krolley··on GitLab Made $10.5M in Revenue with Every Employee Working from Home
I don't know how the GP poster is doing it, because it is practically impossible to be the primary caregiver of an infant or toddler, and be able to work at the same time. Don't fool yourself into thinking you will somehow manage, and I suggest you start discussing options with your wife for when she heads back to work.
krolley··on Denmark to ban petrol and diesel car sales by 2030
Aren't they building the Coastal Highway at a cost of $47B that will include a few tunnels and a few more bridges?
krolley··on Self-Driving Cars Can Handle Neither Rain nor Sleet nor Snow
As it is now, sometimes ice needs to be scraped off the windshield before you can drive. It may be the same with the cars external sensors.
krolley··on Blender is testing PeerTube after YouTube blocks their videos worldwide
This is a totally fair point. But wouldn't it make more sense to either (a) continue to pay the hosting costs to stay known as the 'one true place' to find online videos, or (b) allow the Blender Foundation to pay to host their vidoes on YouTube if they want to stay ad-free?
krolley··on Ask HN: Is there a new habit you cultivated recently that is really paying off?
I'm the same. I feel the need to get "high" pretty much once or twice a week. I much prefer to smoke weed, and only drink if I can't smoke. Luckily for me I like to use a vaporizer so I never have more than can fit into one bowl -- which is not a great amount -- and I don't get a massive _high_ from it. Also, the weed stops me from getting fat as I don't really get the munchies, and avoid all the calories from alcohol.

Would be nice to stop this behaviour but I can't really seem to, and it doesn't seem to have huge negative effects on my life, but it definitely does have some.

krolley··on How to be a Manager – A step-by-step guide to leading a team
Because you don't set the values of the company, you just align your team to the goals of your larger organization / company.
krolley··on Why Children Aren't Behaving and What We Can Do About It
As a parent of a two year-old, one thing I will not allow (for as long as possible) is unrestricted YouTube. I've seen my nieces watch unboxing videos and videos of kids acting like babies. It seems addictive and utterly devoid of any value.
krolley··on Redoing all my home networking
I like to have the "perfect" setup. Of course, that definition is relative and ever-changing. In reality, I end up spending an insane amount of time adjusting, switching to different software, or trying to get the last 1% of a feature working. It's not always enjoyable :-)
krolley··on My offer numbers from big companies
Couldn't you have negotiated that in your offer e.g. I'll take the 140k bonus but my phone is off from 6pm to 8am, only covering night shift on certain days etc. If they say no that's OK, but if they say yes, great.
krolley··on My offer numbers from big companies
Also living in Switzerland. I have to comment that ~200K is not "normal" salary here either. To be fair, most people also don't have a nanny for their kids (or more than 1 as you do), and do not pay for private school. Average salary for a Software Dev with >10 years experience in Zurich is somewhere around 130k - 150k.
krolley··on Samsung Develops Battery Material with 5x Faster Charging Speed
Experts are right to be skeptical that it's possible with current gen tech. As usual, Musk is probably extrapolating charge speeds to when the truck will be finally delivered, which is in what, 2020?
krolley··on I cured my tech fatigue by ditching feeds
The part about scrolling through your feed for 30 seconds, realising it's all crap and exiting is true. I unhooked simply because the content isn't interesting.
krolley··on Microsoft Has Stopped Manufacturing The Kinect
I believe they did, but they miniaturized it and are using it for their face recognition technology in the iPhone X to unlock the phone.
krolley··on Rejecting a candidate for over-qualification results in age bias
What about work experience in popular western countries in Europe? I've been living (and working) abroad for the last 10 years but might come home sooner or later.
krolley··on ARCore: Augmented reality at Android scale
Out of curiosity, what apps did you build for your wife or kids? To solve what problems?
krolley··on Apple Abandons Development of Wireless Routers
Also, resale values are typically very good. Even years after the initial purchase you can recoup much, much more than a Dell or Lenovo.
krolley··on You’re How Old? We’ll Be in Touch
I assumed it was just a generational term like 'Generation X' or 'Millennial'.
krolley··on Apple Pay Now Accounts for Three-Fourths of U.S. Contactless Payments
At the moment Apple Pay have only two supporting banks: Swiss bankers and Corner. Now that Twint and Paymit are merging, they have most major banks and shops (Credit Suisse, Postfinance, Raiffeisen, UBS, ZKB, Migros, Coop, Swisscom) behind them, so I think Apple will struggle. Also, unlike other markets I think Switzerland has a very low usage of contactless payments. I rarely see anyone use them but maybe that will change with the rise of Twint (e.g putting little Twint signs next to every terminal).
krolley··on The Surprising Ease of Plain Text Accounting
This sounds like the same thing, phrased differently. According to the grandparent, categorising something new into the 'responsible' and 'irresponsible' buckets is hard and not something that generally gets better with experience.
krolley··on Amazon software engineer interview
Not to mention the grandparent suggested showing them his GitHub profile and committing fixes to their open source repos. Uhh, yeah, I'd hire you too! Are we forgetting that most developers don't have GitHub profiles or aren't able to patch open source projects.
krolley··on Have Software Developers Given Up?
If I am looking for a surgeon for an operation, it's enough for me to know that he was trained at a good school and has enough experience -- for that a bio online is already decent. I trust his education, after all the field of medicine is one of the oldest in existence.

There is no such trust in the education of software developers, perhaps because software development is such a new field. I've worked with great ones without a formal education and terrible ones that graduated from good schools. The way to 'prove' yourself to someone when they can't work with you (e.g. first stages of a hiring process) is to demonstrate your work by using technical articles, GitHub commits etc. Also, that stuff is not specific to web devs, I'm sure you can find every kind of project under the sun on GitHub.

krolley··on First Look at the Rift, Shipping Q1 2016
Have any of those companies announced a release date for any of their products though? As far as I am aware, the rift is still (or will be) the first consumer accessible VR product.
krolley··on They're Made out of Meat
It's a reference to the 'Chinese Room' thought experiment.

krolley··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
Watches that run on body heat? If you're referring to mechanical watches, I think they use motion to wind a torsion spring to store energy.
krolley··on The Australian Computer Society should be disbanded
I'm also from Perth, but I don't see urban decay "all over the city". The worst (and only) place I probably had the feeling of some urban decay was Ellenbrook.
krolley··on Prepaid Cellphones Are Cheaper. Why Aren't They Popular?
Personally, prepaid data is what I would really love. I am often back in Australia for one month every one to two years, and an iPhone without data is such a useless device. A beautiful, shiny black mini computer in which all the useful functions aren't available. So frustrating.
krolley··on Argentina bans dollar purchases for savings
I disagree. I wandered into the comments just to find out what would happen, or what this means to, the market and Argentinians in general.
krolley··on Windows 8 Pro Upgrade to cost $39.99
The lines will blur anyway. A Microsoft Surface combined with a TypeCover (assuming it works well), could be used as both a tablet and a laptop at different times. Does it then contribute to PC sales or tablet sales?
krolley··on The average Greek is working a full 40% longer than the average German
The article paints a different picture anyway. Greeks apparently have the most worked hours, while Germans have the second-fewest worked hours. Greece is 7th _least_ productive and Germany is 7th _most_ productive.

When Germans come in to work, there is surprisingly little socialising. When they work, they work hard. Also, the difference in hours worked is probably solely due to the difference in the number of part timers between the countries. 2000 hours per year (avg. Greek hours per year) is only 38 hours per week.

krolley··on Poll: How long have you been programming?
I find it pretty funny that _after_ you graduated (and according to the hardware you had at the time) you decided to completely change careers :)
