lakotasapa··on Ask HN: What are 100K dollar ideas but not million dollar ideas?
It's clear to me that very few of the HN'ers have children. As I have a 3yr toddler and trying to help him navigate this somewhat unforgiving ugly world as of now. It's hard for me to find him that isn't ADHD or Corporatized msgs. $100k idea? Make small but meaningful children apps. Just tonight alone trying to steer him away from ADHD inducing mindless apps and videos. I spent $20 more meaningful content for him. I'm looking into this myself as... Necessity is a mother of all inventions.
lakotasapa··on Need some advice as a highly skilled but a broke tech guy
I'm in similar boat however not nearly as skilled as you. I'm running out of time and money both in literal sense of age and finances. I'm capitulating between creating some "X"aaS services or creating/buying a biz. My problem is I've done my value proposition and I have too many projects. At the moment I'm listing them for quickest to ROI. Or just jump blindly head first and do the "just eat the frog."
lakotasapa··on Ask HN: Where in Bay Area are early stage startups and entrepreneurial ppl?
I'm in silicon valley. True there are plenty of engineers, most you'll find are wannabes with no real skillet as an entrepreneur/startup. They just want to ride on coat tails of someone who knows what where how.

Most capable ppl with startup ambitions already have their connections.

You are far better just soliciting for partners on HN or other startup sites of which there are plenty with plenty also looking to partners.

Hate to sound cynical and/or degrading but moat I've met through meetups and alike groups are all wannabes.

However like anywhere else, there are still plenty like myself who wants to get started on that endeavor too.

I've worked for all the FANNG+M and find all capable ppl have their contacts they trust

The only time you maybe be successful is if you are already funded.

But there is one advantage of doing all that in the Valley; funding is easy. Almost every serious meetups have someone in VC world scouting.

Oh also lawyers who have been there done that to setup you up with term sheets and sound contracts that's been proven.

Reddit is also someone you can maybe find someone.

btw the "it" place(s) to be is Palo Alto and SF.

It as mentioned before breaking in and getting noticed is impossible unless you already got in roads with connected ppl.

Ol adage: It's WHO you know not WHAT you know.

lakotasapa··on Re-use cell phone as a computer?
Yup, using my Samsung S9 along with a product called Uperfect X. Loaded up nodeJS, vuejs even python using Termux. then used VScode. Has busybox, so most cmds are there. No root either.

Here's a nice article outlining these hdmi/keyboard shell laptops

lakotasapa··on Ask HN: What are some funky, unconventional ideas you have?
I think someday and because the ultrarich wants to live forever and trying to do it medically, but it can't be done. Just can't. However, there is one way....; matrix.

I truly believe we will be able to take a snapshot of every single braincell activities and replicate them in a computer. Then place you in a virtual world of your choice to live however long your funds allow you to. One random day as you agree to this, when you goto sleep, you'll be moved over to the digital world and you wake there.

So the long tail of any long living cloud computing services like AWS will one day host your brain at a monthly fee. That monthly fee will entitle you to a world and a life of your choice.

I cannot see this NOT happening. We will soon discover that trying to stretch out human lives is all but impossible, because even if you could stretch another 50yrs or even 100. What aliments awaits you on a daily basis? Have you seen a tortoise at 200yrs old?

But digitally replicated, you would be free of ALL things that holds you back both societally and humanly.

Then when your funds runs out,... lights go out just like that. No pain, suffering and to make sure you can't really calculate your "final" days. Your days in a virtual world would be a repeat of one of your favorite days but you won't know that it was. The beauty of that is you get to live your fav day over and over and over...

lakotasapa··on Ask HN: How will you prepare for a Covid-like disease in the future?
Some questions too irresistible. :)

I was thinking about this and came up with some thoughts:

  - Have as much $$ as possible both in virtual (equity & crypto) and gold.
  - Off grid as much as possible water, sewage and elec
  - Grow own food; hydroponics, chickens, meal worms ... ?
  - stock up on non-perishables with long shelve life
  - live close to friends/family
  - good medical kit for all kinds including anti-bac and anti-viral
  - EV cars w/portable generators and a hybrid
  - Multiple internet, SpaceLink, hardline, cellular in parallel
  - servers at home to scrape daily of news and interests
  - home automation / defense
  - get a glock
  - Watch more dystopian movies and learn
  - walkie talkies to all who need to be in touch. Even out of state once they get closer
  - get a HAM / shortwave radio for all your close family/friends
  - fireproof safe of all your info
:) my short list. Also applicable to an event of an Earthquake.
lakotasapa··on Ask HN: What is the minimum number of people required to reboot civilization?
Did you know every blueeyed individual can be traced back to a single couple in UK?

