ldargin··on iPhone Duo
That's possible, but unlock doesn't work after death.
ldargin··on I admire Fabrice Bellard. He is almost certainly a better overall programmer
Don't use LLMs except for the most menial things. Get as much practice in creating various things. Study expert-level books on related subjects. Foster your creativity in other areas too (i.e. writing, drawing, music). Don't pass up the chance to work with veteran developers; be ready for that opportunity when it comes.
ldargin··on Linux 7.0 Broke PostgreSQL: The Preemption Regression Explained
Database systems lock pages when writing to them, to maintain integrity. Using 1GB pages would cause excessive blocking in many if not most transactional databases.
ldargin··on Ask HN: Went to prison for 18 months, lost access to my GitHub. What can I do?
You might want a lawyer's help to get that person to assist. Perhaps through an agreement not to sue for past wrongs, and maybe with a payment.
ldargin··on Six Game Devs Speak to Computer Games Mag (1984)
It's not too late to take on a daring, creative project that stretches reasonable resource limitations.

ldargin··on Apple introduces iPad Air with powerful M3 chip and new Magic Keyboard
It's pretty simple. Get the Air if for yourself. Get the Pro if for work or if you want a better screen. Get the iPad for kids.
ldargin··on USPTO petitioned to cancel Oracle's JavaScript trademark
How about "JahScript" since it is the lord of the scripting languages?
ldargin··on Marine pilot loses command after ejecting from F-35B that kept flying
Maybe he didn't have the stick-and-rudder skills needed to ace that emergency; he's not like Sullenberger. But he prioritized saving his own life over that plane, and that's the real, unspoken problem.
ldargin··on Passport Photos
I took my own passport photo with my mirrorless camera, and a whiteboard as the background. It took a while to get it right, with no bright spots on the background and now shadows. It was accepted.
ldargin··on Is the Q Source the Origin of the Gospels?
Well, most PEOPLE are disinterested in history, except when it's presented to confirm their own views. That's a shame for those Bible school students because learning those things involves learning how people respond to religion, which can profoundly help them in ministry.
ldargin··on Is the attack helicopter dead?
I worked with a former army officer / test pilot who was formerly involved with the Comanche project, when the news came out that it got cancelled. He was quite disappointed with that, and disagreed with what was said about it's survivability. He said if they can't see you, they can't shoot you.
ldargin··on Mystery creator of Bitcoin identified, new HBO documentary claims
Proof, something that people can observe and recognize as true, not just circumstantial evidence. They should avoid repeating the Dorian Nakamoto situation.
ldargin··on Mystery creator of Bitcoin identified, new HBO documentary claims
Unless there is hard evidence, I'd consider this a waste of time. I don't know the purpose of "revealing" Satoshi if he's someone who doesn't want the attention.
ldargin··on Linux 6.10 Honors One Last ReiserFS Request Made by Hans Reiser
I'm glad to see he made that request, even from jail. Expressing magnanimity is a bit of freedom, in and of itself.
ldargin··on New iPad Pro with M4 chip and Apple Pencil Pro
I've never ever wanted a Macbook, but I'm ok with an iPad Pro.
ldargin··on White House wants Moon to have its own time zone, Coordinated Lunar Time (CLT)
It's a bit easy to understand that in the context of gravity, because gravity bends light down. If you shine a flashlight on Earth, that light is in free-fall, bending down. Time follows the same path, because the speed of light is fixed.
ldargin··on UK Judge Declares Craig Wright Is Not Bitcoin Creator Satoshi Nakamoto
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nick_Szabo
ldargin··on Hal Finney was the designer of Bitcoin
At the very least Sbazo.
ldargin··on Google cites 'durable cost savings' as CEO Sundar Pichai warns of more layoffs
There shouldn't be much controversy over fixing pandemic-era over hiring. But that's just the public-facing rationale. Betting more heavily on AI tech might be the real reason.
ldargin··on Google cites 'durable cost savings' as CEO Sundar Pichai warns of more layoffs
I wonder if this move is sound. Granted, inflation of consumer products hasn't died down, so they are getting choosier in how they spend, affecting Google's advertising revenue. So Google is betting more heavily on AI as a potential vehicle for revenue. But will the current AI tech really prove so disruptive, with high pricing?
ldargin··on The roots of ancient Rome's gladiator fights
I wasn't there; I was in college at that time, but I remember the attitude from military magazines, radio, etc. Iraqi soldiers in Kuwait were seen as universally guilty of "raping" Kuwait, and any who died deserved his punishment.
ldargin··on Ask HN: What 1980s/90s-era shareware did you purchase?
Me too, though I don't remember getting a key/coin holder with the disk. Strange to think of me indirectly buying peppermint schnapps at that time.
ldargin··on Greg Brockman quits OpenAI
It seems like your first opinion was correct.
ldargin··on Greg Brockman quits OpenAI
This suggests that a real schism is occurring at OpenAI. I anticipate hearing of two different philosophies at play.
ldargin··on Moving from AWS to Bare-Metal saved us $230k per year
Bare-metal solutions save money, but are costly in terms of development time and lost agility. Basically, they have much more friction.
ldargin··on Kevin Mitnick has died
Mitnick didn't steal anything except source code. He didn't do anything that was truly reprehensible. I feel it's premature to comment on SBF. He hasn't even been tried yet.
ldargin··on Kevin Mitnick has died
On the flip side, his child will grow up knowing he had the coolest dad ever.
ldargin··on Disney to Remove Dozens of Series from Disney+ & Hulu
Maybe to avoid paying residuals to the actors, producers, etc.
ldargin··on Hard feelings over mission change for NASA’s Pluto spacecraft
Tracking space weather and studying heliophysics sounds more useful than exploring the Kuiper belt, but much less fun.
