leeroyjenkins11··on What do we do if SETI is successful?
Get better camouflage so we don't get get found in the Dark Forrest. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_forest_hypothesis

>The name of the hypothesis derives from Liu Cixin's 2008 novel The Dark Forest, as in a "dark forest" filled with "armed hunter(s) stalking through the trees like ghosts". According to the dark forest hypothesis, since the intentions of any newly contacted civilization can never be known with certainty, then if one is encountered, it is best to make a preemptive strike, in order to avoid the potential extinction of one's own species. The novel provides a detailed investigation of Liu's concerns about alien contact.

leeroyjenkins11··on Police are not primarily crime fighters, according to the data
Wow, amazing, the policies of LA and CA aren't effective, even in 2019? Maybe the article should be titled police in LA and Riverside have stopped putting themselves in high risk situations, and focus on traffic violations. Maybe it has something to do with DAs not prosecuting crimes or reclassifing crimes.

leeroyjenkins11··on New NASA Director Swears Oath on Carl Sagan’s ‘Pale Blue Dot’ Instead of Bible
No, they wanted a federal government without a state religion. Like the church of England. The founders saw it necessary that people have a religious based moral system. The same system and values that they based the government on.

The premise all men are created equal relies on religion to be true. Inalienable rights is a judao Christian idea. Try arriving there with reason. Otherwise the will to power is exploitation of man by man.

The French revolution was based on reason and had a Reign of Terror with a bloody guillotine.

leeroyjenkins11··on Bob Lee, former CTO of Square, has died after being stabbed in San Francisco
Because if the DA says he won't prosecute certain crimes, why would the police bother to arrest someone that will be released on no cash bail. Why would they risk themselves or being in a situation where they need to use force and come under public scrutiny?

In many of these cities, these DAs are propped up with insane campeign funds, get elected, and refuse to charge, or push for no bail, so someone gets arrested for a felony, they end up back on the street the next day. Just read some of the cases where some people are arrested over and over and keep reoffending before their trial date.

leeroyjenkins11··on ‘America does so much more to subsidise affluence than alleviate poverty’
In 2012, the federal government spent $668 billion to fund 126 separate anti‐ poverty programs. State and local governments kicked in another $284 billion, bringing total anti‐ poverty spending to nearly $1 trillion. That amounts to $20,610 for every poor person in America, or $61,830 per poor family of three.

Over, the last 50 years, the government spent more than $16 trillion to fight poverty.

Yet today, 15 percent of Americans still live in poverty. That’s scarcely better than the 19 percent living in poverty at the time of Johnson’s speech. Nearly 22 percent of children live in poverty today. In 1964, it was 23 percent.

Was there actual evidence that Trump's changes had any affect on the derailments? From what I heard they had no effect. And last I checked , Biden has been president for 2 years. If they were vitally important, wouldn't the transportation dept worked to add them back?
leeroyjenkins11··on Gender dysphoria is rising – and so is professional disagreement
But that doesn't make sense when you look at the suicide rates of children who are trans. It is thought by some that the suicide rates are high due to lack of acceptance. But if the lack of acceptance caused the suicides, then all of these suppressed trans kids should have dying, but that's not the case. And the comparison between left handedness and transgenderism is absurd, because people have both left and right hands. Transgenderism is more akin to a bunch of kids deciding they have BID and want to cut off limbs. It's about a mental illness causing them to think something isn't true. Imagine what would happen if bulimia became socially accepted and celebrated, do you think we'd see a giant uptick in eating disorders?
leeroyjenkins11··on ‘Dilbert’ dropped by The Post, other papers, after cartoonist’s racist rant
Nick Cannon had some awful remarks: When you have a person that has the lack of pigment, the lack of melanin, they know that they will be annihilated,” Cannon explained on his “Cannon’s Class” podcast. “So the people that don’t have [melanin] are—I’mma say this carefully—are a little less...They’re acting out of fear. They’re acting out of low self-esteem. They’re acting out of a deficiency. So, therefore, the only way they can act is evil.”

He got fired, but is now rehired. The firing was basically because his comments about Jewish people. Most outlets ignored what he said about people with white skin.

leeroyjenkins11··on Eric Schmidt Is Building the Perfect AI War-Fighting Machine
What I fear are hypersonic weapons and other fast delivery systems that will require AI offensive and counter offensive weapons. At what point will humans need to be removed from the loop because a human response will mean that we would be destroyed. What happens when you have superpowers that have AI stats constantly checking on when the optimal nuke or emp time is, or even worse, faulty info or hacked info that tells it when are under attack and issues a counter offensive. Or it interprets human intent incorrectly.
leeroyjenkins11··on EU lawmakers approve effective 2035 ban on new fossil fuel cars
But the question is, why are fossil fuels going up? It's because governments and large corporations are openly hostile to the industry and are trying to kill investment. If you work for exon, would you bother to look at oil exploration that pays off in 10 years? Nah, but that's the goal artificially increase the price, make fossil fuels suck more than ev. So the goal is not to make EVs better, it's to make fossil fuels worse. The real losers are the little people.
leeroyjenkins11··on For some electric vehicle owners, recharging now more costly than filling up

After working on APIs from FMCSA, it's not easy, because they have no customer. My org was required by law to meet their deadlines. They setup a test api 2 months after the deadline. Their backup method of sending the data was another 2 weeks after that. It was through soap because they said that was the most secure. We had a team contact them about ambiguity in their documentation and it took 6 months to get a reply.