>genetic mutation which took place 6-10,000 years ago and is the cause of the eye colour of all blue-eyed humans alive on the planet today

Having said that, ideal would not so much how many people but how diverse of a gene pool can you get?

Then add in human intervention ie. CRISPR if possible to then do gentle mutations to ensure the diversity keeps growing instead of shrinking once procreations starts.

lakotasapa··on Ask HN: How do you explain the sloppiness of modern software?
SW in its current state of things is horrible and unacceptable. I agree. I cannot understand how remotely is it possible basic basic intuitive logic fails. I've been in this industries for decades as QA, SW, Pgm Mgr/TPM. And the fault is at all levels. Not just QA.

QA: For the most part QA always wants to do the right things and push but they are so low in say, it matters very little to none. And having worked at FAANG/M, QA's are wives/friends/no industry experienced hires as favors of engineers who couldn't spell QA if their lives depended on it.

ENG: they do what they are told and agreed to an absolute minimum. I.E. don't even bother with boundaries yet alone check corner cases and don't even bother with basic smoke/regression testing before checking in. They rather just break the build and spend 2-3 days on retraction than to spend the 2-3 days of being thorough, complete and working.

TPM/Prj/Pgm Mgrs: Meeting their own badly projected schedules and/or trying to meet unrealistic schedule driven by factor outside of their control.

Prod Mgr: Badly researched, designed and defined product. A good product doesn't need to be explained. It should be designed to just work. Thanks Steve Jobs for pushing that mantra. It's like products for babies designed by people who has no concept of a child, or designing Autonomous driving by a person who doesn't own a car or drives.

A clear example what happened to me today. I have Googl home thingy in every room. As a father to a toddler, having voice control at times is indispensable. Today, I tried to get a mini to stream music but it tried to stream a video stream and complained that I couldn't on that device, but it proceed to then stream the audio portion? And before I noticed that it was, I clarified my request by saying to stream music. So it did...BUT it was streaming the audio portion of the video it says it couldn't do and the new content. I tried everything under the sun to stop one or the other or all on every device...NOTHING. It kept playing. I was bathing my kid and had to dry my hands, get to a phone to manually pull up the home app and kill the streams. OMG. Now my toddler screams one thing and only one thing because that's all that is screamed in our house; "Hey Googl....STOP!"

There is no question the idiot who said, "move fast and break things" is being literally executed everywhere.

Love and hate with Tesla the same. For every update, there are 10 things they break/step backwards.

I have no solution and it's a mindset of next gen companies to give their users quality and quantity. I loved gadgets, tech and all things shiny shiny but the disappointed is almost unbearable.

PS> Now that we have literally an army of geriatrics with time and money. Someone should create the "Grandparents tested and approved" certification. If they can find what they need to do without intervention, you got gold.

lakotasapa··on Ask HN: Where do you go to meet interesting people (not engineers)?
You ever find it harder to find when you looking intentionally, but find it easily when you were least expecting? So having moved a lot, finding friends became a fruitless endeavor. So many don't set roots down when in midst of the careers. So find most of my relationships all transitional. I have a need to have a friend i can count on but uncertain of where I'm settling. I keep thinking if it's worth my time to find a friend during these transitional times in my life? When I know with good amount of certainty I won't be here long enough to establish a sound relationship and if I do, I'll do the disservice to uprooting it by moving. Thinking it's almost selfish to try.

So I came to the conclusion although not finding much in way of friends, thought to turn to talking to random strangers to see what turns up.

Friendship for men is a sad state of affairs. Especially, here in California where most are and even though I'm from the midwest, I feel like I moved to a different country.

Work "friends" haven't worked out because no one stays long enough or connections deep enough to stay connected i find. Few factors; language, culture, race, heritage.

