langsoul-com··on Anatomy of an internet argument
The question is whether it's worth the time. If you know someone face to face and plan to interact with them in the future. Then you must be able to continue conversing with them. So the time investment to have a decent conversation is necessary.

Is online the same? It's possible to talk to someone new every time. Will this long process happen for each person?

There's a reason why first impressions matter. Yes, someone who left a bad first impression could be a diamond in the rough. Except, why not just chat with the other diamonds instead?

langsoul-com··on Death of the Department Store
Go to Asia, the department store is not dead in the slightest. Though, definitely changed a lot.
langsoul-com··on Foundations: Why Britain Has Stagnated
How can there be a 360, 000 page document to build something. That number seems so outrageously high. Is the font size massive or something?
langsoul-com··on Intel lost the Sony Playstation business to AMD
Why did amd win the console business? It seems that even though they weren't number 1, they were always on most consoles.
langsoul-com··on Adapter lets you use cheap eSIM plans on any Android phone
https://frank-ruan.com/2024/08/27/removable-euicc/

See that for more info and a comparison of the esim adapters.

Interesting point is >Their solution is not the commonly-used Eastcompeace solution. Instead, they used disassembled Apple chips. As you can see in the EasyLPAC screenshot. They used these recycled chips and re-engineered them.

langsoul-com··on Adapter lets you use cheap eSIM plans on any Android phone
This is pretty cool. Actually a lot of mid range phones don't have esim compatibility and it's extremely annoying to need to buy a physical sim.

The cost for these seems pretty high though.

langsoul-com··on How to succeed in MrBeast production (Leaked PDF)
Let's not indite just HN here. It's more the world is the same and this is just an extension of the internet norms.

Think toxic game forums. They used to be nice and a good place, but now? It's a hot mess and everyone who wants proper discourse already self selected out.

langsoul-com··on Founder Mode, hackers, and being bored by tech
Let's not forget that people themselves changed and what is popular. Look at any top show hn post and you'll see all this talk about the market fit, the competitors, and how much money that product can make.

The hackers have disappeared and we're apart of the prohlem.

Should really have a tag rule to prevent any boring business start up bogus discussions when the poster wants.

langsoul-com··on The Post-Jamstack Era: Just Use Rails
If the author truly is using nextjs just for static, then it should be a simple compile and host the output folder?

Strange to say use rails for static, but the author argues how server less is a nightmare. Though, I also think the same, use nextjs just for the react frontend and a proper backend.

langsoul-com··on Does your startup need complex cloud infrastructure?
Does the tech lead have the CTO or CEO's graces for that decision?

Why did the tech lead decide to move everything to lambda when you only have 1k DAU? Can they be reasoned with or is it lambda or the highway?

You can pull put the stats and do comparison, note the wasted time, how it's not beneficial but rather detrimental. Note how long it now takes to debug for such a small codebase, then extrapolate that out.

Having tons of lambdas is a massive pain in terms of debugging. Cloud watch is not that great to debug, and the debug tooling tends to be rather expensive, like data dog so not too much is invested. Or it's too resource intensive to setup open telemetry.

langsoul-com··on David Chang on the long, hard, stupid way
This is actually quite a good point. A single person taking shortcuts is not bad, but certain things are done in a particular way for good reason.

One shortcut today is another tomorrow and the day after. It's not about the single person either, but rather the culture itself.

Now this is different from improving processes or efficiencies. The incentives and motivations also matter. Take a large group 1 hour before the restaurant closes. For the staff, it's shit, why didn't they come earlier. But for the restaurant it's great news, more money and potential repeat customers.

langsoul-com··on Why GitHub won
They had the timing, the name and the reputation boost.

Though I wonder if bit bucket would win if they had githubs name

langsoul-com··on Bitten by Unicode
If anyone has worked with spreadsheets across Mac, Windows, Linux and various online ones. They're also a nightmare.

Some characters are encoded differently based on what system set it. So an if statement character comparison runs into the same misery as the author has :(

langsoul-com··on People can read their manager's mind (2015)
Incentives rule this world. Words are weak, if someone says they'll be rewarded for something, but isn't. Will they truly do the same thing again?

Valve is a good example, their long term support of existing features is poor. But their ability to come up with new and interesting features is amazing. Their compensation for new things is much higher than maintaining old things.

Yes, on an individual level people might not always chase the rewards. In fact, it's better not to always do that. In tech, it's way better to learn more to up skill ones self as that'd lead to better earns later. However, on average, what is rewarded will advance further than what is not.

langsoul-com··on Kids who use ChatGPT as a study assistant do worse on tests
Not surprising. Test is all about memorising things. If you don't need to memorise everything because it's on google, you won't.

