lawdawg··on You know, Google, the web already had this feature
I must have missed all of this outrage over Android, Chrome, GMail, Docs + Drive, Adwords, Analytics, etc, etc.

To be honest, I'm really glad Google finally pulled the plug on Reader instead of letting it rot to death. It's opened up the market for companies who will really focus on it. The same with iGoogle, which will be replaced by a much better "Google Now"-ish product.

Is this the tech version of Poe's Law? Or is it the new version of tin-foil-hatism?

You guys have a very, very strange definition of "evil". Google may not be perfect, and sure they deserve some harsh criticism and mocking from time to time for their choice of unofficial motto, but come on people, get a grip.

And Mozilla thanks Google for it's continued existence. Funny how it all works out in the end.
lawdawg··on Build collaborative apps with Google Drive Realtime API
1 million active users is not "popular" in Google terms. So-called tech "influencers" like to believe that they are more useful/valuable than any random user, but guess what, you aren't.
lawdawg··on Google Keep, a New Service for Taking Notes
Nothing is stopping you from backing them up yourself manually. At least you got a 3 month warning ... I certainly didn't when Yahoo decided to just close my @rocketmail email account.
lawdawg··on Google Keep, a New Service for Taking Notes
Is this a joke? A product with less than 1-2 million active users can't honestly be considered a "core Google offering".
lawdawg··on Google Keep, a New Service for Taking Notes
Reader lasted longer than almost all of the (major) RSS readers combined. What makes you think EverNote is going to be around forever?

Honestly, I don't understand the stance of using an inferior product (this assumes you believe Keep will be superior to EverNote, if not, then why even comment?) because you fear the superior one will be shut off. I rather use a product from a company that has a history of providing mechanisms to take out my data if/when they shut the product down instead of a startup/small company that will probably lose all my data when they go bankrupt or get acqui-hired.

lawdawg··on Facebook's New Feed
Looks awfully similar to the G+ feed. Not that there's anything wrong with that, just that its confirmation that G+ was probably heading in the right direction.

The bigger (no pun intended) news here is the much bigger ads that are now in the news feed.

lawdawg··on Google services should not require real names: Vint Cerf
If it asks you more than once after selecting a reason for picking no, then its a bug. I hear your complaint a lot, but I've never seen it happen in person to anyone I know personally.
lawdawg··on Google's Goals with Chromebook Pixel
This. Google is the perfect example of a company that runs primarily on Google products (GMail, Docs, etc) and even devs don't use their laptops for more than just ssh, remote desktop, and their browser (at least, in theory, they shouldn't need to). Plenty of companies that are in similar situations will find that the Chromebook Pixel is the perfect device for a lot of their employees.

That said, the Pixel is still a niche device and I don't think Google is expecting it to be more than that. There wasn't even any hype leading up to this announcement, just a simple blog post. That's not the type of thing you do if you are announcing, what you think is, a game changing device.

lawdawg··on What really happened at LivingSocial?
They count it as revenue before paying the merchant. Their true revenue is probably much lower than $500mm.
lawdawg··on Elon Musk's Data Doesn't Back Up His Claims of New York Times Fakery
In my own car during day to day driving? Of course not. If I was reviewing a car and was told that it was OK? Of course! Don't curious minds want to know if the missing miles will actually return on their own? It's not like his life was in any real danger, or that he was late for work or something.
lawdawg··on Elon Musk's Data Doesn't Back Up His Claims of New York Times Fakery
Because focusing on that would be admitting that:

1. The Tesla lost ~65 miles worth of range overnight 2. That their staff told Mr. Broder that the lost miles would return on their own.

lawdawg··on Elon Musk's Data Doesn't Back Up His Claims of New York Times Fakery
Did you (or 99% of HN) read the NYT article?

"When I parked the car, its computer said I had 90 miles of range, twice the 46 miles back to Milford. It was a different story at 8:30 the next morning. The thermometer read 10 degrees and the display showed 25 miles of remaining range"

"I called Tesla in California, and the official I woke up said I needed to “condition” the battery pack to restore the lost energy."

Looking back, I should have bought a membership to Butch’s and spent a few hours there while the car charged. The displayed range never reached the number of miles remaining to Milford, and as I limped along at about 45 miles per hour I saw increasingly dire dashboard warnings to recharge immediately. Mr. Merendino, the product planner, found an E.V. charging station about five miles away.

But the Model S had other ideas. “Car is shutting down,”"

---

Sounds like he was in constant contact with Tesla and they incorrectly stated that the ~65 miles lost overnight would magically return, and Mr. Broder, unfortunately, took them for their word and left the charging station with the dash showing less than the amount needed to make the trip.

Who is the real "liar" here?

lawdawg··on Elon Musk's Data Doesn't Back Up His Claims of New York Times Fakery
Actually it did when the car reported 90 the night before and a call to Tesla assured him that a quick charge would "re-calibrate" the system because of a software bug.

I love both companies, but you realize Mozilla makes most of their money because of a search deal with Google, right?
lawdawg··on Nokia sold 4.4 million Lumia smartphones in 'solid' Q4 2012
Wow, you need to relax. I asked you where you got your numbers from and linked to the only numbers I knew about (and they can't be from "any time in the last 2 years" as they include the Lumia 920 and 820 .....). If you have numbers showing that "vast majority of those Lumias will be the high-end 920 and the slightly-less-high-end 820", I'd love to see them.

Secondly, you need to look up the meaning of the acronym "FUD", because you really blew it there.

I didn't realize that 4 years of profitability meant not working out well.

> The vast majority of those Lumias will be the high-end 920 and the slightly-less-high-end 820.

Where did you get the breakdown by device? This is the best I've seen and doesn't seem to reflect your sentiment at all: http://www.neowin.net/images/uploaded/winphone-usage-dec.jpg

> Whereas those Android activations include everything and the kitchen sink.

OK, and? Nokia sells devices in exactly the same price ranges as Android. iPhone and GS3 sales absolutely crush Nokia on their own as well, so not sure what your point was exactly.

lawdawg··on Nokia sold 4.4 million Lumia smartphones in 'solid' Q4 2012
Last I read, Nokia accounts for 75% of all WP device sales, which means we can estimate around 6 million WP devices were shipped (not sold) during Q4 2012. Unlike Apple (which also calls shipments "sales" in their quarterly report), Nokia devices aren't in incredibly high demand (other than perhaps the 920).

I can't really see how this is good news for WP when Android and iOS activated 17.1 million devices on Christmas Day alone. I can't imagine Q1 2013 being any better for Nokia when they have no major devices going out, and no major WP upgrades upcoming either.

lawdawg··on Nokia Confirms It’s Keeping An Open Mind About Using Android In Future
At least HTC is profitable, along with a host of other OEMs that target China, India, and Europe. The reason that other OEMs like LG and Motorola are not profitable (but they aren't losing anywhere as much as Nokia is) is less to do with picking Android and more to do with the fact that they were doing very poorly before Android came around and Android was the main reason they are still relevant today.

As others have stated, there's nothing wrong with Nokia building out Windows Phone phones. The issue is exclusivity, which is understandable given the $1 billion a year Microsoft is paying them. I suppose we will see which way Nokia turns once that contract ends (whenever it does end).

lawdawg··on IE10 grabs 0.51% market share, Firefox passes 20% again
In what world is 34.77% to 35.72% "falling"? I think you are looking at the IE line.

Also, IE is way more aggressively advertised and promoted than Chrome is. I've probably seen this ad over 100 times since March:
