kowdermeister··on After Your First Big Startup Success, What’s Next? (2014)
Any article recommendation for the opposite situation?
kowdermeister··on Verizon reportedly seeking to sell Tumblr
It would be quite a plot twist if PornHub acquired them :)
kowdermeister··on Don't Waste Time on User Onboarding
A lucky HN or PH campaign might help for a while, but the traffic spike will calm down soon.

I'll pay for them on the long run. For me, the CPC cost will make it worth.

There are also other ideas, like launching an affiliate program, app marketplaces.

Look at where the traffic is in your niche.

kowdermeister··on I forgot how to manage a server
Agree, I call them and think of them as Lambda servers.
kowdermeister··on Diesel is not better for the environment than electric
You are missing the point. This is a long run game, since we can easily transition from fossil fuels to alternate energy source without having to replace fundamentally how EV engines work. All they need is electrons, not exploding fossil fuel. These electrons can come from any source. If it's fossil today it doesn't matter. 20, 50. 100 years from now the source of energy can shift significantly while the transportation industry just wouldn't care anymore.
kowdermeister··on Impact of a Night of Sleep Deprivation on Novice Developers’ Performance (2018)
Here's one: "...yeah, they all wear golden handcuffs :)"
kowdermeister··on Stepping Away from Sass
It does not. With Parcel for example it works out of the box and it even installs the dependencies automatically for you.

I still love SASS since it solves many existing problems at once like you mentioned.

kowdermeister··on James Webb Telescope will run a proprietary JS interpreter by a bankrupt company
Are the fundamentals really janky?

Prototypical inheritance is actually not a bad choice.

The event loop also stood the stand the test of time, it's a great choice for IO heavy environments like the web is.

The weak type system made it possible to bang out code really quickly without much thought thus making it very beginner friendly. Most of its issues can be traced back to this.

The wat talk is really funny, but it proves only that if you do moronic things, you will get nonsense results. Truly shocking.

> cobbled together in a few weeks by some poor fellow

It was. And then all work has stopped on it, right?

kowdermeister··on Apple Face-Recognition Blamed by New York Teen for False Arrest
Is that bad in the US? Nobody cares if it was because of a mistake?
kowdermeister··on Show HN: Procedural Character Animation with Machine Learning in Three.js
I would mention somewhere the WASD controls :) Figured it out by accident.
kowdermeister··on Its butterfly keyboard design has failed, but Apple has yet to admit its mistake
My only complaint with ThinkPads is that they are ugly as hell and I'm not an Apple fanboy. A device should look beautiful, clean and simple that you are looking at all day.
kowdermeister··on Ikonate – fully customisable and accessible vector icons
This is pretty neat, cool name, it goes to my loved bookmarks :)

One thing though I don't get is the 0 border width setting. Is that useful somehow?

kowdermeister··on I got tired of PHP and Perl, so I tried bash
Thanks, I almost killed my laptop spitting coffee on it :)
kowdermeister··on Building a front end with no JavaScript
I never noticed nor this nor the edit issue after using Asana for years now. It's probably not a CPU issue, I have i5, but it's baffling how different experiences can be for webapps.
kowdermeister··on Paint Is Colored Glue
Ignorant at best ;) It's nice to let to learn about other viewpoints though.
kowdermeister··on Paint Is Colored Glue
Really? It was not the intention. I just found it odd to be on the top of HN, so I assumed it to have a deeper meaning which I still find funny.
kowdermeister··on Paint Is Colored Glue
Thanks for the link instead of a downvote, never seen this post.
kowdermeister··on Paint Is Colored Glue
Is there a hidden analogy to programming that I missed? :)
kowdermeister··on Implementing API Billing with Stripe
A checklist of cases that I might not thought of. I would group example code around different use case and not around API endpoints.

For example Braintree is good in that sense: https://developers.braintreepayments.com/guides/recurring-bi...

I know it's not a payment gateway's responsibility, but some further handholding on tax and VAT, invoicing issues would be handy.

kowdermeister··on Implementing API Billing with Stripe
As a solo developer on a project which needs flexible payment options (also t-shirts) that's why I need to pick a payment solution that supports paypal besides other methods.

Paddle looks like the service I need on the long run:

kowdermeister··on Implementing API Billing with Stripe
I've seen way too many "just copy these 5 lines" and you are good to go. With payments this is never that simple.
kowdermeister··on I tried creating a web browser, and Google blocked me
Not ones with DRM which is the point of the entire discussion.
kowdermeister··on I tried creating a web browser, and Google blocked me
This sucks, I know how bad if feels when you rely on a major vendor that can make or break your product. I was somewhat relieved that it happened when I already abandoned the project for a better one but had I invested more time into it I would have been furious.

The only thing I wonder here is that DRM was a thing when he started working on this project, didn't he see this coming? By this I mean that project research should start with the hardest part, at least that's what I usually do.

kowdermeister··on Reducing notification permission prompt spam in Firefox
Exactly for actions like this which they've done in the post. Would you prefer a more obvious switch on setup?
kowdermeister··on Cisco Fixes RV320/RV325 Vulnerability by Banning “curl” in User-Agent
That's a perfect example you should post to JAC before. It would not pass, please never post this "joke" again.

Welcome on board :)

kowdermeister··on A woman who doesn't feel pain
I was at first too, but it's an odd story to brag about and it actually was a complaint :)
kowdermeister··on A woman who doesn't feel pain
I knew a girl who couldn't get drunk (bottle of vodka and no effect), she had to fake it sometimes not to look alcoholic. She said she wasn't the only one in the family.