But showing adult content to minors is illegal already. If a minor tries to buy that content in a store, the store owner would be violating the by selling it. Why is the internet different? It's also illegal for an adult to give that material to a minor, even if a minor asked for it. Because Google is a corporation, are they not required to obey the law?
leeroyjenkins11··on Yes, Crypto Is All a Scam
I just want currency that won't be arbitrarily inflated, is digital that some group of people can't control my spending. I just want something that is a unit of value that I can trade for things I want. And it doesn't need to be traced either, I don't want the government to know how much I spend on steak.
leeroyjenkins11··on Ask HN: I hate gym. How to stay in shape?
For me, I have to have a schedule for me to go to the gym. It's part of my routine that I just do. I do some weight training, then cardio. Cardio indoors is boring, but the machines they have there have chess and sodoku, so I like to do that when I run or go on the elliptical. I make it where the goal is 4 times per week and it's built into my schedule. For a while it was right after work, I'd go on the way home, doing wfh I go to one nearby and train for 45 minutes.

I also avoid exercises that made me hate lifting, like power cleans. It is good to have a whole body program, but finding alternatives for exercises you dislike is super helpful

leeroyjenkins11··on Polyamory is getting slivers of legal recognition in America
It makes sense since separation of church and state isn't in the constitution. The establishment clause was to avoid the establishment of a federal religion. Many states had their own state religions until the 1800s. The founders did base the idea of Natural rights based on a creator. Most were either deists or christians. It's hard to come to the idea of inalienable rights without believing in a creator.
leeroyjenkins11··on Polyamory is getting slivers of legal recognition in America
Or maybe it was an institution for women. Remember that birth control until a about 150 years ago wasn't great. So you're a woman who wants kids, wants someone strong to provide income for many of the labor based jobs. If you get pregnant you have to take care of the baby. If the top man wants 20 women, will he bother taking care of you after the baby? Will he have enough time for you? Will the wealth he amasses provide for you after he's dead? Is your kid lucky enough to be the heir to the wealth? Will you be able to compete with the other women, especially as you get older and the man keeps getting young women?

There's a reason are more selective in mating and and it would be beneficial for monogamy within marriage for a woman especially.

And if you really want to get tribal and old timey, wouldn't the other men just kill and take these top men's possessions on this island, and wouldn't the women need to come up with another option, if they did flock to the top 20?

How many billions of lives have been saved by fossil fuels and technology though? From starvation, from extreme weather events, from exposure to heat and cold?

Would we be here if not for modernization and fossil fuels? If we stopped in the 60s, would other nations have done the same? Or would they have advanced to dominance?

leeroyjenkins11··on The Future Dominance of Solar and Wind Energy
So why can't I tell these people who want to charge me more to F off and have them build nuclear? And is the threat of global warming enough to warrant making everyones life worse? Is adaptation more costly than stopping the use of fossil fuels?

The bill in Florida was perfectly reasonable. Classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age- appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students according to state standards.

3rd grade classrooms are not places of intellectual freedom. They are places of indoctrination. A third grader does not have academic freedom, there is no countervailing point in the classroom. It is completely different than a university setting. According to the t xt of the bill, I can't think of any good reason for a teacher to want to violate the law unless they want to push their own agenda onto the children. And that should not happen in a public school.

leeroyjenkins11··on Disagreeable personalities do not have an advantage in power at work (2020)
Idk, it seems like agreeable people get into management faster, it just depends on the type. There are the agreeable people that do everything they can and go with the flow, but aren't visible because they don't stand out. Then there is agreeable that say things and do things to appear productive but really are faking competence. It's a little more cunning. Then they get into management where they don't need to be technically competent and their people pleasing pushes them higher, based on relying on others to do the work, or outright lying about the status of things. Disagreeable people can get to low management I think because if they stick around for years they're probably very competent and are willing to say the unpopular correct thing. But they stop rising because they don't play the game for the sake of playing the game. Unless they are adept at politicing. But the agreeable people seem to rise faster because they don't have friction. The problem is when they have issues delivering, but if there are things to blame besides themselves, it helps take the heat off them.
leeroyjenkins11··on The privatization of policing
Maybe because some moron on Twitter can have people calling for the head of cops who shoot people trying to stab other people. And maybe they need to pay police more because no cop wants to make life and death decisions and have uninformed people asking why they couldn't shoot the knife out of their hands. Couple this with DAs unwilling to prosecute crimes and reclassifing crimes to hide how bad things are, also having no cash bail, why would a cop stick around for what used to be a decent salary?
leeroyjenkins11··on South Korea's middle aged men are dying 'lonely deaths'
Encouraging people to marry and have committed monogamous relationships. Create a stigma to encourage people to only have sex inside of committed marriage relationships so when they get older the have a lasting relationship with someone.

Also it's would help killing the sex trade as a young man will pe willing to pay for it via websites or in person, but don't form those long term relationships before it's too late.