Neighbor "friends" intent to be transitional. As soon as the house get appraised 2x, they are outta here, but also language, culture, race, heritage.

Meetups(.com) never worked. Unless you like "working the crowd" for a potential suitor. How do you walk the room looking a bit desperate and targeting people to strike up conversations. Men just don't do that. Most look awkward, eat/drink in a corner and leave as soon as they can. I'm here on HN for years, have tried contacting some directly and through comments, but not a single one had the courtesy of replying back.

Churches. And if the relationship doesn't workout? You ignore him at every service? Or you find a different church? Or be gossiped out of the community because you crave Metallica? My In-law parents went this route. And now they've ran out of churches to escape fruitless baseless gossips.

There has to be a way for men to meet other men without looking like you want an affair or belittled or berated for being you.

ugh. Men being men suck. World wide. They need to get over it.

However, like you, I too have a thought asto how one could overcome this. It centers around an idea of getting an attention for your "idea." And I put idea in quotes because it's not actually an idea but a thought. However, it isn't reddit where 90% of the time you're talking to a 15yr old. As they say, a need is the mother of invention.

lakotasapa··on Ask HN: Any successful stories of finding co-founders online?
Thanks! I'll take a look. I think this is prime area for a biz. Not just sw devs but projs in general. I'm procrastinating on my son's very elaborate busy board (I have EE background :) ) and countless other projs. One doesn't neccessrily need to expose every aspect of the proj but maybe share at a high level what they are making and where they are at could be publically tracked. Everyone has a bit of showman in them and nothing wrong with that. Outside of self esteem, it could very well not only motivate others but give others ideas.

Humm....

[EDIT] Sadly one of the biggest company in the world was made just by that kind of motivation; FB. Watching Social Network when he hacked the original face book. He was coding while friends came and motivated him to do more. I sincerely think if he didn't have that circle of friends, it never would have happened. Me thinks.

lakotasapa··on Ask HN: Any advice for first FAANG interview?
I actually know a lot of PiP used. It's not the bottom 10% but it's almost always personal from mgmt to whoever they want out wo getting sued for wrongful termination. The so called get rid of the bottom "10%" is more through natural attrition via retasked to do demoralizing work. Yeah when you work for some bad blood. They will make your life a living hell.

Also not so much long hours bc you do that elsewhere too but it's more of high pressure to get things done even when things that don't work isn't your area to deal it. That's one of their most coveted principles: bias for action.

lakotasapa··on Ask HN: What small lifestyle changes have made the biggest impacts on your life?
Once a qtr I do 5+ days of water + electrolytes only.

Made a measurable difference.

Also maintain that with no food Mondays. Last meal Sun at 7p than fest on Tue lunch. Every week.

The difference comes in many folds.with one being less obvious; self discipline.

I admit now with a child. That 5 day qtrly fast has become impossible but can't give up on something that works.

I truly believe if everyone skips eating one day a week and IMF the rest. Our health system will be so disrupted with healthy ppl. Big pharma and private hospitals would go out of business. Then maintain healthcare by the gov could easily take place in the US.

lakotasapa··on Ask HN: Any advice for first FAANG interview?
I worked at Lab126 for 7yrs and interviewed many. Someone mentioned "Leadership Principles" AMZN lives and dies by that but other than using key words, create your own successful stories around few of those principles.

Also most of it is behavior questioning so key up on that.

People aren't wrong about Amzn for the most part but there are good dept/mgrs as well as sh*tty ones. Mostly money power fame driven, nothing more. No diff than any other jerks in other companies. And I've worked in all but one of the FAANG/M.

I actually agree with all of these company's motto of driving the 1yr hires to the ground. Why? because although they get burnt out, they get paid well, keep sign on bonuses but the pay off for the company? Your dedication to prove your worth by working 10x harder 18hrs a day for a year. Can't beat that. I say that's actually a decent biz model in IMHO. Just to clarify in the bayarea, your 1st year, you would be walking away with some north of $250k base+sign on+1st yr vesting.

lakotasapa··on Ask HN: Any successful stories of finding co-founders online?
[EDIT] for grammar.

