kpozin··on Ask HN: Remotely helping elderly parents?
For my grandfather, I started with a combination of Chrome Remote Desktop's assistance feature and later Windows Quick Assist. Windows Quick Assist was easier because the helper needs to sign in and type in the one-time code, not the helped.

However, in the end, even walking him through launching Quick Assist was too error-prone, so I ended up installing Chrome Remote Desktop with a Google account that I controlled and enabled remote access, allowing me to connect without requiring him to do anything.

kpozin··on Ask HN: What's the best book you read in 2021?
For a broader look at the same subject (on the continental scale), I recommend 1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus by Charles C. Mann.
kpozin··on Ask HN: What are the best-designed things you've ever used?
MDR-7506 — The fact that the cable isn't detachable makes no sense to me.
kpozin··on Ask HN: Can you please add transcription to vocal messages in messaging apps?
I think you can ask Siri or Google Assistant to read your new messages (by accessing the phone notification contents), but I'm not aware of in-app features.
kpozin··on Cities try to phase out gas stoves but cooks are pushing back
I've recently been trying to find an apartment in NYC. Every apartment has a gas stove. And all of the post-war apartments (and most of the older ones, too) don't have ventilation in the kitchen — at most they'll have a tiny passive vent opening in a corner somewhere, and even that's not guaranteed. The fans over the cooktops, if present, don't connect to outside air but just recirculate the stove exhaust throughout the kitchen. I don't understand how such designs aren't banned by building codes.
kpozin··on The humble water heater could be the savior of our energy infrastructure woes
Out of curiosity, what is the effect of this thick insulation on indoor CO₂ levels? Do these houses usually have ventilation systems that can compensate?
kpozin··on Gap to close all 81 stores in UK and Ireland
My usual reasoning is, if there's conspicuous branding on the clothing, then the money should be flowing in the opposite direction. Why should I pay a company to advertise for them?

kpozin··on A dwarf planet coming within 11 AU of the sun over the next 10 years
Note that dwarf planet Ceres, which orbits the sun at ~3 AU, is larger (⌀ = 939 km) than this one (⌀ = 100–200 km). There are ~25 other known asteroids with diameters over 200 km in the asteroid belt (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_exceptional_asteroids#...).

kpozin··on Life as a public school teacher in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2021
Seems like the simplest solution is to specify that the lowest _n_ assignment or quiz grades will be dropped from the overall grade calculation. I recall taking a few classes in high school and college with such a policy.
kpozin··on iOS 15 Humane
And then there's the Audible app for Android, which puts both ad notifications and their playback control widget into a single "Member notifications" channel, so that you can't disable the ads without losing access to playback controls.
kpozin··on Surface Laptop 4
On my Surface Pro 7:

* The Win10 "Night light" feature became unavailable about half a year after I bought the device. Had to go back to using f.lux. (Meanwhile, on my 2012 ThinkPad with an old NVS5400M graphics card, Night light works just fine.)

* The front camera would regularly get stuck in a bad state, with the light and IR illuminator turned on but camera unavailable, until a reboot. A recent driver update seems to have mitigated the bug; now the camera just reports an error until I reboot, but at least the lights don't stay on.

* There's no S3 Standby state. Either the computer stays on in "Connected S0", with sounds playing, radios on, snagging my Bluetooth headphones' connection, or I can put it into Hibernate, burning through 16 GB of the SSD's TBW every time.

kpozin··on Deepfakes of Tom Cruise show the technology's threat to society is real
In all three videos, the chin looks like it doesn't quite fit on the original actor's face. There are also a number of moments where the lip movements don't match the speech audio.

All fixable in time, no doubt.

kpozin··on Ask HN: Favorite Podcast Episode of 2020?

kpozin··on Ask HN: What Lived Up to the Hype?
For much the same reasons as ojnabieoot gives above. The Bombadil chapters feel like a haphazard insertion from a different book and perhaps even from a different fictional universe, and seem to serve no narrative purpose in the context of the trilogy. The film version feels much more coherent for having omitted them.
kpozin··on Ask HN: What Lived Up to the Hype?
I recently re-read The Fellowship and appreciated how prudent the filmmakers were to remove the Bombadil side plot entirely.

kpozin··on DaVinci Resolve – A high-end video editing/post-production software program
Has anyone found a way to get Resolve to render previews into a RAM or disk buffer before playing them, instead of trying (and failing) to render everything in real time? This is my main complaint coming from Premiere -- along with the inexplicable lack of tooltips on obscurely labeled buttons.
kpozin··on Samsung TV owners complain about increasingly obtrusive ads
You can also disable Kindle ads by never turning on the device's WiFi, just transferring books over USB.
kpozin··on The Rise and Fall of Pret a Manger
When I was in London on vacation nine years ago, Pret shops were a godsend. I think at least half of my lunches and dinners were Pret sandwiches, as I was generally running around and didn't have time or energy for much else. After they became popular in NYC a few years later, I tried them a couple of times but didn't find nearly as good a selection of healthy options as in London.
kpozin··on Mark Twain’s Mind Waves
Just wanted to mention, tangentially, that I'm currently halfway through Twain's Roughing It, which comes up in the article. If you enjoy wry humor, I heartily recommend the book (as well as Grover Gardner's narration, included with Audible subscription).
kpozin··on Using SQL to find my best photo of a pelican according to Apple Photos
A feature I've long wanted to see in a photo management tool is ranking based on pairwise comparisons. Say you went on a trip and had 200 "keeper" photos, but that's still too many to publish in an online album, and many of them are near-duplicates anyway.

If the photo manager let you compare any set of photos two at a time, you could (with n-choose-2 keypresses) find something close to a total order of the set. Then you'd easily be able to choose the best photos of the whole set, as well as the best ones of each subject/set of duplicates. No machine learning would be required.

Has anyone encountered a tool like this?

Edit: You wouldn't get a stable total order because the pairwise comparisons might not hold transitively, but something like Elo ranking could work here.

kpozin··on It's 2020 and I'm using image maps
> Make a web framework that renders the UI entirely as mapped images.

This is in fact what Microsoft Publisher (late 90s WYSIWYG web development tool) used to do if you dared to make any page elements overlap.

kpozin··on CDC says U.S. gatherings of over 50 people should be put off
This is a problem that the city already faces during every school vacation and for 2.5 months every summer. Surely there must already be some functioning solutions. (For example, many NYC schools serve breakfast and lunch to children under 18 throughout the summer. I'm not sure how the lack of childcare is handled during the summers.)
