about everyone else, it makes sense that everyone else might be less enthusiastic about them too

liminal··on Canada to ban foreigners from buying homes
Canada just had an election and the Liberals are secure in power from their deal with the NDP. This isn't pandering, it's them trying to advance their agenda. (Whether you agree with it or not)
liminal··on Advantages of Monorepos (2015)
Any suggestions for how to go from multiple Git repos to a monorepo? Preserving history would be really nice. I've looked at submodules and subtrees and both seem to have huge downsides and don't deliver the same benefits of a true monorepo.
liminal··on Why the West is reluctant to deny Russian banks access to SWIFT
Will sanctions need to broaden to include China or other countries supporting Russia?
liminal··on A gentle introduction to vector databases
Pinecone looks great. Any plans to have a non-hosted option?