Ive tried by answering posts and direct DM. Never get answered. Not sure what they're looking for but it doesn't seem to "co-founders."

I'm finding that it harder to find a cofounder than it was to find my wife!!

I mostly want to leverage the fact I need motivation rather than an actual cofounder. Wish there was a forum/social network where ppl like me can find more emotional support and camaraderie to finish my projects. Finding that using my wife to keep me accountable..doesn't work :)

The side bonus of a social network like that would be then to "test drive" potential partners in crime rather than to jump right in blindly. Doing it "blindly" is almost like a setup date / blind dating. Or a box of chocolate...you never know what you're going to get next.

lakotasapa··on Ask HN: Have YouTube's recommendations gotten worse?
Absolutely horrendous. My kid likes Starfishes. It goes from pretty starfish living to starfish being ripped apart in a span of few videos. I wasn't paying attention when I started one video from him then in a span of 10mins he is now scarred for life. Absolutely no YouTube for kids and for me, I download what I want to watch bc I tend to watch them again but hate their recommendations. Their Algo is simply the worst...WORST.
lakotasapa··on Ask HN: Do you listen to music/watch videos while working?
You can't according to science. We are simply not capable of multitasking. There is a great podcast on Hidden Brain: Life Interrupted.

However what does seem to work is no lyric music with a rhythm that's close to your own heart rate.

I listen to a genre of music someone hacked together thats seem to making gains: epic music. Popular artists I like are Two Steps from Hell and Audio Machine.

I code but it seems science agrees if you find non intrusive music that you don't need to interpret but simply "groove" subconsciously is your best bet.

Another genre I like; Baroque, chamber music ie Bach Handel

lakotasapa··on Ask HN: How do you watch over your kids digital gadgets? (Parental Control)
Highly recommend routing your DNS pointers on your router to 1.1.1.3 / 1.0.0.3

Just found out there is a huge thread on HN:https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22748141

Better if you get him a middle of the road Chromebook.

lakotasapa··on What can I do to protect myself in case Google randomly bans my accounts?
No doubt mine too. First the foremost, get G's Take Out option ASAP. At least you'll have backups. I do that actually in two ways:

1. Take out

2. IMAP to local email client. Take Out format not always great and you don't get attachments. So doing the IMAP can litteraly be your identicial backup. I simple created a trucrypt encrypted 30GB container with portable thunderbird on it. The I fire it up once in a while to replicate/sync.

I'm also doing what others have suggested both:

1. I've captured as soon as services became available my name on all of the significant email services and I do keep them alive.

2. got my own domain but I realized having it on GCE cloud isn't the best idea. I may retain the domain but will need to the replicate my server onto diff cloud. Guess will need to think that through.

yeah I feel your paranoia.

Side note: I'm also wondering with their AI/ML. If I could get a psych profile based on my emails, searches etc... that would be an interesting read. I mean they have my searches and emails which they've scanned and profiled since their inception!

lakotasapa··on Ask HN: Do you know any company likely to beat Facebook?
I believe someone already stated the obvious: no one competitor will beat FB. Here are some of my thoughts on this:

1. They own ALL of Friendster's patents. they are all encompassing regarding social networking. No way any little guy can defend themselves.

2. someone said another obvious thing: ppl use different aspects of FB and not all.

3. after mons/yrs of teaching your grandma to use FB, no way anyone will move away and reteach.

4. FB offers no complete like Goog's Take Out scenario to easily reimport into another social network.

5. too many catfish. I suspect only 25% are real people. rest are entities, multi-accts.

6. too many simple thinking ppl are entrenched and won't change. comfort zone barrier too high to break.

7. governments worldwide now use them to control their people where in some coountries, every individual getting a cellphone must have a FB acct.

8. some countries like India use FB as their "internet." They don't know www exists.

9. FB can only be brought down by itself and they are already doing a fine job of it. There is a cycle for companies like this and although they now have a very long tail, there is an end to that tail. Next generation will have to make that change over so at a minimum, it will take a generation to make that fall.

10. FB are already losing the next gen, so opportunities abound except for the patent fights that will happen.

Bottomline is FB a road most will need to travel on for now, but I suspect like hwys, toll roads can lead a path out for some while the rifrafts will stay on the sinking boat.
