lewis1028282··on Production-Grade Container Deployment with Podman Quadlets – Larvitz Blog
I use socket activation instead of running reverse proxy with `CAP_NET_BIND`. Caddy supports socket binding, and can handle SSL certs. I now just log-in every week or so and run `journalctl --user -f --since "2025-11-09" --grep "error"` to check for anything going on.

lewis1028282··on Missile Strike Confirmed as Cause of Azerbaijan E190 Crash – Aeroxplorer.com
The missle that struck MH17 detonated just above the cockpit
lewis1028282··on Linus Torvalds accepts a merge commit to the Linux kernel
I don't think Linus can merge from GitHub. Linux requires DCO and it to be reviewed by 2 people (or maybe this is outdated now?)
lewis1028282··on DeWitt and Stonebraker's "MapReduce: A major step backwards" (2009)
Some of these issues were solved by Spark. Do agree with the overall point, people shouldn’t be reaching for Hadoop when Postgres would suffice. Indexes are fast. Use them.
lewis1028282··on Debian on xz-utils: revert to version that does not contain changes by bad actor
It's easy to hide things in the Python build process as well. Things like using `getattr` instead of . (dot) etc
lewis1028282··on Scaleway launches RISC-V servers
What's the recommended way to learn RISC-V assembly (including SIMD)? For ARM I just found a book I liked and did the exercises on my Mac M1 (replacing system call numbers etc and changing page sizes).
lewis1028282··on Thoughts about the difference between European and American H/W and S/W design
I’ve never seen such an incorrect statement in my life — have you ever been to Europe?
lewis1028282··on A terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad day at Slack
Yeah but why pay someone to look after databases when I could get them do something else that'll have way more value. Using managed services just reduces how much money I have to spend upfront.
lewis1028282··on Implementing a System Call for OpenBSD
Yep I just changed the font size to 18px in my dev tools and it looks better. Still don't think serif fonts are the best for a blog but guess that's just my opinion.
lewis1028282··on Implementing a System Call for OpenBSD
Probably but reading something online is different to print
lewis1028282··on Implementing a System Call for OpenBSD
The font on that site is awful and too small. I’m on a MacBook Pro Retina 2015
lewis1028282··on Learning operating system development using Linux kernel and Raspberry Pi
You can just write char drivers that operate a slab of kernel memory, and implement all the syscalls like open, read, write on that piece of memory.
lewis1028282··on Learning operating system development using Linux kernel and Raspberry Pi
Might be a bit controversial but I found writing drivers for Linux on my raspberry pi helped me understand kernels, virtual memory etc. I used Linux Device Drivers (ldd3) which is free online. The book was written for the 2.6 kernel but someone on GitHub updated the code for the latest kernels.
lewis1028282··on Cleaning My MacBook After 16800 Hours of Use
Looks like the anti-glare coating is coming off too. That happened to my MacBook and Apple replaced the whole screen for free, that's pretty good considering it was 4 years old.
lewis1028282··on AWS Snowcone
Isn't that the same with any hardware you get? Someone could intercept your server from Dell and put malware on it.
lewis1028282··on Modern C++ gamedev: thoughts and misconceptions
That site is awful on mobile and filled with ads. Makes it impossible to read.
lewis1028282··on The Great CoffeeScript to Typescript Migration of 2017
Is CoffeeScript all but dead? I use Ruby and Python a lot so the syntax of CoffeeScript looks great to me!
lewis1028282··on Ryanair, Hamiltonian Cycles, and using graph theory to find cheap flights (2018)
>They also have poorly trained pilots, who either aren’t qualified for ILS or aren’t confident in poor conditions - on numerous occasions I’ve been on flights which they’ve diverted (Bristol becomes Birmingham, Bergerac becomes Toulouse, Porto becomes Madrid) because of weather, while other airlines land and take off without issue.

Completely wrong they have the same requirements as any other airline. It's the law to have a APL and a type rating + check rides every 6 months -- just like any European airline.

lewis1028282··on Ask HN: Is your company sticking to on-premise servers? Why?
What do you do about backups? I saw you only have one DC, are you worried about that DC being flooded etc and losing all your data?
lewis1028282··on Ask HN: What is your blog and why should I read it?
https://www.lewis8s.codes

I mainly make guides on how to use technologies such as Kubernetes and AWS amplify. Feel free to post any criticism.

lewis1028282··on Colab Pro
I mean when modern GPUs are $1000 I'm curious how you think $9.99 is too much.
lewis1028282··on How to start a blog using Hugo
I run my blog https://www.lewis8s.codes on AWS Amplify. It connects to a GitHub repo and builds it every time there is a commit to master. Uses CloudFront on the backend too.

Costs me around $0.01 per build which isn't bad. Just easier than writing my own script.

lewis1028282··on A lot of complex “scalable” systems can be done with a simple, single C++ server
Not really IO is always going to be slow compared to the CPU. The Python interpreter will be blocked 90% of that time waiting for IO anyway.
lewis1028282··on The new Dropbox
I hate the new website it's so slow. Even the blog took 10s to render, why does a blog need to be flashy, just show some text.
lewis1028282··on WWDC 2019 Keynote Livestream
Was U2F or FIDO2 or WebAuth announced for Safari? Chrome, Firefox and Opera have it, about time Safari added it too.
lewis1028282··on Google Cloud Is Down
So just got a new phone and trying to resync my 2FA for AWS but I can't because Gmail is down. Ffs.
lewis1028282··on Bob Widlar – The Life of an Engineering Legend
I’m guessing this is the guy who invented the Widlar current mirror?

For anyone wondering ICs need accurate current sources to drive transistors etc and large resistors take up loads of space and vary a lot with temperature so hence so are very expensive to manufacturer, hence why current mirrors are used all over the place. In fact the 1st stage of an op-amp is usually a current mirror.

lewis1028282··on GDPR After One Year
Yes but you consented to that.
lewis1028282··on GDPR After One Year
Yes but it is personal information about a living person? I doubt it, it's pseudo-anonymous so I believe it is legal under GDPR.
lewis1028282··on GDPR After One Year
You can, any bankruptcy information expires after 7? years, and school records aren't public.