Thus, when the test rolls around, nothing is memorised and then they do bad.

It's like memorising phone numbers VS keeping in the contacts app. Before I memorised tons of numbers, but now they're all on the app and I barely recall my own.

langsoul-com··on Long-term unemployment leads to disengagement and apathy
Employment has an added benefit of being a social status, providing funds to live one's life, having structure and community.

Those without employment can achieve all those things, it's just much harder and most average people would crumble.

Remember the idea that if everyone had a universal basic income. They'll be an explosion of creativity and arts as now everyone is free and liberated. Except that isn't the case. People turn to harder and harder drugs to pass the time.

langsoul-com··on The Art of Finishing
Always have to keep project scope at bay. We dont have infinite time nor energy, so there's only so much we can do at any one time.

Make the goal at the start and ruthlessly discard (note somewhere else) any additional ideas. I find myself giving up projects after coming up with brilliant extensions to the project. When I look at it, it's way too big and immediately demotivating.

langsoul-com··on Microsoft's 'Recall' feature can't be uninstalled after all
Currently using Ubuntu as my main driver, replaced Windows.

I wouldn't really say the user experience is as good as Windows. Apps hang more often, steam freezes and restarts more. Games crash more often. All problems I wouldn't have on windows.

Even though Linux has gotten really far, I wouldn't be using it if windows wasn't so shit now.

langsoul-com··on Bill Gates tries to install Movie Maker
Was it really that bad back in 2003?
langsoul-com··on AirTags key to discovery of Houston's plastic recycling deception
Plastic recycling has always been a sham, just one people bought into as a feel good narrative.

Recycling plastic more than once is basically impossible. It's also not a free process, as grinding up plastic creates micro particles that pollute our air and rivers.

The question is whether there's any material that's cheap, malleable and mass produced enough to replace plastic.

langsoul-com··on HDMI Forum rejects AMD's HDMI 2.1 open-source driver
Isn't amd in a pretty bad position with display related tech?

Hdmi rejected them, display port isn't ubiquitous enough, thunderbolt (usb c) is owned by Intel.

langsoul-com··on Interviewing the Interviewer: Questions to Uncover a Company's True Culture
Unless desperate. It's always better to aim for a good fit company. Otherwise things will fall apart and so much work is required for resumes and interviews again.
langsoul-com··on Trainwreck Design
This is why I quite like Phpstorm over vscode.

Yes, vscode and plugins can do everything. But Phpstorm integrates everything into one coherent package. Too many random directions is more annoying.

In terms of software dev, it's quite hard to get a good app wide experience. There's just so many people working on the project. Without someone to make sure things are aligned, things fall apart into random wild patterns everywhere.

langsoul-com··on Disrupting a covert Iranian influence operation
LLM powered disinformation machines is terrifying. The barrier to entry and sustained cost is so low.

But the social impact is significant. I'm reminded of a fake story about kid kidnapping in India, that caused a mob to burn the two people that were targeted alive... They were completely innocent, the mob attacked them based on fake news. Now, that can happen enmasse.

langsoul-com··on Move Slow and Fix Things
This article has zero substance at all.

What's the advantages of moving slow and fix things? The author mentioned he moved slow for his existing open source projects and non-profits over 15 years. Why not distil some lessons about what moving slow means and what life experiences he went through to put forth this perspective...

Half of it was just ranting about vc culture and Paul Graham...

langsoul-com··on Total War: Rome II and Creative Assembly – My Statement Ten Years On
It's also important to gauge how the company will pan out in the future. Leadership comes and goes, but the fundamental culture, incentives, self selection out and which type of person gets hired.
langsoul-com··on Total War: Rome II and Creative Assembly – My Statement Ten Years On
The problem that everything is good because it's profitable is quite insidious.

Usually, these early warning signs don't come into effect until much much later. And by then it's almost too late. See total war nkw with the latest Pharaoh release. The debt collector has come to get their due, with interest.

langsoul-com··on How I won $2,750 using JavaScript, AI, and a can of WD-40
You neglected that time is the most important variable here.

It's better to enter a winnable completion rather than one that cannot be found without disproportionate effort.

Hackathons are a good example. Global, online ones tend to be long, time consuming and near impossible to win any prize. Compare that with local only, now there's a chance as the number of competitors is limited to the geographical region.

langsoul-com··on The Decline of Etiquette and the Rise of 'Boundaries' (2022)
Having to figure things out is quite frustrating. Mainly around phone etiquettes.

But confronting every person about, what is effectively personal preference about phone use in meetups, is quite annoying

langsoul-com··on Hacking a Virtual Power Plant
That's true in theory, but unrealistic in practice. How can everyone know everything about everything?
