kooshball··on The Age Verification Trap: Verifying age undermines everyone's data protection
> Better the nanny state than Nanny Zuck.

This is a huge self own. I can't believe I'm reading this on a website called "hacker news".

kooshball··on Anthropic raises $30B in Series G funding at $380B post-money valuation
if an employee exercise options (but stays at the company) does that still count as one of 1000?
kooshball··on Anthropic raises $30B in Series G funding at $380B post-money valuation
there used to be rules that companies must be public if they have other 1000 investors. is this no longer the case?
kooshball··on OpenAI needs to raise at least $207B by 2030
no. this role is for running ads campaigns at scale (on google, meta, etc) to grow openai users. its at a large enough scale it's called "platform" but it would be internal use only.

> Your role will include projects such as developing campaign management tools, integrating with major ad platforms, building real-time attribution and reporting pipelines, and enabling experimentation frameworks to optimize our objectives.

kooshball··on iNaturalist strikes out on its own
that is actually surprising. surely they use location at some point in the ID process. its possible they have a secondary location based model to do sorting/ranking after the initial detection?

Merlin's bird detection system is almost non-functional without location.

kooshball··on iNaturalist strikes out on its own
if you're willing it's totally fine to share your work with the model itself removed
kooshball··on iNaturalist strikes out on its own
I would pay for this
kooshball··on Baltimore sues Hyundai, Kia over spike in car thefts
no one asserted 1/5 is not significant. you misread this.

i was just stating the fact that the initial number posted was wrong/incomplete.

kooshball··on Baltimore sues Hyundai, Kia over spike in car thefts
> Drug Offenses are nearly half the prison population

this is not true. your data is federal only. most prisoners are at state prisons. drug offense is about 1/5 of total.

kooshball··on Ask HN: Is it appropriate to ask a startup to let me see their cap table?
you're right that in any funding round (private or public ipo) there is dilution. your ownership in % will go down.

however no company will be able to predict future dilution so this is not really something they can tell you with confidence.

the only thing you can do is gauge current state of the company (funding, readiness for ipo) and try to estimate future dilution but even this is non trivial for early stage companies.

kooshball··on Ask HN: Elevator Pitch for a Polymath?
in case you really didn't know, "they" can also be singular

https://www.dictionary.com/browse/they

kooshball··on Ask HN: Are companies becoming increasingly pushy? If so why?
your understanding of ads industry is decades out of date. this is not how digital ad is bought or sold today for small content creators
kooshball··on iPhone 14 Pro camera review: A small step, a huge leap
can't you turn that off?
kooshball··on Identify Birds by Their Chirp
it's very similar. they built this directly into the Merlin app. other diff is birdnet coudlnt detect birds in realtime where as Merlin can.
kooshball··on Houston moved 25k people from the streets into homes of their own
i hope it's not surprising to you that some homeowners do pay to upgrade their place so it's actually maintained over time. if you don't do that obviously things will get worse, not better in 60+ years! I'm not sure why you think this is a SF phenomenon.

so no, not all SFH in SF are shit.

kooshball··on Bolt announces layoffs
the answer is no probably not. VC for tech startup exist because of economy of scale of tech and is ruled by power law. one winner that returns 100x is much more important than a handful that return 2x.

to be clear most VC funds are not actually able to do that.

kooshball··on The tech sector teardown is more catharsis than crisis
here are the basics

https://www.investopedia.com/investing/how-interest-rates-af...

I think the dynamic for private (VC) money and public markets are different

VC money will dry up as endowments look to shift more money into safer asset class when interest rate is high

public markets company valuation models change with interest rates changing. when rate is close to 0 investors are willing to buy asset with a very long term view for expected future profit (say 10 years). when rates go up that time frame shortens since opportunity cost of buying that stock today is now much higher.

kooshball··on Ask HN: When did tech stop being cool?
what a ridiculous statement. it also shows why the whole premise for this post is so misguided.
kooshball··on Ask HN: What to do about Gmail blocking my email?
think about what the PM of antispam at Gmail is optimizing for. their job is to provide defense against adversarial spammers.

anything trivial for you to do to get into someone's inbox can also be trivial for spammers. they'll have a bot that do it 1000 times a day. Gmail can't stop spam altogether so the general strategy is to try to make it as painful and expensive as possible to deter the marginal spammers.

any sort of spam at scale is easier to detect. that's why most marginal spam happens with new IP. similar issue in the past with hacked Gmail accounts. this is where google is cracking down harder and why you're running into these issues.

kooshball··on Ask HN: What to do about Gmail blocking my email?
this is definitely not true at all. of course the scale and rate of emails coming from a specific ip/domain is used for spam detection.
kooshball··on Amazon workers on Staten Island vote to unionize
I would argue private company unions are fundamentally different from public unions like police and teachers whose roles are guaranteed by law.

kooshball··on The magic of the Japanese convenience store sandwich
sorry i wasn't implying this is what the 7-11 looks like. just sharing an example i can find of industrial level cooking automation
kooshball··on Ask HN: Is your company considering inflation in this year's comp review cycle?
it's really not. in fact there are specific terms to differentiate them

cost of living is your total live cost including inflation. cost of labor is cost to hire replacement in the overall labor market.

most companies pay in each market based on cost of labor

kooshball··on The magic of the Japanese convenience store sandwich
it looks something like this

I've seen videos where it's much larger scale restaurant. the chefs are basically just responsible for filling those bowls and they man multiple stations. there are also versions with a wok.

kooshball··on iPhone 13 Pro: The Edge of Intelligent Photography
btw that photo of the kid posted by jbenson is the clear example of software bug where it used the wrong lense.
kooshball··on iPhone 13 Pro: The Edge of Intelligent Photography
when did you try this?

the 13 pro max camera is insanely good so you're likely seeing a bug. I would very strongly disagree it's worse than the iPhone x or 11. I had both.

I think it's possible you're seeing a bug where the camera is using the wrong lens for the distance. I did notice earlier neat launch when I switch between 1x and 3x sometimes the software will use 1x and digital zoom to 3x instead which obviously produced horrible images. I think this got patched as I haven't seen it recently.

kooshball··on Wormhole confirms all $320M in funds have been restored
serious question at what point do you concede your biased understanding of the world is wrong? if there is no such scenario are you really thinking critically?
