laurensr··on Ask HN: Android low latency audio in 2023
Some work has been completed in 2018 after having this issue open for 9 (!) years: https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/36908622
laurensr··on Why people care about PostGIS and Postgres
I also found DBeaver to be a huge improvement over tools I used earlier.

Recently I discovered Jailer which makes it very easy to navigate complex relational structures: https://github.com/Wisser/Jailer

laurensr··on 50TB IBM tape drive more than doubles LTO-9 capacity
I'm still looking for an affordable external tape drive. There's RDX but their tapes seem a lot more expensive per TB.

e.g. LTO 3TB costs 30 EUR RDX 2TB costs 265 EUR

laurensr··on Dude,Where's My Donations? Wikimedia gives another $1M to non-Wikimedia projects
You are referring to the Scots Wikipedia [1].

laurensr··on Microsoft AI suggests Ottawa food bank as a “cannot miss” tourist spot
They are places, commonly run by volunteers, where people with financial problems can get a food package at regular intervals, e.g. weekly. They sometimes rely on food donated by supermarkets with a 'best before' which has passed - which isn't a big deal for certain types of food such as rice and pasta.
laurensr··on PDF Tool – Modify PDFs in the browser without uploading
Does anyone know a decent open source tool to edit PDF form fields (create them, assign a name, ...)?
laurensr··on Internet Standard #80: ASCII Format for Network Interchange (1969)
Please refer to 'rendering and converting' at https://authors.ietf.org/choosing-a-format-and-tools
laurensr··on US universities need to stop elitist discrimination that Europe abandoned
Full article without login wall: https://archive.is/7JxMZ
laurensr··on Linux Air Combat: free, lightweight and open-source combat flight simulator
I wonder why you reference Onslaught Mode in Unreal. Does this game offer similar gameplay? To those who don't play UT: it is a game mode where teams compete to connect a network of nodes from their base to the other team's base.
laurensr··on The day I locked everyone out of the company intranet
You remind me of that time I wanted to `rm -rf ./*` but the dot hadn't registered... I now avoid that statement.
laurensr··on P1030680: Unbroken Enigma message (U534, 01 May 1945)
It's unfortunate how the Wikipedia article [1] about the Enigma does not mention Alan Turing at all.

laurensr··on Show HN: Arroyo – Write SQL on streaming data
Would Arroyo be an alternative to Confluent KSQL?
laurensr··on Universal Railway Bus
Nice to hear about this! It stands for Java Model Railroad Interface.
laurensr··on Check if your IKEA chair is compatible with your screen
The exact same thing has been bothering me for months. My screen blinking when a colleague stands up.

And we ruled out loose cables or anything like that

laurensr··on What is ChatGPT doing and why does it work?
Not everyone has an inner monologue https://mymodernmet.com/inner-monologue/
laurensr··on Ask HN: How does this bank delete a sent SMS?
This Belgian bank sends new pin codes by SMS. Phones delete them after 2 days. How is this achieved?
laurensr··on Ask HN: What is the weirdest or most surreal recent technology you have seen?
"Strandbeest": crawling robots powered entirely by wind - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C97kMKwZ2-g
laurensr··on ssh whoami.filippo.io
So users can add other users' SSH keys (sourced from GitLab, ....) to their GitHub profile, essentially depriving the actual key owner from using GitHub
laurensr··on Paul Otlet's Mundaneum anticipated the internet [video]
To learn more about Belgian efficiency, watch the video "Belgium for beginners"

laurensr··on The Human Brain in Numbers: A Linearly Scaled-Up Primate Brain
I could only access this website after removing the WWW from the URL: https://ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2776484/
laurensr··on Tell HN: Apple Pay works in non-Safari browsers in iOS 16 Beta 3
Correct, as Apple forces all 3rd party browsers to use their rendering engine.

It's like using a winforms webbrowser control in .NET and giving the window a title with your own brand name.

laurensr··on Emoji Kitchen
That's probably also why we don't have a real gun emoji (or it's rendered as a water pistol in many places). Although guns aren't the nicest invention, they are real and sometimes need to be represented graphically.
laurensr··on WordPerfect for UNIX (1992)
As a kid I used to have, what I thought, was WordPerfect 6 on MS-DOS 6.22 It did not have a blue background, but looked graphical like MS Word today. It even had some clipart such as an alpinist.

Does anyone recognize the software I'm describing? I've been searching for this out of nostalgia.

laurensr··on TwinBASIC: A modern BASIC aiming for 100% compatibility with VB6/VBA
It seems this is a competitor to RADbasic: https://www.radbasic.dev/
laurensr··on Show HN: A short dystopian game I build last weekend
Suggestion: create a temporary user account for new users which allows them to start the game immediately without creating an account. The 'anonymous' account can then be upgraded to a 'real' account if the user wants to.

laurensr··on SketchUp for iPad: 3D Visualization on iPad
As a not very skilled CAD drawer I went with Designspark Mechanical, which makes it very simple to go from a 2D sketch to a 3D model. I believe it is freeware but does require registration.
laurensr··on Chamelon: MVP persistent block storage for MirageOS
It was being used in production on TI-84+ [1], haha

laurensr··on MirageOS 4.0 – Self-managed internet infrastructure with unikernels
This name is associated with a lot of nostalgia for me, as it is the same name as the shell launcher for Texas Instruments' TI-83/84 graphing calculators.
laurensr··on Ask HN: My Google account was hacked, Google says they can't help
