lasc4r··on Apple to wind down electric car effort after decadelong odyssey
This never made sense. They just have an ungodly amount of money to burn.
lasc4r··on After 151 years, Popular Science will no longer offer a magazine
Not sure if we ever had a subscription but I read them a lot as a kid. Along with popular mechanics. In a waiting room nothing even comes fucking close. Or came close. RIP.
lasc4r··on Zero Motorcycles makes its service manuals free
Do they not go out of their way to make it difficult? I had to scrounge google which led me to a forum thread for Triumph bike manuals. Only managed to get a link to a website associated with Triumph where they let you pay on a per day basis to look at manuals. Spent almost an hour making folders and manually downloading every individual section.

My takeaway is that they want their bikes to get serviced at dealers rather than allow people to more easily work on their own bikes.

lasc4r··on We need scientific dissidents
Experimental gene therapy huh? Go back to 4chan friend.
lasc4r··on We need scientific dissidents
I seriously doubt IMs and email are being censored. You sound like someone who gets their information from grifters that complain about censorship despite having huge audiences captured by masses of lazy thinkers.
lasc4r··on The lost saga of Fossil Cycad National Monument (2017)
That should probably be the default unless there's a compelling reason not to since they have the best claim to historical and cultural importance.
lasc4r··on Webb Telescope detects most distant active supermassive black hole
They are just regions of spacetime with a lot of mass and very strong gravity.

1) They aren't power sources, but if they are spinning that rotational energy could theoretically be harnessed: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penrose_process

2) Uh, no?

lasc4r··on Monster gravitational waves spotted for first time
I feel like you need to see _this_ spacetime video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4d0EGIt1SPc

If you think LISA is mad this will blow your mind.

lasc4r··on Rarbg Is No More
You could search using the IMDB ID/url suffix, which almost always gave you exactly what you wanted. RIP.
lasc4r··on Rarbg Is No More
Not really, it's a steaming pile of it's former self.
lasc4r··on BBC – Elon Musk among experts urging a halt to AI training
In what area is Elon Musk an expert?
lasc4r··on More than 75 percent decline over 27 years in total flying insect biomass (2017)
Do you think insecticides are altering where the bees die? Otherwise it sounds like you're describing a large population of former bees.
lasc4r··on More than 75 percent decline over 27 years in total flying insect biomass (2017)
Corn doesn't get much insecticide, herbicide yes.
lasc4r··on Fireball Spotted over Northeastern USA
I saw one maybe 10 years ago, I was outside at night and noticed it get bright. Looked up and there it was, or the last bit of its streak was. They aren't that rare apparently, but the big ones like in this video are rare: https://www.amsmeteors.org/fireballs/faqf/#2
lasc4r··on Server stats say movetodon.org reached a new record of 49k users yesterday
That's one way of looking at it, too much like explaining the wonder of efficiency that is the gasoline supply chain without mentioning CO2 though. Kinda changes the 'incredible amount of value offered' for me.
lasc4r··on First active chemistry on an exoplanet revealed by Webb telescope
It uses the sun's gravity as a gravitational lens. You fly a normal sized telescope to the focal point. The theoretical resolution is pretty mindblowing, we'd be able to make out oceans and continents on exoplanets.
lasc4r··on Electric ferry uses a long extension cord [video]
I guess that helps explain how the ferry was only using 100 liters of fuel per day. Pretty high hanging fruit for electrification in that respect.
lasc4r··on Digital books wear out faster than physical books
The latest On The Media episode did a segment on this lawsuit as well, starts at 21 mins.

lasc4r··on It amazes me how many people are blissfully unaware of the rampant tether fraud
I'm a fan of the ezra klein show, but this is probably the worst episode. I vaguely remember a torrent of nonsense from someone whose job it is to make cryptocurrency sound good with basically no pushback.
lasc4r··on New insignia for Air Domain Intelligence has a UFO
I think the real meaning in hidden in plain sight. The US is finally going to invade Canada once and for all.
lasc4r··on Pennsylvania County Sued over Illegal Ballot Drop Box Usage Captured on Camera [pdf]
It would take tens of thousands of votes in a handful of specific states, but yeah, it would requires a vast conspiracy. Trump Republicans are trying to just that under the assumption that the 2020 election was stolen anyway. Which is, uh, not great.
lasc4r··on The anti-inflation pivot of 2022
The post you're replying to mentions huge youth unemployment in China, doesn't Zeihan think China will collapse because there won't be enough workers? I was considering reading Zeihan's recent book but he comes off as kind of a fraud.
lasc4r··on US border forces are seizing Americans' phone data and storing it for 15 years
I need to prioritize phones with SD cards way more. This is ridiculous.
lasc4r··on Ask HN: Why are bookmarks second class citizens in browsers?
This sounds nice, I just tried to do this and it doesn't work. Restarted FF and then my PC, still nothing when I open a new tab. It's too bad too, because I just realized how annoying my bookmarks bar is.

edit: It seems that if your new tab is set to 'blank page' it doesn't work, the default "firefox home' works though. For...reasons.

lasc4r··on Asus Zenfone 9
That's good since it's 9.1mm thick
lasc4r··on Two weeks in, the Webb Space Telescope is reshaping astronomy
That's pretty amazing, I'd certainly not expect more than a small time shift since it still managing to get the same light source to the same location to be detected.
lasc4r··on Two weeks in, the Webb Space Telescope is reshaping astronomy
Other than deliberately pointing a telescope at massive objects, I'd say no.
lasc4r··on The rise of air conditioning (2018)
Not achieving climate goals will also kill people. So pick your poison I guess.
lasc4r··on Supreme Court limits EPA’s power to cut emissions
Congress has been totally broken for years, now the Supreme Court will be.
