kristaps··on Advent of Code 2023 is nigh
Yeah, that touch of ambiguity looked very deliberate, to give LLMs a hard time.
kristaps··on Advent of Code 2023 is nigh
Last year there were people solving the puzzles with LLMs, but I don't think I saw anyone get past day 5 or so.

I'm interested in how well it goes this year.

Please reply if you are trying yourself or can link to public attempts by others

kristaps··on Advent of Code 2023 is nigh
This year they politely ask people not to use LLM solutions until the days leaderboard is full.
kristaps··on An Internet of PHP
77% of top 10M sites - sounds like reeling in the long tail for effect, has to be way lower for the top 1K sites.
kristaps··on Podman v4.6 Introduces Podmansh: A Revolutionary Login Shell
Probably an 80s sysadmins dream, but are multi-user Unix machines really that much of a thing currently?
kristaps··on Python in 2023 still sucks at importing modules from another folder
For all the things wrong with node, I envy the relative filename importing they have when writing Python.
kristaps··on MusicGen: Simple and controllable music generation
Eh, could fit into a busier "Acrid avid jam shred", I think

kristaps··on Ask HN: What sub $200 product improved your 2022
If your oven has an electronic timer, it should have a function to finish at time x, so you could even wake up to done ones. Great, for coming home from work to perfectly slow-cooked ribs, for example.
kristaps··on Ask HN: Ads triggered by WhatsApp “end to end encrypted” messages?
How are you coordinating the topics? Maybe by voice within earshot of a phone with Meta apps?
kristaps··on The Beloved Eagle 66 Squirt Oiler (2019) [video]
Yep, certified internet treasure
kristaps··on More content by people, for people in Search
Could it be that the results have gotten so bad that less people even bother with search, hurting ad revenue?
kristaps··on Physical buttons outperform touchscreens in new cars, test finds
To nobodies surprise.
kristaps··on Ask HN: Have You Left Kubernetes?
While I like Kubernetess generally, I agree that the OOM handling is not ideal, feels quite a bit like "exercise left to the reader".
kristaps··on China mortgage boycott data erased by censors as crisis spreads
Two things that come to mind: whip developers and if that doesn't do it, bail them out.
kristaps··on Dangit, Git?
Thanks, will be much more comfortable passing this one to my juniors!
kristaps··on Bitcoin Falls Below $20k for the First Time Since 2020
Dumb money drying up?
kristaps··on Dear Spotify, can we just get a table of songs?
Spotify UI in general feels like way too many product managers aggressively justifying their existence instead of making what the end user actually needs.
kristaps··on Abletone Learning Synth
Yeah, my first thought was they have a new ML-based product from seeing that name.
kristaps··on PSA: React 18 calls code twice in strict dev mode to detect side effects
I agree, at first reading this sounds just plain horrible. I haven't tried doing any research, can anyone point out why it's not?

> Lidl has a long history of underpaying and abusing their personnel

So does Amazon?

kristaps··on Microsoft YARP
Your application does indeed sound like it's beyond OTS solutions, thanks for sharing!
kristaps··on Microsoft YARP
Can you share more specifics on what you needed to customize that went beyond nginx's capabilities?
kristaps··on Major breakthrough on nuclear fusion energy
From the article I gathered that this run was mostly about validating some design choices for ITER, not about pushing output limits.
kristaps··on Apple removes Python 2.7 in macOS 12.3 beta
Well, anyone who still has critical stuff on Python 2, really has nobody but themselves to blame.

Bad form? Maybe. Good riddance? Yes.

kristaps··on A Better Git Flow
It's true that messy commits happen, that's why squash is there.

Nothing forces you to keep the messy commit messages either - keep the short commit message and make sure it's good, then delete the combined individual commit messages from the long message field, done.
