I'm not scared of them, but very rarely use them and believe that is generally true for others. Basic arithmetic operators that operate on numbers (as opposed to bitwise) are used much more frequently, so I feel very differently about them.

LuaJIT uses a bit library, while Lua 5.3 and up have the native bitwise operators. I prefer the former.
